THE PROGENITOR
"JAN ELTINGE, son of ROELIF and AALTJE ELTINGE, was born at
Switchelaer, a dependency of Beyle, situated in the province of
Drenthe, in the year 1632, on the 29th of July, old style and hath
received Christian Baptism at the hands of our Rev. Mr. And Father
in-law Dr. Johannes Beeltsnyder, and was named Jan Eltinge. Born of
honest and virtuous parents who have always sustained a good
reputation among us and whose kindred is still numerous. Whereof, he
having requested our testimony, we have therefore not been able to
refuse the same to him, but have granted him this our certificate in
order that he may avail himself thereof according to circumstances.

In 1974 a bus tour sponsored by the Huguenot Historical Society drove
through Beilen (Beyle) a very small rural village near Meppel. There
was a serious language barrier, but we did learn that there were still
ELTENS in the area. This has not been pursued.
By 1663, Jan was living in Flatbush and working as a capenter on the
church there. By 1677 he was in Ulster County and had married
JACOMYNTJE SLECHT, dau. of CORNELIUS BARENTSEN SLECHT and TRYNTJE
TYSEN BOS. She was the widow of CORNELIS BARENTS KUNST and then GERRIT
FOOCHEN. Jan was witness to the Indian Deed of New Paltz lands dated
Sept. 15, 1677. In 1686 he was partner in the Arie Roosa Patent for
1500 acres in Dutchess County along the Hudson opposite Kingston. This
land was purchased from his heirs in 1713 by Gerrit Aertsen. No will
has been found for either Jan or Jacomyntje.
