The H. D. Baker family moved to Summit Township from Canning in the spring of 1935. They bought the old Howard place, which was the location of a post office, Marston, in the early days of settlement. Herb and Edith were the parents of two children. They had a rather unique record of having five sons, namely Crayton, Winnie, Darrold, Wayne and John, serve in the U. S. Armed Forces during World War II. All returned safely. John was injured, but recovered well. Alice, John, Crayton, Darrold and Ruth (known as Susie) live in Washington state. Gertrude Jackson and Winfield (Winnie)live in Pierre; Wayne is in Fort Pierre; Floyd (Toy) lives Rapid City; Verna is in Missouri, and Donald lives in Nebraska. Mrs. Baker passed away in 1953 and H. D. in 1964. Winfield Baker and wife,Ruth, lived on the place for several years. They had four sons. The family left Summit in about 1957. Glenn married Rose Starkey of DeGrey. After a number years spent living elsewhere, Rose and Glenn moved onto the Baker farm, which they had bought, in 1959, and lived there until 1978, when they bought a house in Onida on the corner just east of Erp's service station. Glenn passed away in June, 1982. Rose continues to live there. Dick Baker, a son of Floyd and Betty Baker, spent much of his time as a child and youth with his uncle, Glenn Baker, and wife, Rose. After leaving the service, he returned to Summit Township and subsequently married Joan Parks. They have three sons and one daughter and live on Rose's place.
