Bethel  Reformed  Church  Cemetery

 A Bit of History of the Bethel Reformed Church Cemetery - Davis, SD   

Even before there was a town of Davis there were meetings of community members and a country Episcopalian church was built
as early as 1871 in the Turner Hill area  that was soon moved to Hurley.  Area meetings continued to be held including the
Episcopalians, Methodists, United Brethren and Reformed.  By 1891 the Reformed members were intent to form a congregation
and build a church.   The group was finally organized in 1894, and a church building was erected in 1899.  The present church
building was built in 1951 and dedicated in 1952.

The first cemetery in the area was formed on Turner Hill when Father Turner died and was buried there.  Ten years later Father
Turners remains were moved to Hurley.  Henry Davis, the father of Jackson Davis, the founder of the town of Davis, had planned
to be buried in a special burial plot in what was to become Davis, but when Henry died in 1881 it was all under flood water so he
was buried in Hurley as well leaving Davis without a cemetery at that time.  When Jackson Davis, the founder of Davis died he
followed the precedent of his family and so the founder of Davis is buried in Hurley.

Land for the Bethel Cemetery was purchased in 1899 from Ubbe Johnson at the same time the adjacent St. Anthony Cemetery
was created.  These two cemeteries have since served the community in excellent fashion although as can be expected some folks
choose to be interred in other nearby cemeteries.
