Submitter: Barbara Shay (BShayann@aol.com)
Date: 19 Aug 1999

I am attempting to find the marriage records of Joseph Chaille and Julia Limoges. Joseph was born in 1833 in Canada and came to this area sometime later. He settled at Sioux Point landing and homesteaded there. He was a fur trader and married Julia Limoges. No record of the marriage can be found as there were no churches here until around 1860. Buriel records and baptismal records are found in either Jefferson or Sioux City. I am unable to locate the marriage records for this area in the 1830's. Any help would be appreciated.

NELSON/NEILSEN/PEDERSEN/PETERSEN: Anna Christina Petersen married James(Jens) Neilsen/Nelson on May 27, 1883 and moved to a small farm at the west edge of Beresford. James Nelson's father, Niels Jensen and Niels Jensen's sister Mary Jensen lived with James and Anna for a short time. Anna had an older brother named Andrew Peter (Andreas Peder?). It is guessed that Anna Christina's step-father settled in Union Co. His name is guessed to be Soren Larsen and her mother is Steine ?. Anna also had a half brother named Lars U. Larsen born Oct. 4, 1864 and died Mar. 4, 1914. Lars married Anna K. ? who died Feb. 3, 1953. All of them are buried in St. Peter's Cemetary in Beresford..although they were all Lutheran. Any help with the pedigree of Anna Christina's family..especially Soren Larsen and wife Steine or her half-brother Lars U. Larsen would be immensely appreciated. The family of James Nelson and Anna are in the Beresford book but no mention is made of Anna's background..unfortunately. Please contact lbowles@pe.net if you have any information. Thank you very much. Larry Bowles

Surnames: CARTER BROWER
Submitter: Don Casey (n8v@aol.com)
Date: 25 Jul 1999

Looking for any information on my grandmother, Carolyn (or Caroline) Leona Carter (better know as Carrie Carter, born on the Rosebud Reservation Nov 6, 1881. I have photes which indicate indian blood (family tradition says 100%)or mixed indian blood. She may be connected to Oscar M. Carter, and Cinderella Carter a trader and his wife who lived on Rosebud in 1880. Relatives claim her native name was "Redwing" (not the native American actress). Her white (perhaps adoptive) father was James Edward Carter of Elk Point, Union County, South Dakota. She married Erastus L. Brower, my grandfather, and moved to Sioux City. My family has always honored and taken pride in our Lakhota heritage. We would like to confirm and find evidence of it. I've located many Redwing families on the old indian census rolls of the Santee Sioux Reservation in the 1800s, and most of the children of Oscar Carter were all born in Nebraska so there may be a connection. Any help you can give will be greatly appreciated. Don Casey

On the following web page: http://secondwi.com/calvin_brooks.htm are many letters written by Calvin M. Brooks, b. 9 Sept 1835, from the battles of the Civil War to his sister, who was my g-grandmother. I have all of the original letters. He was the first one to join his Second Wisconsin company...information on that is at the same address. He was also one of the few to return. No officer returned and 85% of the men were killed. He was in the worst battles of the war. Calvin was given a federal land grant after finishing his 3 year enlistment and being wounded at Gettysburg. He was among the first settlers to come to Union County, arriving in 1864. In the list of the Union Co. early homesteaders is found: "Brooks, Calvin M. Section 21; Township 95N; Rage 48W; Township: Alcester" I have nothing further on him. He can be found at my URL on the Fowler Genealogy subpage. I would appreciate any information that can be provided me. Regards, John Wayland
