MCCLELLAND / ERWIN

I am hoping to find someone who might have information on my gggrandparents Arthur MCCLELLAND and Annie ERWIN who were born and married in Northern Ireland.  They migrated to Scotland in the early 1800s.  Their children: Margaret b.about 1813, John, b. 1817, and  William b. 1818, all in Inch Parish, where Annie and Arthur were working at Little Lochans.

Then they migrated to Old Luce Parish where Alexander was born in 1821.  They then migrated to the Kirkinner area in Wigtownshire where they worked on the Over Airies farm (1841 Census) and Slochabbert Farm (1851 Census).  Arthur died prior to the family emigrating to American in 1851.  The family went to Michigan where they settled and raised their families in Oakland Co. I am most interested in finding their Irish roots...where in Ireland they lived before going to Scotland.  Any information would be greatly appreciated.

McLEAN / HANNAY
I am now seeking the marriage of Agnes McLEAN (a slight change here) to one (William) Robert HANNAY ( He seems to have discarded William)from about 1790 to 1800 in the Parish of Kirkinner, Wigtownshire. They are reported to have had offspring.....James, Ann, Janet,?, whom I believe I may have found in 1819 in Ballantrae, Ayrshire. Descendants always referred to the father as Robert.

I have found a son James, to the above, dob 3/8/1800, at Kirkinner. Thus the names (with a little spin), and the dates seen to tie in.
Does anyone know anything about this family or want to know?

I am looking for the marriage between Alexander CLUMPHEY / McCLUMPHA and Marion/ Mary BLACK abt 1822. This most probably took place in Dumfrieshire. her Parish, as I have been unable to trace it on the IGI or OPR for all other counties.

Looking for parents of Margaret KEVAND b Culkuhirk, Kirkinner 1823. Married Andrew Grant  McCLEAN   at Kirkinner 18/11/1849. I have quite a bit of information about Kevans and Kevands of Sorbie, Kirkinner and Wigtown Parish, but haven't been able to tie any of it up with Margaret KEVAND. Any help would be appreciated. This includes a large chart of the three parishes covering a couple of hundred years, but it is patchy - with names and periods, but not always with links. It has been drawn up from IGI's MI's and some Newsparers of the time. It might be of interest to someone who has researched these parishes.

BALLANTYNE

Eliza Jane is my Great Grandmother. She was born at Kirkmaiden, I think, in the early 1860s or late '50s and migrated with her family to New Zealand, I think, at the age of 12. I remember her well because she lived with us, but have little information about her. Her father's name was Robert or William and her mother's namewas Elisabeth du Vois, a French woman. Her daughters were rather coy about their ages, but I know her middle daughter, my great aunt Margaret, died in 1987 at the age of 102. If you have any information on the Ballatynes or du Vois or can direct me elsewhere ,I would be grateful.

MCHARG/ McNELLIE / McNEILLIE / DALRYMPLE

PORTPATRICK PARISH, WIGTOWNSHIRE.

James McHARG & Jean McNELLIE of this parish were married at Portpatrick on 20th Nov. 1823. They had 3 children born and baptised in the same parish, Margaret,1824, John Irvin, 1832 and James  1834. Another son Thomas, was born in 1837 at Stranraer while another daughter Janet was born in 1828 at Muirkirk, Ayrshire.

I have no information as to where and when James  McHARG Snr.was born, orwho his parents were. Was it in Scotland or Ireland? In the 1841 Census of Stranraer , in Little Ireland, I found Jean McHARG 43, John 9, and James 7. Her husband James and Thomas were absent and Margaret  was away working. I could not find Janet.

I could not find the family in any of the 1851 censuses I looked at but in the 1861 census at Mill Hill St. I found Margaret married to David  MOODY and the mother-in-law, Jane  McHARG was living with them. She was a widow. Where and when did James McHARG die??

Jean McHARG died at Stranraer  in 1876. The Registration of Death states she was 78, the widow of James McHARG, butcher, her father was James MCNEILLIE and her mother's maiden was ......? DALRYMPLE. In the 1861 census she gave her place of birth as Glen Luce, Wigtownshire.I have not been able to locate her birth or parents. Any help or suggestions on these families would be most welcome.

GALLOCHER / CAUGHE / SMITH

My Great-grandfather, John GALLOCHER was born in Whithorn, WIG., probably around 1824. His mother's name was Grace CAUGHE and his father's name was GALLOCHER but given name not recorded. According to the Parish Register of Kirkinner, he was married to Helen SMITH (born Stoneykirk, WIG., around 1825, father's name James SMITH) at Whauphill on 10 July 1845 by the Rev James REID. (but where in Whauphill?)

They had three children born between 1845 and 1849 when they migrated to Australia -

- Agnes McCulloch GALLOCHER, born 26 September 1845 at ? Whauphill
- James GALLOCHER, born 25 October 1847 at Over Airies
- another James GALLOCHER (birth details unknown)

Both the James died before 1849.

John, Helen and Agnes migrated to Australia (or more precisely the Colony of Victoria as it was then) in February 1849 aboard the barque "Saxon". John changed the family name to GALLAHAR after arrival.

I am interested in finding out about the GALLOCHER, CAUGHE and SMITH families in Wigtownshire at these times and would be most grateful for any information.

MCKISSACK

MCKISSACK, Thomas & MCKISSACK, Janet were reported to immigrate to America leaving Stranraer (don't know if they were from this region or another) and entering New York in May 1775 on the Gale. My family history in America goes back to a Thomas McKissack., birth shown as 12-12-1775 in North Carolina and died 4-24-1826. He married a Jeanette Susan Cogle  Buckstan Thompson.

Second wife was Lucy Hudson.

Since I can't seen to go back further than this Thomas McKissack, I wonder if there isn't some sort of connection with these two Thomas McKissacks and the Janet and Jeanette McKissick....maybe someone has wrong dates. I would appreciate any insight or any information on any other McKissacks immigrating to America which could be of the same relationship.

My Thomas McKissack had children through Lucy Hudson (who first married an Isaac Edwards and had a son Isham by him) They are listed as William 11 14 1781, Rebecca 1782, Archibald 1 30 1789, Spivey 9 18 1790 and Susan 1795.

Archibald Married Susan Harrison . One of their children is Cynthia Moselle McKissack who married a Dr Joseph Webb Morris and these are my gr, gr, grandparents.

LOGHRY / KERR

I have a Hugh Loghry b. 25 July 1856 Inch, Wigtown Scotland. His parents are:Owen Loghry & Catherine Kerr, no dates for them. The family seems to have immigrated to Ireland at about the same time, but cannot find any one anywhere with this surname over there, so was surprised to see this some time back. This is all the information I have on them. This is a later date than the time I find them in the US, but that's ok too. I wonder always if this is just another spelling for the Loughry family that got corrupted coming to the US by the Immigration service. The rest I found came from Ireland, where our family supposedly came from. Any help would be appreciated.

PAUL / PALING

My g-g-g-grandfather Charles Paul was born in Wigtown in 1782. His bapt. record lists him as Charles Paling, son of John Paling and Nicolas Murray. He was married in Penninghame in 1809 to Mary MacDowall. There were other Pauls married in Penninghame around the same time, and they are probably Charles' brother and sisters: James married Jannet Andrews, Jane married James Murchie, and Dorothea married Robert McNeillie.

Charles' eldest daughter, Nicolas b 1810 married a William McLellan in 1838 and lived in Old Luce, and his eldest son John b 1812 married a Jane Hannah in 1835 in Mochrum. .

Charles and his wife, John and his wife, and Charles' other two children Jane and James emigrated to New Jersey USA arounf 1837. Nicolas and William McLellan stayed in Old Luce and had at least eight children. Family lore says that Charles Paul was somehow related to John Paul Jones, the US Naval hero ( or pirate, depending on your point of view).

Any help you can give me on this family will be greatly appreciated.

McKAIG / McKEIG

The name I am searching for is McKAIG OR McKEIG from Port Patrick, Wigtownshire.  Jane McKaig  was born in Wigtownshire about 1830.  She married John LOVE , perhaps in Paisley or Renfewshire,  and they came to Australia after first going to New Zealand. Jane's parents were possibly Thomas McKeig, stonemason (deceased in 1898)mother Martha Dallas.  They must have married young, as on John Love's death certificate, it states he was only 19 yrs at marriage.  He died in 1892 aged 65 yrs. Any help would be appreciated.

WHITE

I am seeking information on the ancestors of Robert WHITE, a Scottish emigrant to America around 1784 who studied law and eventually became a justice on what is now the Supreme Court of Tennessee. All US accounts say he was born in Wigtonshire 6 January 1767. From letters his father wrote him, we know he was the son of William WHITE of Sorbie Parish, who lived at Creich as a tenant farmer on the land of Lord Galloway. Robert matriculated at the University of Glasgow in 1782, where in the rolls he was identified as the eldest natural son of William White, farmer from Sorby in Wigtonshire. From his father’s letters, we know his father was married after Robert emigrated (to Margaret MCGOWAN?) and had nine children, including eldest son Charles and second son Dunbar. From other letters we know Robert had an aunt Mary, presumably his father’s sister. I am seeking a record of Robert’s birth, any information about his paternal and maternal ancestors. I am particularly interested in discovering who his mother was (and information about her marriage to William), and a date of William’s death. I would of course be happy to share the information I’ve gathered on Judge White with any who are interested.

McKINNELL

I am looking for information on my immigrant ancestors, who left the village of Kirkinner in Wigtonshire in 1855, and came to Elgin, Kane County, Illinois .Peter McKinnell was born 26 June 1825, died 9 December 1904 in Elgin, Kane County Illinois, son of James McKinnell, born 1785-1795 in Kirkinnner, died 1862 in  Kirkinner (?) James was son of (parents and dates unknown). James married Janet Hawthorne (birthdate and wedding date unknown) , daughter of John Hawthorne and Elizabeth Cleaves (dates and parents unkown). Peter married Jessie McDowell 20 April 1854 in Kirkinner, Wigtonshire Jessie was born 2 February 1834 either in Kirkinner or Newton Stuart parish and died 30 December 1901 in Elgin, Kane County, Illinois.  Jessie was daughter of Charles McDowell (parents unknown)who died before 12/31/1836.  Jessie was the daughter of Ellen Patterson (dates unknown). Ellen Patterson was the daughter of James Patterson and Janet McHarg (dates and parents unknown).

Note 1: I know very little about Peter’s siblings, except that a John McKinnell may have stayed in Great Britain, and had a daughter Flora McKinnell. I was also told that Peter and two of his brothers emigrated from Liverpool about the same time, late in 1855, but that they went to separate temperate climates: Peter to the United States, another brother to Argentina, and a third to Australia (I can remember my parents hosting a visit from the Australian relatives when I was a child, but the family name had changed to Halley).  I also know that the McKinnell’s were dairy farmers, and I know that Peter worked on the farm of cousin (name unknown to me) when he arrived in Illinois.

Note 2: I know Jessie 6th of seven children, and that the fourth child was Mary McDowell, and fifth was John McDowell.I guess what I am looking for is: 1: information on siblings of Peter McKinnell and Jessie McDowell, and 2. additional information on their ancestors.

James McKinnell.
