Membership in the Sons of Spanish American War Veterans
Types of Membership
Hereditary Membership. Eligibility to Hereditary Membership in the Sons of Spanish American War Veterans is open to male descendants (sons, grandsons, great-grandsons, nephews, grand nephews, great grand nephews, etc.) of Soldiers, Sailors, or Marines who were regularly mustered into United States Service and served honorably in, or were honorably discharged from, or died in the service of the Army or Navy of the United Stated during the War With Spain, the Philippine Insurrection, and the China Relief Expedition from 1898 to 1903. Membership applicants must be at least twelve (12) years of age and must not have been convicted of any heinous or notorious crime (felony).
Associate Membership. Associate Memberships are available to those who do not have the ancestry to qualify for hereditary membership, but who demonstrate a genuine interest in the War With Spain, the Philippine Insurrection, and the China Relief Expedition from 1898 to 1903, and who can subscribe to the purposes and objects of the Sons of Spanish American War Veterans, may become Associates. An Associate may vote and hold any office except that of National President Associates may not exceed one-third of the total membership of the camp at the time of election.
Junior Membership. A Junior Membership is available for both Hereditary and Associate; a Junior member shall be a male between the ages of five (5) and fourteen (14) years of age.
Real Son's. Any prospective member submitting proof of membership qualifications and lineage that shows they are a Son, Son-in-law, or step son, of a veteran of the Spanish American War, the Philippine Insurrection, or the China Relief Expedition, may be granted a Real Sons membership, with all the same rights and privileges as any other member. Furthermore, Real Sons shall be exempt from payment of all recording fees, per capita dues, and special assessments.
How to Apply
The Dues. When a Brother first joins the Order the total cost for membership is twenty-two dollars ($22.00), this covers the Camps Annual dues ($12.00), and the Initiation Fee ($10.00) which is sent to the National Organization. The yearly dues after this initial fee are twelve dollars ($12.00) per year, this cost covers your Membership card, Certificate, and a subscription to the Camp (The Picket) and National (The National Son) Newsletters. Membership Dues should be made out to the "Micah J. Jenkins Camp No. 164, SSAWV."
The Application. To join the Order a paper application with the necessary documentation of your ancestery must be completed and submitted to the Camp. The following link will take you to a PDF Application.
Where do I sent the Application? All applications for membership should be mailed with the necessary dues to the "Micah J. Jenkins Camp No. 164, Sons of Spanish American War Veterans, 113 Old Forge Road, Chapin, South Carolina 29036."
