Filipstad city Known since 14th century as trading and mining place. City privileges in 1611, named after Prince Karl Filip, son of King Karl IX. Several large fires, last in 1775. Birth place of engineer and inventor John Ericsson and poet Nils Ferlin.
Mining centre. Sweden's only special school for mining engineers (founded in 1830). Wasabröd (bakers of "knäckebröd"). Railway station on Inlandsbanan.
