If you have hit the "brick wall" in tracing your line, check out these variant spellings. I have positively identified about half of them as having documents recorded with the variant, when the person referred to in the document was a Hamm_ck. (I get mail to me with many of the spellings. Think what it was like when there was no standardized spelling and few could read and write.)
Check for the variant spellings. Also remember that many counties had other names originally and in some cases, the same plot of land has been in several different counties.
