PINION / PINNELL FAMILY
OF UNION COUNTY
Am interested in corresponding with others that have
knowledge of Jonathan Pinion/Pinnell, Peter Pinnell, and
Lewis Pinion/Pinnell first found in Union County, SC in
1783. Jonathan was married twice (1) Jemima, surname unknown
(2) Rebecca Jarrard. He was later found in Spartanburg and
Greenville Counties in SC. After 1810, he moved to Jackson
now Hall County, Georgia where he died intestate after 1830.
Peter Pinnell married Nancy Yarbrough, daughter of Ambrose
Yarbrough of Union County, SC. Peter left SC ca 1804 and
moved to Kentucky and then to Crawford County, Missouri. Am
not certain what happened to Lewis. I do know that his
wife's name was Rebecka, her surname unknown. I think that
he may have gone to Kentucky and then to Missouri with his
brother, Peter. Peter and Lewis Pinion/Pinnell were
documented Rev. War Soldiers. Jonathan was suspected to be
one as he stated that he was in the 1827 Land Lottery of
Georgia. There was a John Pinnell who served in the combined
NC/SC Second Regiment in the SC records. I would like to
know who the parents of these three men were. My grandfather
Pinnell knew that the name was originally Pinion and he
stated that the Pinions were of "Black Dutch" ancestry. I
have substantiated that the names Pinion and Pinnell were
used interchangeably by Jonathan and Lewis Pinion/Pinnell in
the same legal document in South Carolina records. An
unverified source states that Peter Pinnell was a son of
William Pinnell and Sara BAGLY. The Rev. Pension of Peter
Pinnell states that he was born on the Catawba River. This
William Pinnell is presumed to be the William Pannel who was
living between the Broad and the Catawba Rivers 1778-79. How
are Jonathan Pinion/Pinnell, Peter Pinnell, and Lewis
Pinion/Pinnell related to John Pinnion/Pinnell who was
living in Bute County, North Carolina in 1771 and then by
1790 was in Franklin County? How are they related to Reuben
and his brother Benjamin Pinion alias Pennel who were in
Rev. service in Surry County, North Carolina and later found
in Anson and Wilkes County?

married in SC. The reason we are convinced that this is the
right family is because we have found records of other
families names such as BELEU, SPRINGER and COMER associated
with Richard POWEL in Union Co. Descendants of these
families all moved to Lawrence Co., TN. Any information on
this family appreciated. Will share.

POWELL / WILLIARD /
BAILEY / HILL
Searching for information on the POWELL, WILLARD, BAILEY
& HILL names in Union Co., SC. Especially looking for
leads on my G-G-Grandparents WILLIAM POWELL & MARTHA
WILLARD. Martha was the dau. of JAMES WILLARD &
WINNEFRED HILL & the name of one of her brothers is
believed to be WILLIAM DALTON WILLARD. Also believe that one
of her brother in laws was a S. TURNER BAILEY. I have them
listed in the 1860 Union Co. census (& the 1850 Laurens
Co.). Most all my family records mention Union & Cross
Keys, SC A Laurens Co. researcher gave me the following
information: "...based on the census entries, maps, etc. I
found Wm Powell, 39, Martha, 29, James f, 6, and other
Powells on page 249 of the 1850 census. According to my
analysis, they lived on the Enoree River side of Rehoboth
Church in Scuffletown Township." I'd also like to know the
modern day location of SCUFFLETOWN township is if any one
knows. Since the boundaries of several counties border each
other I am placing queries for all these adjoining counties.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, Larry J. Powell /

I am looking for any information concerning the PRINCE
family of Union Co. Looking for John, born about 1790. John
H. PRINCE, Jr. was in Warren Co., TN in 1840 and spent the
rest of his life in Dade Co., GA. He had a brother, Hosea
PRINCE also in Union Co. There is a possibility that John H.
was the son of John who was listed in Daniel PRINCE's will
as his eldest son. Anyone searching this family?
