1890 Veterans Census©
of Harlan County Kentucky

originally published in Harlan Footprints Volume I, Number 3

This census was in places very difficult to decipher but the biggest difficulty was that it is a two-section schedule. The top section lists the name, rank, unit of service and dates with the bottom section having corresponding numbers for listing the veterans post office and disability. It appears that these did not necessarily correspond with the numbered name at the top. Some listings have more individuals on the top section than on the bottom section. The best attempt has been made at correctly matching these two sections but if in doubt or difficulty, please check the original. Information from the bottom section has been shown in italics. This census was to contain Union veterans only but sometimes a Confederate will be listed and then usually noted as Confederate. There is at least one such on the Harlan lists. If a name appears in blue, it is linked to an annotation with additional information from other sources. If you can contribute information about any of these listed, please email me at htimm@comcast.net.

HERE ENDS THE 1890 UNION VETERANS CENSUS

(1) BAT appears in most instances to refer to the Three Forks Battalion, a State Guard Unit which was not eligible for a federal pension but some may have received state pensions. It is worth seeking federal pension information because some applied and were denied as their service was only for the state. Many who served in the state battalions also served in federal units afterwards. [use your back button on your browser to return to where you were in the list]

Calvin Pace served in Company D of the 49th Kentucky Infantry

Jefferson Burkhart served in Co F of the 47th Kentucky Infantry, listed in the roster book as age 28 at enlistment, 5' 10" tall, fair complexion, blue eyes, light hair, born Harlan County, he enrolled 1 Oct 1863 and deserted from Camp Paris 1 May 1864, returned to his command 7 Jun 1864, no forfeiture.
