King deposed by the parliament. His half-brother Johan (1537-92) takes over. |
| 1570 | Peace treaty of Stettin | Peace with Denmark after Nordiska sjuårskriget. Älvsborgs
första lösen - the ransom paid to the Danes to retrieve the
fortress Elfsborg - near Göteborg city. Start of war against Russia (until -92). |
| King Johan III is a Catholic and tries to introduce Catholic reformist practices to the Swedish Evangelical church. | ||
| 1577 | King Erik XIV dies | Imprisoned by his 1/2-brother, king Johan III. Maybe poisoned. |

| 1593 | Uppsala möte King Sigismund coronation |
After king Johan III:s death a church meeting in Uppsala confirms that
Sweden is Lutheran-Evangelical. King Sigismund (Catholic, son of Johan
III) crowned after being forced to accept the church's decision. Sigismund is also king of Poland and lives there enabling Duke Karl (1550-1611), protestant, brother of Johan III in the position of riksråd ("governor" of Sweden) to gradually take power. |
| 1598 | Battle of Stångebro | King Sigismund returns to Sweden with a Polish army but is defeated at Stångebro by duke Karl |
| 1604 | King Karl IX elected king | Confirmation of duke Karl's take-over but Poland and Sigismund still opposes until 1660. Elected by parliament but not recognized by several other countries from fear of the powerful Poland and its king Sigismund. |
| 1611 | King Karl IX dies | His son Gustaf II Adolf (1594-1632) takes over. Inherits ongoing wars against Poland, Russia and Denmark. |
| 1611-13 | Kalmarkriget | War against Denmark. Fortress Älvsborg (near Göteborg city) again captured by Danes. |
| 1613 | Peace treaty of Knäred | Peache with Denmark. Sweden must pay Denmark to get Älvsborg back Älvsborgs andra lösen. |
| 1617 | Peace treaty of Stolbova | after the 1609-17 war against Russia. |
| 1618 | 30-year War starts | in N Germany. Several small countries fight Catholics against Protestants but Sweden is not yet involved. |
| 1629 | Cease-fire at Altmark | Cease-fire after the 1609-29 war against Poland, largely fought in the Baltic States which were Polish territory at the time. Gustaf II Adolf fought successfully, acquiring Estonia and 1/2 of Latvia, which remain Swedish territory for almost 100 years. |
| 1632 | King Gustaf II Adolf dies | killed Nov 6 at Lützen in 30-year War. His daughter Kristina (1626-89) takes over. |
| Kristina abdicates | Queen Kristina converts to Catholicism and must abdicate. Moves to Rome, Italy. | |
| 1700 | Stora Nordiska kriget | The great Nordic war 1700-21. Denmark, Poland and Russia set out to quench the Swedish dominating position in the Baltic Sea region and they succeed. |
| 1718 | King Karl XII dies | Killed at Fredriksten fortress in Norway in the war against Norway. |
| 1809 | Lost Finland | Sweden cedes Finland to Russia after a war 1808-9. |
| 1814 | Union with Norway. | Last war for Sweden. Now a very short campaign to secure the union with Norway decided in the peace treaty after the Napoleonic war in Europe. |
| 1905 | Unionsupplösningen | Union with Norway peacefully dissolved. |
