EARLY BIRTH RECORDS FROM SD
These vital records are fully searchable and a great resource.
HOMESTEAD PAPERS
First Papers" were filed by the immigrant when he first arrived in the US.
"Second Papers" were the actual citizenship documents when the person
became a citizen, usually about 5 years later.
Both sets of papers are important -- and each may contain different
information, depending on the time frame.Since homesteads were only available to US citizens, the immigrants eagerly
went through the naturalization process so they would be eligible for
homestead land.

About the South Dakota GenWeb Project
- In June, 1996, a group of genealogists organized the South Dakota Comprehensive Genealogy Database. The idea was to provide a single entry point for all counties in South Dakota, where collected databases would be stored. In addition, the databases would be indexed and cross-linked, so that even if an individual were found in more than one county, they could be located in the index.
At the same time, volunteers were found who were willing to coordinate the collection of databases and generally oversee the contents of the web page. The person responsible for this county Mary Buchholz. If you could possibly volunteer to help with this page, please contact Mary Buchholz or Joy Fisher.
