Section 1. Printed Sources Outside North America

Dr. Anton Valdine of Moscow, RF collected this first list of sources. He also granted permission to publish it on the Internet. I have nothing more to offer, so please contact anvald@online.ru him directly if you have questions.

Here is the short description of my report on genealogical connections between Russia and foreign countries, presented at a sientific conference held in the fall of 1999 in Moscow./ Anton S. Valdine anvald@online.ru

Biographical sources of Kharbin and Shanghai (1900-1950).

A number of publications by E. Aurilene, N. Bendik and Y.TYsipkin, describing the documents.

Definitions/Acronyms:
BREM - " a bureau for the matters of the Russian emigrants in Manchuriya " - with the personal     files of the inhabitants in 1930.
GAHO - State Archive of Khabarovsk Territory.
MPS - Scientific Library of Ministry of Railroads.
RGB - Guidebook of Kharbin.
RGIA - Russian State Historical Archives.

A number of publications by E.Aurilene, N.Bendik, Y.Tysipkin, describe the documents from the State Archive of Khabarovsk Territory (GAHO).

Deposits in other archives:
State Historical Archives of Far East (Vladivostok) -
Parish registers of orthodox churches of Kharbin and KVZD for 1903-1920 Materials of some Kharbin establishments and societies.

NOTE: Location of parish registers for 1920-50, as well as sheets of Kharbin enrolling of
1913, is unknown. These were known to exist during the 1950s.

All people who moved to [from????] the USSR in 1950 , including those who were baptised much earlier in the orthodox church, were to pass soviet consular registration before leaving for the USSR. These documents as well as personal roots of members of the Society of Soviet Citizens (Kharbin) are deposited in the archives of Moscow Oblast Department of Vital Records(ZAGS).

It is possible, that there there are also archives of Association of Soviet Citizens for Shanghai.

This (1950) wave of refugees to?? the USSR from KVZD, as against those who left in 1930, did not undergo mass reprisals. Now this groups publishes newspapers: " Na sopkakh Manchzurii "(On Manchzurija's hills) (Novosibirsk) and "Russkiye v Kitaye"(Russians in China) (Ekaterinburg).

The personal files of those who worked on China-east railway road and those ???/ Who were captured (?) "Soviet" time, remain deposited in the fund (?) of KVZD in RGIA (Russian State Historical Archives). There, in the library of RGIA, the printed orders on the KVZD remain deposited also. Fund (?) of the KVZD in State Archives of the Russian Federation (N 6081) contains only orders on a road for early 1920.

Numerous " Guides books" on a personal composition of KVZD for 1915 (Russian State Library (Moscow)(RGB), (GAHO), 1916 Far East Scientific Library (Khabarovsk), and 1917 (in Scientific Library of Ministry of Railroads(MPS),Moscow.

The general directories printed in 1904- Guidebook of Kharbin(RGB), then (in library of the Chita district museum - for other early years (?)) Only in 1923 (" All Kharbin " (RGB),and in 1925, 1926 and 1927 (Khabarovsk, Vladivostok).

The lists of the homeowners for 1930 - in the fond (?) N 6034 in State Archives of RF(GA RF). For the period 1904-1905 here there are documents in the fond(?) N 1182 (GA RF) (police supervision of Manchzuria army), remain deposited (in alphabetical order). These are admissions for commercial and industrial "institutions."

The printed protocols of Kharbin City Duma can be useful, if the person worked in a city service.

Some lists of the holders of the enterprises there are contained in the fond (?) of the Russian consulate in Kharbin in the Archives of External policy of Russia.

There are documents issued by consulate instead of original passports in 1917-1920s, notarized documents about the bargains between citizens of Russia and other states. Parish registers of non-orthodox christianity(including Shanghai) have been are filmed by mormons.

There are notices, that in People Republic of China, in Shenian, Guanchzou, and in archive of the Ministry of Railroads of China there should be materials for KVZD for 1910-1924. A number (line) of the books with the lists of educational institutions (on memoirs) is issued by "kharbinians" from Australia.

The documents on Shanghai are of other composition. Where there are orthodox parish registers for 1920-1950, we do not know. The important source - materials of registration Russian in Shanghai (and in Tsingtao) for 1939-1945. (State Archive of USA (group 263.2.3). The registration cards contain a photo, dates (and place) birth, occupation (in general), address, sometimes - data about marriage, if the person died - date of death; dates of children's births and names of the parents.

At the end of 1920 - beginning 1930 several enrollings of the French sector of Shanghai (where Russians settled) were conducted by the French authorities. These materials are probably in the archive of Department of Foreign Policy of France in Nante. These testify to the presence of similar documents in the Chinese archives that are in GA RF (fond. N 10017) there are x-copies, transferred from China (!) applications on entrance to Shanghai (two filles).

Lists for people moved from Shanghai to USSR in 1946-47 (up to 8,000 persons) are in State Archive of Primorye Territory (fond N164, inventory N 1, files NN 26,27 - information of E.Chernolutskaya).

For Shanghai there are fewer much less printed sourses than for Kharbin (in English book " All Shanghai " for 1938 (Library of the Institue of Oriental Studies in Moscow)" and the album Russian in Shanghai" (GAHO) and a few more.

Check out writings of Mr. Melikhov.

Unfortunately, after a year of search I was not able to locate orthodox church registers for 1920-1950s of Kharbin as well as the same of Shanghai.

I believe that in Kharbin there is even more strong policy for hidding ANY documents belonging to foreigners (and especially citizens of former Russian Empire) who created Kharbin. About 2 years ago there was a scientific conference in Kharabarovks State Library devoted to the 100-years anniversary of the beginning of KVZD Some Chineses historians sent reports to it but didn't arrive here due to some political causes. But all reports were printed (with short English summary). And I wrote a report of China researchers who described the history of Kharbinian churchers wery well. It seems to me that he used nesessary sources in China and they are large.

But all my attempt to get an idea where they are, failed. I even sponsored (not so much, about USD 300) a sientific trip to Kharbin a scientist (Doctor of Science in history, btw, I'm of this degree too) from Far East History Institute.
