Western Samoa was a German protectorate occupied by New Zealand until the
outbreak of World War I in 1914. New Zealand contintued governing Western Samoa
as a trust territory in 1962 when Samoa gained their independence -- the first
Polynesian nation to do so in the 20th century. In 1997, Western Samoa dropped
the word "western" from its name and is now known as Samoa.
