William E. Call ran the Gristmill at the head of the river in
Smithtown (south of the railroad bridge). He lived on the north side
of Jericho Turnpike in Smithtown village.
[23]
Obituary of William E. Call, taken from newspaper clipping, source
unknown, probably the Brooklyn Daily Eagle, 10 July 1906.
Smithtown Branch, July 10. William E. Call, one of the oldest
residents of Smithtown, passed away at his home in this village,
Sunday evening at 7 O'clock, after a brief illness of dropsical and
heart trouble. Mr Call was born at Riverhead in 1821, and came to
Smithtown at the age of sixteen, and with his father ran the mill at
the Head-of the River until in later life he bought the farm where he
last resided. In 1845 he married Miss Samantha Caonklin. Nine
children were born to them, two dying in infantcy, seven are still
living- Charles W., George E., Frank, Mrs. Edward Brown, Mrs. John
Tyler, Mrs. George Strong, and Mrs. Whitford J. Lee. He also leaves
neneteen grandchildren and nine great grandchildren, and one sister,
the last of the Call family - Mrs. Mary Hand.
[25]
This is the text of an article from the Brooklyn Daily Eagle on April
22, 1905 titled "Mr. and Mrs. W.E. Call SIXTY YEARS MARRIED".
------ "They are celebrating the interesting event in Smithtown
today." ---- "Nine children have been born to them, among the number
Frank H. Call, of Bayshore - Both the celebrants are in excellent
health - Social Festivities."
"Smithtown, April 22. - Mr. and Mrs. E. Call, well-known residents of
this place, are to-day informally celebrating the sixtieth anniversary
of their marriage, which occured in this village on April 22, 1845. In
spite of their advanced years both are exceptionally well preserved,
both physically and mentally and their four-score years apparently
rest very lightly upon them. Mr. Call, who is a native of Riverhead ,
was born on November 24, 1821, while Mrs. Call, formerly Miss Samantha
Conklin and a member of the well known Conklin family of Smithtown,
was born in the latter village on January 18, 1924.
Mr. Call is a miller by trade and served his apprenticeship at
Riverhead. He later for several decades followed that avocation at
Smithtown, where he conducted a large milling business, and has also
pursued the occupation of a farmer. A Republican iin politics as are
all of his sons, with the exception of Frank H., who resides at
Bayshore, he has never sought or held office, preferring the life of
a private citizen to that of an office holder.
Nine children have been born to Mr. and Mrs. Call. They are:
Elizabeth and Matilda, who died in infancy. Charles W. and George
Call, of Northport. The latter Post-master of that village. Mrs.
Anna Brown, wife of Edward Brown, of Riverhead: Mrs. Emma J., wife of
John Tyler, and Mrs. Ada B. Strong, wife of George Strong, of
Smithtown; Mrs. Lizzie M. Lee, wife of Whitford Lee, of Brooklyn, and
Frank H. Call, of Bayshore. The last named is Chief Engineer of the
Fire Department in the village, where he has long resided and where he
has for six years past been a town officer. Within the family circle
are nineteen grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
A singular fact in connection with the family history during the past
forty odd years is that one death has occured in the family during
that period, and those were children. (sic)
Hard work and the rearing of a large and thrifty family have not had
any perceptible effect on either Mr. or Mrs. Call, and both enjoy to
the utmost the good health and temporal prosperity with which they
have been blessed and the evening tide of life finds them looking back
on cheerful yesterdays and ahead to confident tomorrows.
That they will be spared to celebrate many more anniversaries is the
firm wish of their many friends in Smithtown and other parts of the
Island."
