They all swore the guns had been unloaded
Another little hunting ditty for you. We were living in Ely, NV., working for
the Atomic Energy Commission (yes, the houses (3) of ill repute were just down
the street from our house, but that'll make a little Christmas story!)
All of the men on our crew decided to go hunting this one Saturday. Everyone met
at our house and at the end of the day, returned to our house for dinner and
whatever. Me, being as terrified of guns as I am, would NEVER allow anyone in
the house with a gun with a shell in it. I met them at the door and made them
make darned sure
their guns were empty. They convinced me, but what do I know about guns?
When they came into the house, the guns were placed on our bed, out of the way.
After dinner, we were playing:
cards when this blast went off ... followed by 10 seconds (seemed like 10
minutes) of total silence, then about six people jumped up at the same
time and ran for the bedroom.
When the goose down from the pillow finally settled down, we saw two
little big-eyed three and four-year-old
boys, each pointing at the other and also in total shock. There, at the head of
the bed, was the hole the bullet passed through after it blew the pillow away.
We went outside, the bullet had passed between two vehicles and
off across the highway into the hillside or the sign that was in its path.
If we had nothing else to be thankful for, we were thankful the boys were
alright and that no vehicle was driving by when the gun went off. So, so much
for making sure all guns are empty. But, there are other things to be thankful
for.
And, if there has to be a moral to every story, I guess the moral of this
story must be "if you put your loaded gun on the bed, move your feather
pillow,"... I don't know.
Grandson Jason is coming for the Thanksgiving weekend. I'm very thankful for
that. Life IS good. I guess if we take time out of our hectic day we can find
lots to be thankful about. Sitting up and taking nourishment, for starters.
Speaking of sitting up and taking nourishment, everyone eat lots of turkey,
mashed potatoes and giblet gravy. Some sour cream raisin pie would be nice.
After your nap, play a mean game of cards to work up an appetite to re-stuff at
dark ...or, if the weather permits, put up your Christmas lights
Have a warm and happy Thanksgiving!
