I have many old stories written by my Great-Great grandmother, Esther PALMER CLARK. One story in particular relates a trip Esther took with her grandmother, Esther BARBER of Exeter RI to visit her grandmother's cousin, a Mrs. ALLEN. I have been unable to determine who this ALLEN family was, relative or friends, but I think if I could find a distance relative of the ALLEN family they would find it very interesting. The trip took place in about 1838 or 1839. Esther and her grandmother arrived in Newport and walked to the Allens house, as she states, the house was only "a short distance from the landing". Esther and her grandmother had taken a boat from Exeter, RI. Mrs. ALLEN had two daughters, Abbie and Sarah. Abbie was about the same age as Esther, about 8 or 9 years old. Sarah was an older girl, engaged to be married. Mrs. ALLEN also had 4 sons, but names of the sons were never mentioned. Mr. ALLEN owned a store, most likely a grocery store. Sarah Allen's fiance was a merchant in Newport. She refered to his place of business as having only Dry Goods. Sarah and her fiance were building a new home in Newport and both families appeared to have very wealthy. Mrs. Allen's first name was Elizabeth. I would love to find a descendant of this ALLEN family as the story is very interesting with descriptions of the Allen's home decor, as well as the new home being built for Sarah ALLEN and her new husband by her parents. If anyone thinks they may recognize this family, with the little bit of information I have. I would love to share the story. Please e-mail me.

Walworth County, Wisconsin History lists Caleb SOUTHWICK who was born 6/17/1773 as being either a brother or cousin of Solomon SOUTHWICK who ran for governor of New York. Caleb is said to have married Ann CARPENTER. (Solomonís motherís name was Ann CARPENTER GARDINER, so she could have been a cousin.) Caleb appears in the 1800, 1810 and 1820 census in Vermont and in the 1840 census in Ohio and died 1/19/1856 in Wisconsin. Solomon and his brothers (Henry Collins and Wilmarth) are all listed as being born in Newport between 1772 and 1775 so it ia more likely that Caleb was a cousin. Any information on the parents of Caleb SOUTHWICK would be greatly appreciated.

Joseph CLARKE, and Martha HOLLAND (HOWLAND?) were married on Jan 1, 1809 atthe First Baptist Church in Newport, RI. This was probably his secondmarriage. He had one son, that we know of Joseph CLARKE Jr, born 26 May1811 in Newport. We have no record of his birth, he died 1 April 1875. Joseph had three wives, Nancy CHURCH, Samantha WELLS, and Mercy Mary TABER. We are very interested in any information on either of these Joseph Clarkes. Perhaps Joseph was the son of Sherman CLARKE, but we have no hard data. All info will be appreciated. We are looking for connections to possibly Katherine TRUELL, Alice FISH, Benjamin CLARKE

John BROWNELL was born August 14, 1800, in Rhode Island, presumably Newport Co. since the BROWNELL surname appears almost exclusively in the county. During his infancy, his parents moved to Seneca Co., NY, wherehe remained until 1819 when he moved with the William SEELY family to Illinois. I am anxious to learn his parents names, his ancestry, etc. and will exchange family information with any who are interested.
