From Linda Blackwelder:
Thanks for the census report...it does confirm one thing, that he was
probably married twice. According to something else I read, Isaac Campbell married
Elizabeth B. Walker @ 1825 and it appears he was in his 60s when he married
her. She was about 20 yrs old. He had at least two children by her...Dr. A. P. Campbell and Samuel L. Campbell (Blind Sam of Clover)..I understand
there was an article about Blind Sam and his woodworking in a recent
edition of the Metro issue of Charlotte Observer. Did you do that? Of
course, there is always the possibility that he had a son named Isaac
Alexander, Jr. that married Elizabeth B. Walker.
Supposedly Isaac Alexander's father was James Campbell (buried at Bethal
also and b. @ 1723) but he may have been the son of a young James Campbell,
b. @ 1746. I found in 1764, the old James deeded 147 acres on Allison
Creek to Andrew Campbell (also buried at Bethel, b. 1733) It was part of a
tract that was granted to James in 1754...This was in Meck. Co. records,
but of course, the New Acquistion had not taken place yet. So, this set of
Campbells have been in York Co. a long time. Sounds like some of the first
to arrive there. Also, I saw in one of your Quarterlys that Isaac
Alexander also had an Indian Land lease.
____
I enjoyed your article on Hugh White, in our latest issue of THE
QUARTERLY. I have been recently researching him, because I believe he
was married to an ancestor of mine, Sarah S. Garrison White
(~1768-1840). She was a sister of Josina Garison. I have a York Co. land
deed involving her and her nephew, Valdura N. Garrison selling 194 acres
to a Robert L. Armstrong, Jan 10, 1822. It appears her first husband was
a man named John Campbell(dec'd). Witnesses to this transaction were:
Isaac Campbell & Joseph F. White (Hugh's son).
There is a statement attached to this deed from Hugh White: "To
all to whom these presents may concern, Know Ye that I, Hugh White, of
the State of S.'Carolina & York District, do hereby relinquish or assign
unto Robert L. Armstrong of the State Aforesaid all my right & Title to
the one half of the within mentioned freehold. If any right and Title
was Vested in me or my heirs it heretofore In writings hereof I have
here unto set my hand and affixed my seal this 10th day of January, one
thousand eight hundred and (twenty) two." Signed, Hugh White. Wit: Isaac
Campbell & Joseph F. White.
From Thomas Garrison:
In the probate file of Hugh White, 1828, Case #44, File # 1843;
Joseph F. White, Etal, Exors., Sarah is mentioned as his "beloved wife."
In Sarah's last will and testament, Oct. 12, 1833, Case # 47, File #
1989, she defines Valdaura Norris Garison, as her nephew (son of Josina
Garison). He is also her executor. She also names a niece, Sarah White
Garison (daughter of Josina Garison), who died in July of 1834, about a
month after her 16th birthday. She is buried in Ebenezer Churchyard,
close to Josina Garison.
