Fleurieu Notes [vol 2] - Excerpts from newspapers from April 1876

The Register - Wednesday, April 5, 1876

CORRESPONDENCE
THE EARLIEST-BORN COLONIST. - Mr. James Hoare of Donnybrook, near Clare, informs us that his son was born, as stated by us, at Rapid Bay in 1836, but that his birthday was November 11. He was christened by Colonel Light "John Rapid," and is now on the Upper Darling with a wife and four children, but would no doubt return to the colony if the Parliament would grant him (as his father thinks it ought to do) a block of 500 acres of land by way of national remembrance to the earliest-born colonist of South Australia.

A CURIOSITY - Mr. Robert Smith, of O'Halloran Hill, has shown us a curious specimin of semi-marine formation. About a year ago one of Mr. Smith's children found on the beach at Worthing a peculiar lump composed of small stones mixed with a sandy conglomerate. This lay in Mr. Smith's verandah for about a year, and on its being broken apart a few days ago inside was found an old penknife. It would be interesting to know how long the incrustation has taken to form. We believe that Mr. Smith has given the specimen to Mr. Waterhouse, the Curator of the Museum.

TENDERS will be received by the undersigned, up to noon of the 21st inst., for the PURCHASE of SECTIONS Nos. 582, 607, 616 and 621, MORPHETT VALE, containing 294 acres of first-class Agricultural Land, well fenced, running water all year round. DEATHS
COOTE - On the 30th March. at Inman Valley, John Coote, aged 70 years; an old colonist and much respected.

MOUNT BARKER ELECTION - Surprise has been expressed that a writ has not been issued for an election to supply the vacancy caused by the retirement of Mr. West-Erskine. His resignation has, we understand, been in the hands of a friend for some time, and no good purpose is, as far as can be seen, served by withholding it.

HALF-AND-HALF - A novel plea was made last week at Port Victor by a man who was charged by P.C. Furner with supplying intoxicating drink to a half-caste native female. He acknowledged that he had given the woman some wine, but said that this was solely upon her representing to him that it was all right, as she being a half-caste he was allowed to let her have half the quantity that he could supply to a white person. The Magistrate, not entertaining the same view of the law, fined the delinquent 20s. and costs.
