Cemetery Database as of July 2007The Rhode Island Historical Cemeteries Transcription Project was begun by genealogists in 1990 with the goal of entering all known transcriptions of cemeteries in RI into a database (phase 1), then sending volunteers into the field with a printout to see which stones were still there and whether they were correctly transcribed (phase 2). The Association for Gravestone Studies format is used. The cemeteries and the listings are primarily 1647-1900.

The whole database can be accessed by computer at the Rhode Island Historical Society in Providence. The Master Index is available at NEHGS. For a complete list of locations where copies of the database are available, as well as tipes for using the database, see the Rhode Island Cemeteries Database Home Page. Books have been published for many of the towns, and more are planned. The Project is still all done by volunteers.
When project volunteers record a cemetery, location of individual graves is scrupulously noted. Graves were moved usually due to the breakup of farms for housing or roads or because a family desired to move their dead to a more upscale cemetery. The new locations of most of the moved cemeteries/graves are known. Most of the completely "missing" cemeteries consisted of a handful of stones.
