 Nov. 20, 1930 –

The sad news reached Kennebec Saturday of  the sudden death of Mrs. Jorgen J. Boe, mother of our townsman Henry Boe, at Rochester, Minn.

     Perle Cosgrove, Reliance, was taken ill at the Ben Schooler home where he was picking corn. The doctor has pronounced meningitis.

     A marriage license was issued to Steven Meyers, Kennebec, and Irene Wolf, of Presho.

 Nov. 23, 1950

   Mrs. Lyle McManus came home Friday from the hospital, leaving the baby for a time longer.

   George Hahn brought his wife and new daughter home from the Sanitarium and all concerned are doing nicely;

   A daughter was born Nov. 15 to Mr. and Mrs. Phil Crouch. Mrs. Crouch is the former Lucille Anderson of Kennebec.

Nov. 24, 1960

   In a thriller here Friday night, the Mt. :Vernon Mustangs defeated the Reliance Long-horns, 52-50. Schindler led the Reliance scoring attack with 14 points.

   Mr. and Mrs. Otto Schoessler, Mrs. Rosina Schoessler attended the baptismal services for Richard John, son of Mrs. and Mrs. Richard Schoessler of Pierre.

   Mr. and Mrs. Gaylord Choal are the parents of a baby boy born at the St. Joseph hos-pital Wednesday .

   Mrs. and Mrs. Lyle Halverson are the parents of a baby girl born Nov. 17 at the Chamberlain Hospital. The little lady weighed 7 lbs. and 2 ozs.

Nov. 20, 1975 .

    The Elmer Schelskes took the Evert Fletchers and the Orvin Kindopps out for supper Sunday in honor of the Schelske's 35th wedding anniversary.

Mar. 13, 1930

   With new equipment, clean stock and newly furnished quarters, Charles Wheeler,

Reliance is now nicely established in the meat and grocery business in the west side of Main Street, in the Cullen Building, formerly occupied by the Reliance Post Office.

    Word was received of the death of A.C. Wells at Jefferson, Iowa, on Thursday, Mar. 6, at the age of 88 years. Mr. Wells had been an extensive landowner in this vicinity for a num-ber of years.

    Mr. and Mrs. Harry Gerard are the proud parents of a little girl, Marjorie Lynette, who arrived at the Gerard home Mar. 7 to make her home with them.

   A company of friends gathered at the Theodore A. Gerard home Monday evening as a farewell to Mr. and Mrs. Ed Eggens, who left the next day for Vermillion, where they will make their home.

50 Years Ago Mar. 9,1950

   A farewell party was held for the Sern Abrahamson family at the Lawrence Abrahamson home Wednesday evening. A gift was presented to Sern and Lola

   Virgil Burke, Spencer, nephew of Mrs. George Lester, was one of the bunch who got  stranded here the day of the blizzard. He spent the night at the Lester home.

40 Years Ago Mar. 10, 1960

   Mrs. Lena Huntsman was the hostess at a birthday party Sunday evening in her honor at the home of Viola Berg.

    Mr. and Mrs. Ancil Lester attended a birthday dinner for their six-year-old grand-daughter, Debbie Cahill, Chamberlain.

    Mr. and Mrs. Randy Whittock, Lyman, are the proud parents of twin girls born last Thursday, Mar. 3.

    Mr. and Mrs. Harold Moulton, Rapid City, are the parents of a baby girl born Feb. 26.

40 Years Ago Mar. 13, 1975

    Mr. and Mrs. Ken Wonnenberg are the parents of a daughter born Mar. 1 in the Gregory Hospital. She has been named Brenda Kay.

    A Sunday dinner guest of Mr. and Mrs. George Spotts was Agnes Manger who joined them for birthday cake, ice cream, and coffee to honor George on his birthday.

Word was received Sunday that

    Paul Cartensen, Pringle, had died last week and burial was Saturday at Pringle. The Carstensens formerly lived southeast of town.

25 Years Ago June 2, 1977

    Funeral services were held May 31, for Egbert Hodgin at Stayton, Ore. Mr. Hodgin, a former Lyman County area resident, died May 26. He is a brother of Art Hodgin of Reliance and Harold Hodgin of Oacoma.

    Funeral services for Frederick "Fred" Hoffer were held May 31, from Trinity Lutheran Church in Reliance.   (more)

    A.J. Barrow, who owned one of the largest ranches in Lyman County for over 33 years, was buried today:   (more)

    The Iona school had three graduates this year: Miss Irene Thompson, Miss Lucile

Thompson, and Katheryne Kennedy;

    The Reliance High School graduating class, May 24 was the first class graduating from Reliance High School that started in as freshmen. (See schools/RHS)

    Harold Thomas, one of our Kennebec young men, will be graduated from the pharmacy

division of State College at Brookings, June 10.

June 1, 1922

    Kennebec aspires to become the county seat of Lyman County. (See courthouse battle)

    A.F. Cooley and wife bought out our newspaper and will take it over June 1.

    Mabelle Irene Warren and Roger Wesley Walker were married on May 25 at her parent's home.

Jan. 25, 1951

     Mr. and Mrs. Carl Anderson are rejoicing over the arrival of a baby girl born Wednesday night at the Chamberlain Hospital, her name being Linda Carlene.

Feb. 24, 1921

    A baby boy came to the home I of Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Gust, Saturday the 19th and petitioned for care until he should reach his majority.

Feb. 15, 1951

    Two games were played in Oacoma Hall Monday evening, February 5th between the Brule Braves and the Oacoma Hawks. In the first game played by the A team Clayton Big Eagle was high point man for Brule with 16 points. Donny Weber was high point man for Oacoma with 10.

Jan. 22, 1931

   Officers are searching over a wide scope of country for Ted DeMarsche, rancher of White

River who escaped from Sheriff Callan while another official made the journey to White River to obtain a warrant.

Feb. 13, 1941

    Officials in Lyman County were undecided today if the death of Hugh Lawson, Reliance

farmer who was found in his burning home northeast of Reliance, was murder or suicide. Sheriff O.J. Murphy of Kennebec said Monday morning that there was a possibility of

foul play in the death of the 41-year-old bachelor farmer. "I arrived at the Lawson place,

Murphy said, "about six thirty Sunday morning and with the help of neighbors,  pulled the badly burned body from the smoldering ruins. We found a shotgun near the body and both barrels of the gun had been discharged” . Neighbors reported the gun was normally kept in another room of the house.

Nov. 13, 1930

    Former Kennebec residents, Mr. and Mrs. V.L. Vesley are the parents of an eight pound son born Monday, Nov. 10  in Yankton.

    Former Kennebec resident, Herman Lorenz, died at Mitchell Monday, Nov. 10. He was town Marshall at one time. He will be buried in Kennebec cemetery.

   Merle J. Allen of Plankinton and Miss Dolly Harmon, who lives south of Presho, were married by Justice A. V. Hall last Saturday evening.

    Mr. and Mrs. John Muldoon, who live seven miles southwest of Kennebec are rejoicing over the arrival of a daughter at their home last Friday.

    Born to Mr. and Mrs. Jay McGee, a girl, last Thursday.

Nov. 16, 1950

   Gene Bunnell brought his wife and new baby girl and other two babies home last week.

   Mr. and Mrs. George Hahn are the' proud parents of a baby girl born at the  Chamberlain hospital.

    Stanley Dice brought his wife and new baby son home from the hospital Monday.

    Mr. and Mrs. W.B. Hight celebrated their 62nd anniversary Nov. 11th. hey are the grandparents of Mrs: Roy Schwartz.

   Former Kennebec lad, Dr. John O'Leary and Miss Jean Ardyce(Macheledt) were married at St. Olaf's Church in Minneapolis on Saturday, Sept. 23.    More.

Nov. 17, 1960

   Funeral services were held at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Reliance Friday, Nov. 4  for Raymond Stallman, 49.  He was born to Clement and Anna Stallman Oct. 27, 1911 and died Oct, 31, 1960.   More.

  Burial services were held from St. Michael's Catholic Church Tuesday morning for Mrs. Edna Casey, 76. She was born in March 1884 in Pine Bluffs, MO. She married Mr. Phil Casey in Kennebec in 1908.    More.

    Mr.. and Mrs. Roger Venecamp of Presho are the parents of a baby girl born at the Chamberlain hospital.

   Mr. and Mrs. Curley Schoenfelder are the parents of their third baby daughter Nov. 8 at

the hospital in Chamberlain.

Nov. 13, 1975

   Funeral services were held Monday for Jobe Marsden, 76, at the United Methodist Church in Reliance. He was born Dec. 23, 1898 at Albion Prairie, WI. He died  Nov. 7 at his daughters home north of Reliance.    More.

Dec. 23, 1930

Mr. and Mrs. Howard Hansen are rejoicing over the arrival of a son born at the Chamberlain Sanitarium early last Thursday morning. Mrs. Hansen and the little heir are doing splendidly.

Nov. 6, 1930

    Miss Mary Margaret Murphy and Mrs. Alvin Muldoon were united in marriage at St. Michael's church Tuesday morning. They will reside on farm 6 miles west of Kennebec.

   Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at the McColley Funeral Home in Chamberlain for Mr. T.J. Campbell.

    Miss Lena Drier and Elmer Cleland and Miss Josephine Webber and August Drier were

united in marriage at the Holy Angels church in Presho Nov. 5 at 9 o’clock.

Nov. 9, 1950

   William Howe, a Presho farmer lost both 1egs in a corn picker last Sunday when his clothing caught in the machine drawing him into the snapping rollers severing both legs

to the knees.

   Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Bice are the proud parents of a baby boy born Sunday morning.

   Mr. and Mrs. Albert Kenobbie are the parent of a baby girl born Sunday at their home.

   Homer Huddleston lost a toe due to a hunting accident in the Black Hills. The rifle discharged and mangled his big toe, later having it amputated at the hospital.

    Herbert "Bud" Walters of Vermillion, former old-timer of the area, passed away about three weeks ago.

Nov. 10, 1960

    Mrs. Etta Schumacher, 80, is the oldest woman in Lyman County to cast her ballot. She has voted in the same county since she began voting.

   Former Chamberlain publisher, Sherman Bates, 77, died Nov. 6 at the Chamberlain hospital. While publisher of the Register he purchased the Chamberlain Leader and

consolidated the two papers.

    Mr. and Mrs. Ed Suhl are the parents of a baby girl born at the Chamberlain hospital. Named Paula Ann.

    Fred Alward signed legal document transferring a lot on Main Street to the Town of Kennebec for use of a new library building.

Nov. 27, 1930

    Perle Cosgrove, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Jay Cosgrove, of Reliance, passed away last

Thursday at the Sanitarium in Chamberlain due to spinal meningitis from which he suffered four days. He was born March 22, 1910 and died Nov. 20, 1930.    More.

    Miss Frances Josephine, Morris, and Mr. Vivian Cleveland of Los Angeles, CA, were united in marriage at St. Michael's Church Wednesday morning.

    Mrs. Sarah E. Snowe, one of the eldest persons in Lyman County died at her Kennebec home Nov. 25, 1930 at age 86. She was born Sarah Elizabeth Rice in Whitesville, NY May 6, 1844.    More.

    Mr. Stephen Myers and Miss Irene Wolfe were married last Monday in Presho by Father Frie.

    The infant son of Mr. and Mrs. L.L. Walker, born Sunday afternoon died Sunday evening.

Nov. 30, 1950

    Loyson G. Troth, Iona, a resident of South Dakota and this territory most of his life, passed away Friday, Nov. 17 at age 77. He was born at Hampton, la, April 24, 1873.  More.

    Miss Margie Herman became the bride of Norman Dominiack on Saturday, Nov. 18th at the Zion Lutheran Church in Chamberlain.

     Mr. and Mrs. Wendell Gilman of Kennebec are the proud parents of' an 8 lb. baby girl, Wendy Sue, born Sunday, Nov. 26, at the Murdo hospital.

Dec. 1, 1960

    Charles J. McManus, fireman apprentice, US Navy, son of Mr. , and Mrs. Lyle  cManus of Lyman, departed Boston, Mass. Oct. 18 on the icebreaker-USS Glacier for a six-month cruise to Antarctica.

July 9, 1942

    Elmer Louis LaRoche, a Lyman county citizen from Lower Brule, was included among those who were enlisted in the navy at Omaha. Neb. on July 4, at the Independence Day mass enlistment ceremony; according to J.D. Sandling, Recruiter at the Mitchell Navy Recruiting Station.  LaRoche signed up to fight for his country for the duration of the war as a member of the Naval Reserve. He was enlisted with the rating of Carpenter's Mate, Third Class, a petty officer rating. He enlisted through the Mitchell station.

July 7, 1932

    Cecil Evers came down the street early this morning with a smile on his face that would

make the populace believe he had fallen heir to a million dollars. He was almost  un-approachable. When we got him stopped long enough to ask what it was all about he in-formed us that a bright little girl had come to his house shortly after midnight. Then we knew and we can't blame him. Mother and little one are doing fine, but Uncle Bob Peyton is not feeling  so fine. He said they had kept him awake most of the night and he was too

sleepy to even read a good detective story.

June 22, 1922

    Ray E. Scott of Long Beach, Calif. and ..Miss Gertrude Maves of Presho were married June 23 at Presho.

   J.H, Hamiel, formerly of Reliance, and Stella ArIine Myers were married June 26 in

Des Moines, Iowa.

Jan. 29, 1976

     Kenneth Dorman died :Monday as the result of injuries sustained in a traffic accident

about 1:40 p.m. Monday six miles east of the 1-90 and Highway 81 junction at Salem.

He was out of his vehicle, apparently attempting to help with a stalled vehicle ahead of

him when he was struck. A member of the McCook County Sheriffs office said "about six or

seven vehicles" were involved in the chain reaction. Dorman's was the second in line, it was reported.  Ground blizzards were causing "about zero visibility" and there was packed snow and drifting conditions. A Sioux Falls highway patrolman conducted the  invest-igation with help from the sheriff’s office. The victim was taken to a Mitchell hospital, but was reported dead on arrival. One other person was hospitalized as a result of the  accident. He was employed at Peavy Lumber Service in Chamberlain.

March 31, 1921

    Marie Anderson, daughter of Carl Anderson, a ranchman, living near Draper, was shot and killed at the home of her grandmother, Mrs. Miller, in Sioux City last Friday morn-ing. The love-crazed man, Joseph Wilmer, also of Draper, committed suicide by the girl's

side. Friday afternoon the Sioux City police received a  letter showing that the deed was fully planned before Wilmer left Draper Thursday evening.

July 21, 1977

    Mr. and Mrs. Burton Mills were honored on their 30th wedding anniversary at the United

Church of Christ in Chamberlain on July 17. (more)

    Mr. and Mrs. Rod Diedrich of Presho are parents to a son, born July 8 at the Chamberlain hospital.

    Funeral services for Theodore M. McCauley, 64, Lower Brule were held July 14 in  Kimball. He died July 11 at Community Bailey Hospital in Chamberlain as the result of a heart attack. (more)

     Sgt. Benjamin A. Brinker, son of Mrs. Mary Brinker of Lebanon, S.D., now stationed at
Gunter Field, Montgomery; Ala. and Ellen Elizabeth Glass, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Glass of Kennebec were married June 20 in Montgomery, Ala. (more)
     Neighbors and friends were sorry to hear of the death of Mary Hall of Reliance, July 11 at her home. She was an old-time resident in Lyman County.  She had spent the past few years in Reliance when work on the farm become too much for her.

     Funeral services for the late Mrs. Florence Shaffer were held at Oacoma last Saturday afternoon and was attended by several Kennebec people who knew her. (more)
     C. M. Lockwool, Chamberlain, last man of the famous Last Man's Club, a Civil War organization,  was on his way Monday to Stillwater, Minn. where he will honor the memory of his former comrades on July 21.(more)

     Sherie C. Thomas, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Leon Thomas of Kennebec and Phillip Hall Sr., Spirit Lake, Iowa, were married June 17 in Spirit Lake. (More)

     The sudden and unexpected death of Mrs. Paul Tracy at a hospital in Sioux Falls Saturday morning was a shock to many Kennebec people. A daughter was born to her on Wednesday and it was thought the mother was getting along nicely. However, compli-cations arose on Thursday which continued to be more alarming until death claimed its victim. Mrs. Tracy made her home in. and around Kennebec for many years and spent most of her summer vacation with her father, who was Lyman county States Attorney.

     Mr. and Mrs. W.W. Lloyd were called upon this week to mourn the loss of their infant daughter, Zola Marie, death being due to whooping cough and pneumonia after a three week illness. She was born May 12 and died July 25.

     Howard E. Kesselring, who had lived at Chamberlain since 1935 died Friday at Community Bailey hospital. He served during WW II in the Army Air Force, then working for Wise Bottle Gas and then for the City of Chamberlain in the street
department until retiring in 1974 because of ill health. (more)

     Lorene Healy and Vincent Moeller were married July 16 in Chamberlain. Parents are
Martin Healy; Los Angeles, Calif. and Mrs. Peggy Healy of Chamberlain and Mr. and Mrs.

     Funeral services for Kip D. Larson, 3 months, Lower Brule were held July 20 in Lower Brule. His parents are Donald and Janice Larson. (more)

     Funeral services were held July 16 for Michael Steinfeld, 8-month-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Jim Steinfeld of Mitchell, who died Sunday afternoon after a two-week illness. The Steinfelds recently moved to Mitchell from Kennebec.

     F.W. Behrns, early resident of Bijou Hills, passed away July 13 at the home of his daughter near Shelby. (More)

     Sam Peterson of Murdo died Monday from injuries received in a car accident Friday when his car struck a cement bridge a mile and a half east of Presho. Loose gravel is reported to have caused the driver to lose control of his car.

Last Friday, July 15, almost 24 hours after the accident in which he was severely burned when a can of wood alcohol exploded, Marvin Powers of Pukwana, passed away. He was generating a blow torch with wood alcohol when fumes from the can exploded. (More)

Aug. 3, 1922

     Wellington Rickert, a farmer of Lyon township this county, had the unusual experience of being pinned under a cupboard for two days. Mr. Rickerts explained that he was ill Thursday evening. He had a fainting spell and fell to the floor in the kitchen. Upon recovering, he was able to rise and took hold of a cupboard to pull himself up. The cupboard tipped over on top of him.
Aug. 25, 1977
     Franklin Parks, 70, of Presho died August 17 at his home of a heart attack. Funeral services were held Saturday at the United Methodist Church. He served as Lyman County Sheriff for eight years and was a member of the Presho City Council (more).
     Lyle Mortenson, Kennebec, left August 13 for Germany where he will teach the 6th grade the coming school term.
     Funeral services for Gertrude Benjamin, 47, San Jose, California were held in Sioux
City August 11. She was born south of Kennebec.
Aug. 24, 1922
     Clifford Halvorson, 16 year old son, of Mr: and Mrs. Enoch Halvorson was badly burned by the explosion of a gasoline torch Tuesday afternoon.
     Miss Margaret Moran and Mr. Laurel Walker, both of Lyman County; married August 22 in St. Michael's Church in Kennebec. (more).
    A barn and shed on the Ed Eleeson farm was burned Wednesday afternoon. Cause is
unknown but supposed to be spontaneous combustion.
     Monroe, little son of Mr. and  Mrs. L. Martin of Cooper Township got ahold of a Daisy
Fly Killer one day last week and tried to drink the water from it. It is not known just how much he got, but first aid was given him and then he was taken to Reliance. The poison burnt his mouth and lips, but did no more harm.
Aug. 6, 1942

    Ralph Bovey; one of 23 men from Lyman County inducted March 15, died July 27. His death is the first one in Kennebec in WWII.  (more).
Aug. 4, 1932

    Ed Lippens, a farmer near Reliance met with a serious accident Monday morning. He was operating a mower 'n the field when his team became frightened and ran away.  Mr: Lippens
was thrown from his seat and fell in front of the sickle. Both fore arms were badly lacerated. The right arm (was so seriously lacerated that it may be necessary to amputate the arm at the elbow.
    Lester Gabrielson, 12, son of Mr. land Mrs. Gabe Gabrielson, who resides south of Kimball, accidentally shooting himself in the chest with a supposedly empty pistol which contained a blank cartridge. He placed the pistol against his chest as his brother related a gun story; The paper wad in the cartridge penetrated his chest adept of 2 inches, and the powder caused severe burns. Doctors assert that the danger of poisoning is over.

    Mr. and Mrs. Paul Stockstad of Reliance had a 8 lb. son Sunday afternoon.
    Little Miss Cora Gensler, Lower Brule, was bitten by a poisonous snake on Saturday afternoon. She appears to be making rapid recovery

    R R. Irons, former resident of Chamberlain and a frequent visitor of Reliance died Saturday
evening of a sudden heart failure.

Aug. 31, 1922

    Teofil Sneigocki, the popular garage man at Iona was united in marriage to Miss Jessie Williams
of Dubuque, Iowa. Miss Williams taught in the Iona school last year.
    Donald Sinclair MacKay; son of Mr. and Mrs. R. S. MacKay, died on Friday of acute appendicitis at a hospital in his home city; Sioux Falls. Donald was born and spent thirteen years of his life in Oacoma. He was almost seventeen years old when he died.

    Roland Eugene "Dude" Lux, 30, died Saturday at his home in Oacoma. His funeral was Tuesday at Chamberlain. He had lived in Reliance as a boy; and was a commercial fisherman.
Sept. 10, 1942
    Edwin Deiss, 13-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. George Deiss, residing five miles southwest of town died in a silo. When he was found he was lying under a pile of silage. (More)

    It is reported that Mr. and Mrs. Paul Robertson, Iona are the parents of twin boys who made their arrival the first of the week.
    Mr: and Mrs. Ray Davis welcomed the arrival of a new baby daughter last Monday afternoon.
    Arthur Lien, young farmer living west of Kennebec met with an accident Thursday morning while threshing. A motorcycle frightened his team and in an effort to stop them he was hit in the face with the tongue of the wagon, and it is not known yet if his jaw was broken or not.

    The flag in Lower Brule was half-masted in honor of Mr. Day Boy who had been a soldier in the regular army.

Oct. 6, 1977

    Word was received that Mrs. John Nation had passed away Friday morning. They are residents of Black Hawk.

The family were former Kennebec residents several years ago.

Sept. 29, 1932

    Mrs. Lynn Walker died Saturday; Sept. 24 in Chadron, Neb. She had underwent a gall stone operation and was

thought to be coming through it, though. Her funeral was Sept. 27. She was from the Gregory area and was

buried by her daughter in Iona. (More)

Sept. 28, 1922

     A.H. Shaffer has taken the subcontract to carry the mail from Oacoma to  Iona.

    Mr: and Mrs. Fred Faber will open a restaurant in the building north of Leydens pool hall, owned by Harry

Dixson.The building has been remodeled and hooked to the sewer.

Sept. 24, 1942

     After many years of ill health and a serious illness of several weeks, Mrs. Henry C. Lindley passed away quietly

at her home near Reliance on Sunday afternoon. (More)

Sept. 22, 1932

     Mrs. J.E. Van Auken, died quite suddenly at the hospital in Mitchell late Tuesday afternoon. Her remains were

taken to South English, Iowa where burial was made. Two children survive, Mrs. Lizzie Fuson and Wilford, both

of Kennebec.

Sept. 21, 1922

     The section men met with an accident Tuesday when their electric hand car jumped the track throwing them

off and injuring Chris Westergaard and George Orberson.

     Presho went near having another fire loss Monday afternoon. At 12:15 the fire whistle blew and the fire was

found to be in the Don Hopkins' residence. The fire originated in an upstairs room and was not discovered until

it had burnt through the roof. Not a great deal of water was required as the chemicals did good work. The cause

has not been determined.

     M. Traville, an employee of the Presho Herald, last week purchased the  Prairie Sun from Mrs. Bertha

Williamson proprietor and will enter the newspaper field. (More)

     Frank Flannigan has moved his stock of groceries into the Chas. Lafferty building just west of the Post Office.

Aug. 20, 1942

     Miss Mary Strom, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Halvor Strom, Vivian became the bride of Sgt.Orville Tatge of

Minn. Saturday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock. Sgt. Tatge is an  assistant in surgery in the medical Corps at Camp

Cooke, Ill.. (more)

     Miss Frances McMasters, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Price McMasters, Kennebec married N.C: Cline, son of

Mr. and Mrs: C. Cline of Billings, Mont. on Aug. 3 (more)

     Mr. and Mrs. Walter celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary last Saturday evening. (more)

     Mr. and Mrs. Fred Rohrback are proud parents of a seven pound baby girl born Tuesday morning at their home.

     North Dakota will have no license plates for automobiles next year. To conserve metals used in plates, it will

issue windshield stickers and save about $23,000.

Aug. 17, 1922

     Al Henneman and wife are the 'proud parents of a new baby girl.

     Miss Ida Thompson, died Aug. 3 in the Methodist State Hospital following an operation of appendicitis.

     Daniel Rigney died Aug. 5 at his home north of Kennebec after years of suffering with tuberculosis.

     Mrs. D.E. Chamberlain, of Kennebec died Aug. 6 of heart failure in Rapid  City

Sept. 29, 1977

     Mr. and Mrs. E. H. "Hans" Wagner will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary Oct. 3. They are former

residents of Kennebec and Reliance and were known for playing at many dances, including wedding dances.

Oct. 1, 1942

     The effects of the war is gradually coming closer to home and from time to time each community will hear of

casualties. This week Kennebec received word from the War Department of the missing of Kenneth Lien. He was

on a ship, evidently going out to sea. The ship was long overdue and the War Department notified Mr. and  Mrs.

Marcus Lien that their son was on that ship.

Sept. 29, 1932

     The remains of Mrs. J. E. Van Auken, who died at the hospital in Mitchell  last week were taken to South

English, Iowa for burial with her remains laid to rest 'beside those of her husband who passed away about a year

ago. Her family moved to Kennebec in 1907 and they have resided at Chamberlain ever since. (More)

     Leonard McLaughlin, a young farmer residing northwest of Kennebec was fatally injured late Saturday

afternoon when a shotgun accidentally discharged and sent the full charge into his abdomen, and almost

disemboweled the victim. He had just completed combining his small grain crop. On driving into the farmyard

he took the shotgun he  had carried with him and threw it to one side near the water tank. Somehow it

discharged with fatal results. He died Sunday morning and his funeral was held in Presho.

Sept. 28, 1922

     Mr. and Mrs. Tom Merritt are the proud parents of a baby girl born Monday.

     William Blum died in Oacoma Sept. 20. He lived at White Lake in 1883 and later moved to the Oacoma area. (More)

     A baby girl was born Friday to Mr. and Mrs. Frank Gammon of Reliance.
