For each state, where are the Family History Centers located?
What books are there in the Library of Congress? How does one
obtain vital records? Pointers to other interesting files and
sites are also often included.

USA, General
genealog.uscensus:
For each federal census between 1790 and 1900, this article
by LaVona L. Ness tells what information was collected. Comments
are made about the limitations of the census.
genealog.qportlst:
Supposedly an "OLD PORTS LISTING" (the wine? for ships?), this file
seems instead to contain a list of books from the Library of Congress
on-line catalog (see
Library of Congress files for help on how
to use the information referenced) that include the string "port"
(as in "report" and "Davenport, Iowa" and "Portage Township" etc)
and relate somehow to genealogy.
List of United States Counties: In four parts, a list of
all the counties in the United States, plus the names of their county
seats and the zip code of the county seat. States are in alphabetical
order by their two letter postal abbreviation. (That is, Alaska, AK,
comes before Alabama, AL, etc.)
genealog.uscounts:
A list of all the counties in the United States, in a single file. This
differs from the series above in that only the names of the counties
are given (not their seats and zip codes). It's set up as a shell script
for Unix, so you can run it and have a file built for each state. But
it's also an ASCII file and usuable just by ignoring that funny
Unix stuff. ;-)
genealog.vital-nw:
Genealogical and historical societies of the United States with a
nation-wide scope. (See the individual states below for societies
with a more local focus.) Information about vital records sources (general)
plus addresses of major records repositories such as the National
Archives and the Library of Congress.

genealog.rev-war:
How to request Revolutionary War Records.
genealog.mil-rec:
How to get military records from the National Archives.
genealog.natmilc:
How to request military records from the National Personnel Records Center.
