Frieling
Cemetery - Viborg, SD.
Section 15 - Turner Township - Turner County - South Dakota
|
The Frieling Cemetery was
a family cemetery and one which has survived, but has had periods of
complete neglect. The available list of burials is not official and
no formal records were kept. The cemetery was established by John H
Frieling in 1895 following the death of his first child. Its
last known use was in 1925 following the death of another child. A
steel fence surrounds the Frieling graves.
This private cemetery has survived partially from the efforts of Tiena
Norman who served as caretaker for many years. She was likely a
child of Oliver and Christina Norman, or is Tiena a nickname for
Christina? When Tiena was unable to continue the Cemetery quickly fell into ruin.

The Frieling Family Cemetery information database consists of 3 parts.
This information was prepared by Ken Tiahrt (tiahrt@montana.edu) with the generous assistance of
Sherree Schmiedt who provided unofficial burial records, and may be freely copied by individuals and non-profit organizations for their private use.
Special thanks is given to Charlotte Hoyt for taking the photographs. Any other use,
including publication, storage in a retrieval system, or transmission by electronic, mechanical, or other means requires
written approval.
1. A Cemetery Map
A map of the cemetery is not provided because there are only three grave
monuments still in the cemetery. 2. A List of
Burials
A listing of the burials at Frieling Cemetery – Section 15 – Turner Township – Turner County, gives the individual names. This listing also gives the date of birth and date of death when
available. While specific grave sites are given, no official cemetery
record book was kept. 3. Photos of
Grave Monuments
Each photo is matched to the individual listed on a given line entry.
Because there is no official cemetery book available the lot number and the
grave number are not assured to be correct. The accuracy
available with the records in this document is acceptable for most
genealogical purposes. Use your browser return
icon to exit from a photo and go back to this page.

While grave marker #48 in the Frieling Cemetery has the lettering "J J Frieling"
on its base, it is obvious he moved to
Montana, there is no record if he is buried in Turner County. Grave marker
#44 does have "J H Frieling" on its base.
The list of Frieling names which follows were in the 1910 US Census for
