JOHN RUTLEDGE By T.
G. Rutledge John Rutledge (1750-1830) came to Gwinnett |
|
Co before3/30/1819,
with three white females b. 1770, 1799, and 1805 and three |
|
slaves. He was
listed as a taxpayer in Capt. Cupp's district, (408).1 He settled in the |
|
southern section of
the county near Haynes Creek. When Haynes Creek Baptist |
|
Church was
established 4/1/1826, John Rutledge was a charter member and is buried |
|
there. 2 John
Rutledge was a private in 2nd Georgia Bn. during theRevolutionary War. |
|
He served
1/1/1782-11/4/1783 under Capt. John Lucas and Capt. William |
|
MacKintosh.3 During
the 1827 Georgia Land Lottery, when he lived in Wallis, |
|
District,(571), he
had drew as Rev. soldier.4 He was not shown in the 1830 Gwinnett |
|
census, but this
census listed a James A.? Rutledge b. 1765, with 1 WF b. 1765, 1 WF |
|
15-20, 1 WM 20-30,
2WM 10-15, and 1 WM 90-100. Also shown was a Dewitt |
|
Rutledge, b. 1795, 1
WF b. 1795, with 1 WM 10-15, 1WM 5-10, 1WF 5-10, 2WF - |
|
5. These families
were shown living near our known Rutledge family members. The |
|
relationship of the
two families has not been proven, but the WM 90-100 may have |
|
been John Rutledge.
These two Rutledge families were not shown in subsequent |
|
Gwinnett Co. census
records. John Rutledge is believed to have been the father of |
|
Joseph Rutledge
(1770 SC-1852Ga.) and Jesse Rutledge (1775 SC-1857Ga.). |

Joseph and his wife
Mary (1775 SC- 1853Ga.) came to Gwinnett Co. from Abbevile, |
|
SC and were shown in
the 1830 census with 1 WM 50-60, 1 WM 20-30, 2 WM -5, 1 |
|
WM 90-100, 1
WF50-60, 1 WF 15-20. Jesse Rutledge raised his six children in |
|
Anderson, SC. He
came to Gwinnett in 1853 and lived with his daughter, Louisa |
|
Rutledge Hawthorne,
until his death in 1857. He is buried in the Rutledge- Hawthorne |
|
Cemetery. Gwinnett

unknown, lived with
Joseph and Mary Rutledge from 1830 until his death in 1841. |

Most of Joseph and
