BASS
Looking into my paternal grandmothers background. Her maiden
name was BASS; father Thomas and grandfather (my
great-great) Nathaniel or Nathan, all of Plattsville WI.
Probably Nathaniel was born to a Nathaniel or Nathan of
Barren County KY. Heading sourthward . I learn from
genealogist in Glasgow KY that the BASS "tribe" arrived
Barren Co KY in time for adult males and/or heads of
households to be represented in 1810 and 1820 censuses, but
none in 1830 census. Only clue to origins is single
reference to probate of a will of decedent in Baltimore MD
filed by one of the KY Basses indicating origin in the
"Union District of South Carolina". KY genealogist states
they were "certainly Baptists." Does anyone have any clue as
to the origin of these heads of household listed in KY
censuses of 1810 and 1820: Nathaniel or Nathan BASS,
Metheldred BASS, Philamon BASS, Isaac BASS, Elizabeth BASS.
These folk appeared to move more or less together to KY and
then, from KY to---probably IN of IL. A Phillemon BASS was
listed in Union County in 1790 and 1800.

BECKHAMS
Searching for other descendants and information about JOHN
BECKHAM, SR. and his wife ELIZABETH "LIBBY" HENDERSON
BECKHAM. JOHN & ELIZABETH were married 12 August, 1761,
in Granville Co., NC. They were in Union County, SC, by at
least 10 July, 1768, when their daughter, MARY "POLLY"
"MOLLY" BECKHAM was born. MARY married JAMES CLAYTON
STRIBLING, 11 Nov., 1787. According to "Union County
Heritage, 1981," #676, JOHN BECKHAM was one of the
Revolutionary War Soldiers buried in Union County. I assume
that another of their children was JOHN BECKAM, JR.
According to our family legend documented in letters written
1900-1905, CLAYTON STRIBLING was scalped by Tories during
the American Revolution, and left to die. The Tories
expected whoever found his body to believe that Indians had
scalped him. MARY BECKHAM heard that her sweetheart, had
been wounded. With a slave she swam a river to rescue
CLAYTON, to bring him back to her home, and to nurse him
back to a healthier condition--although he never fully
recovered.

However, I have been told by older relatives that
Isiah/Isaiah and a brother (possibly named Josiah) came to

they have heard the name Hez or Hezekiah and thinks that he
may have been Isiah's father. 1820 census records of Union
County, lists in Isiah's household, 1 male and 1 female,
between ages 16 and 26. Isiah was in Hall County, GA in
1830, in Newton County, GA in 1840, and in St. Clair County,

BOBO / DANNER
I believe my gg-grandparents were once slaves of the white
Bobos. It appears that a man named Barham BOBO or Sampson
BOBO brought my gg-grandparents, Edward (Ed) and Lou DANNER
to Mississippi from SC in the 1850s. My ancestors chose the
name DANNER, and I haven't figured out where the name came
from. Since my gg-grandfather was born in SC, I believe that
one possibility is that Ed DANNER or his parents were once
slaves of some white DANNERS of SC, and when he became a
free man, he chose the name DANNER instead of
BOBO.
I was wondering have you run
across any persons with the surname DANNER living in Union
County, SC. The BOBOs came from the Spartanburg, Laurens,
and Union County areas, and I was wondering were there any
persons (Black or White) with the surname DANNER living in
the same area. Thank you very much.

BURGESS
Looking for husband of Trinity BURGESS b. abt 1823 d. 16 Sep
1899, buried at Grassy Pond Church Cemetery, Cherokee Co. I
have located Trinity BURGESS on the 1850 Census in Union Co.
as head of house with children: James E. and Lumuel I. On
the 1860 Census James and Lemuel Burgess was listed with a
William Bevis. While a "Twin" BURGESS (whom I believe is
Trinity) was listed with a Felix BUREGSS next door. I have
checked several marriage books for SC. I have hit a dead end
on this line because I've been unable to locate a spouse for
Trinity. Any information on the BURGESS line would be
helpful. Thanks.
