FAQ: SURNAMES-* lists linked to soc.genealogy.surnames.*

Welcome to the SURNAMES-* mailing lists hosted at rootsweb.com.  Each of these 
lists is linked to one of the soc.genealogy.surnames.* newsgroups.  Each 
mailing list gets all the queries posted to the associated newgroup, and vice-
versa. The lists are:

The main list is in digest mode; subscribers receive queries bundled into 
digests, with each digest containing about 20 queries.  Index mode subscribers 
receive a daily index of posts to the list, with directions on ordering the 
complete text of messages that look interesting.  Mail mode subscribers 
receive each query as a separate e-mail; because of the higher cost of 
processing a large number of messages, mail mode subscriptions are currently 
available only to subscribers and sponsors of Rootsweb.

How to Subscribe and Unsubscribe
--------------------------------

To subscribe to any of the lists, send mail to
<listname>-request@rootsweb.com, substituting the name of the list instead
of <listname>.  Write just the single word "subscribe" in the body of the 
message. That's all.  For example, to subscribe to SURNAMES-IRELAND (in the 
digest mode), send a message that looks like:

From: yourname@your-isp.com
To: SURNAMES-IRELAND-request@rootsweb.com
Subject:

subscribe

Do not include any additional text or signature.  The Smartlist software is 
picky about .sig lines.

To subscribe to the index mode SURNAMES-GERMAN-I, send the same message to 
SURNAMES-GERMAN-I-request@rootsweb.com.  Note that mail mode subscriptions are 
available only to rootsweb sponsors; for information on becoming a sponsor
