My grandparents
Frank and Effie CORE (two children, Esta CORE and Eva CORE) homesteaded
in what is now Haakan County from around 1907-1912 north of Philip. My
brother and I know it was near the settlement of Wellsburg and not very
far from Hil(l)and or Marietta. We have the original deed describing the
location and a diary my grandfather kept. My brother and I will be
visiting the area in mid-June, 2000 and wonder if anybody can tell us
anything about the general area and if there are still roads going out to
the Wellsburg church cemetary. We have topo maps and other information,
but wonder if the general area is accessible. We recently completed
reading the book Bachelor Bess and found many parallels to our
gransfather's accounts. My brother and I are the children of Eva CORE
Trabert. When I was very small my parents, grandparents, and I visited
Philip in 1955 and as I recall they tried to drive around and locate
different landmarks and people. I have wondered about them, the
Philip,South Dakota area, the harsh life and times of the prairie. Any
assitance would be greatly appreciated. Thank You. Douglas Trabert

My uncle, Haakon
KRONEN, is said by family to have been the first baby born in the newly-
named county. Sorry, I don't have his exact birthdate, but his father,
Lars C. KRONEN and his grandfather, also KRONEN, homesteaded on the land,
and had a part in naming Haakon County after the king of their former
homeland, Norway.
Some of Haakon's siblings were also born in the area, namely Phillip and
Mitchell. I have a photo of my mother's school class, standing on the
wide-open prairie, on her graduation day from 8th grade that I would be
happy to share. My mother still remembers the names of the others in the
picture - as most of them were her cousins!
My question - if I don't have a description of the homestead, could I
still locate the area if I could come close to the date of the claim?
