Welcome to the home page for the Kirkcudbrightshire Free Census Project. This project is dedicated to transcribing the 19th century census returns for the Kirkcudbrightshire parishes, and making these transcriptions freely available online as part of the UK Free Census Project (FreeCEN).
1841—We're Getting There!
You may know that the FreeCEN transcriptions for 1841 Kirkcudbrightshire were started some time ago and saw the reign of 2 coordinators come and go. There was also the problem where some of the transcription sheets were mislaid.
Now we have a new team in place and we hope that we will get it cracked this time!
The good news is that we now have 20 parishes online for 1841, with only 8 more to go! That means we are now 67% of the way through the records - only a third left. (see Census Progress for details.)
Kirkcudbrightshire Help
To aid you in interpreting and using the FreeCEN transcriptions for Kirkcudbrightshire, we have provided a page of Kirkcudbrightshire Notes on this site. These include a map of the county, an explanation of the parish changes between censuses, a look at the data available from the Old Parish Registers and a list of online books that you may find useful.
See the links in the sidebar for further selected sources of help. These include a link to the website of the Dumfries & Galloway Family History Society (DGFHS) whose area of interest includes Kirkcudbrightshire.
Beyond 1841?
At the present time, our main efforts are focused on completing work on the 1841 Census. The 1851 census is being checked over before we start that. This will be done under an agreement with the General Register Office for Scotland (GROS) after the LDS broke the agreement we had originally.
When we are ready to start, we shall once again be calling for volunteers for the Kirkcudbrightshire project and you can contact the joint coordinators here: and
