Brief History:
Marlboro County was created in 1785 as a part of Cheraws District,
and the county seat is Bennettsville. Welsh
Baptists from Delaware settled in an area of the county known as Welsh Neck
around 1737, and they were later joined by English and Scotch-Irish
settlers. Cotton growing made this a wealthy part of the state prior to
the Civil War. The town of Blenheim was also known for its mineral
springs. General Sherman's troops passed through the county in 1865,
briefly occupying the town of Bennettsville. Some famous Marlboro County
natives are United States Congressman and diplomat Robert Blair Campbell
(1791-1862), United States and Confederate Congressman John McQueen
(1804-1867), and children's advocate Marian Wright Edelman.

About the South Carolina GenWeb Project
In March and April 1996, a group of genealogists organized the Kentucky Comprehensive
Genealogy Database. The idea was to provide a single entry point for all counties in Kentucky, where collected
databases would be stored. In addition, the databases would be indexed and cross-linked, so that even if an
individual were found in more than one county, they could be located in the index.
At the same time, volunteers were found who were willing to coordinate the collection of
databases and generally oversee the contents of the web page.
The SCGenWeb Project is an extension
of the KY GenWeb Project and a part of the USGenWeb Project.
