Welcome to the

Old Salem and Claremont Counties,
South Carolina

Query Page

Salem and Claremont Counties were incorporated into what we now term as the Old Sumter District in January, 1800. Also included within Old Sumter District at that time was Clarendon County, which broke away in 1855. A portion of what had been Salem County became part of the area that forms Lee County which was organized in 1902. All of the area that made up Old Claremont County is still within present day, Sumter County boundaries.

You may learn more about the history of Salem and Claremont Counties by reading about the history of Sumter County here.
