Keep those guns unloaded

All of the hunters and the hunting activity around here has gotten me to thinking about when we lived in New Mexico and had given one of the boys a BB gun for his birthday, complete with all of the instructions about gun safety and never pointing at anyone or don’t shoot birds, etc. We watched proudly as he did all of the right things and was so responsible about making sure there were no BBs left in the gun when he put it up in the TOP OF THE CLOSET out of reach.

So one day I’m doing my housewife things in the house and the kids are playing outside being such good children as they were expected to be (remember, I took some basic training in Grandma Stallman’s house and rule number one was that kids were to be seen and NOT heard.) All of a sudden there was this horrific scream and I ran for the door as Sindi came running into the house, blood pumping from her forehead with every heartbeat.

Apparently, they had found a stray BB and he told her to stand on the porch while he stood at the gate. He wanted to see if he could hit her "between the eyes" from that distance! Long story short … she did live through it as we all did. I guess the moral of this story is if you find a stray BB don’t give it to your brother, or if you do give it to him … for goodness sake … don’t be his target!
