I have three families including my own which believe themselves linked to
Thomas ELDER, bn 1737 died 1799 sometime Lord Provost of Edinburgh.
His father was William ELDER of Loaning and Forneth who
married Elizabeth MAN in 1736.
I have extensive details of the family from William ELDER of Loaning onwards but have been unable to identify his parents. The family of ELDER in the Parish of Clunie is said to be a well known family in Stormont. They are connected through numerous cousin marriages with the FARQUHARONS of Rochalzie, the MACRITCHIES of Craigton and the HUSBAND family of Logie (the MACRITCHIES and ELDERs being of the MACKINTOSH Clan). I am sure that predecessors of William Elder are documented in a book somewhere given their connections.
At present all usual searches are stymied and early links to the other lines of the ELDER family, including one from AVOCH and ROSMARKIE and that of the Australian line of great pastoralists from Kircaldy that gave rise to Elders IXL, remains unresolved. We believe that earlier members of the William/Thomas line included an Alexander ELDER and possibly a William Elder, a "famous" [but so far unknown] engineer bn 1630. Any help, pointers etc would be much appreciated.
