Mrs.Veatta Leinart Barnitz,44 of Lake City Rt.1 died Friday,at 5:30 p.m.at
St.Mary's Hospital. She was a member of Clear Branch Baptist Church,where
services were held Sunday at 2p.m. with the Rev.H.L. Hutchins and the Rev.Ernest
Goins officiating.Burial was in Leach Cemetery. Survivors include her
husband,Deadrick Barnitz,three daughters,Mrs.Linda Smith, Diane and Judy
Barnitz, parents,Mr.and Mrs.R.C.Leinart all of Lake City Rt.1.three

P.F. Bass Retired Coal Miner,Dies Porter
Fillmore(Fill)Bass,75,a retired coal miner,died Friday at his home on Dutch
Valley Rd.at Oliver Springs Rt.2. He has been ill for several years.since
suffering a stroke.A native of Kentucky,he had lived in East Tennessee since a
small boy.He worked as a miner in several areas,for the longest
period at
Westbourne in Campbell County. He was a member of Mineral Springs Baptist
Church,where services were held Sunday at 2p.m.with the Rev.Hayes Bass and the
Rev.Clyde Kidwell officiating.Burial was in Hoskins Cemetery.He leaves his
wife,Mrs.Pasty D.Bass,two daughters, Mrs.Mary Gardner of Cocoa Beach,Fla.and
Mrs.Elvin Lively of Oliver Springs,six brothers,Paul,Clyde,and Elgin Bass all of

John David Baxter Jr.,55,of Andersonville died
Saturday night in Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center.
Mr.Baxter,a veteran
of the Army,was a member of Temple Baptist Church in Powell.He was employee
of
the Knoxville News-Sentinel and former employee of Dempster Brothers,with
28 years service.
Survivors include his wife,Delores Seiber Baxter,son and
daughter-in-law,John and Mary Lou Baxter
of Irving,Texas.,father-in-law and
mother-in-law,Fred and Leora Seiber,brother,Robert Baxter of
Knoxville,

Ex-Cook At Lake City School Dies Funeral servcies
for former cook at Lake City Elementary School,Mrs.Berlena Beach,82,of 1013
Grace Avenue, Lake City,were held Friday at Willow Brook Baptist Church.She died
of heart failure May 20 at Oak Ridge Hospital.She had been sick about one month
and had been in the hospital five days.Mrs.Beach,a native of the Briceville and
Lake City area,was a cook at the school in 1940s.She was diabetic and was
wheelchair- bound for 13 years.Mrs.Beach enjoyed quilting and was a member of
Willow Brook Baptist Church. She is survived by her ex-husband,Franklin Beach of
Briceville,two sons,James D.Beach of Briceville,

Beach,Miner For 42 years,Dies
A Briceville
native who was a coal miner for 42 years,Charles Franklin Beach 81,died last
Thursday at Oak Ridge Hospital. Beach was a member of Laurel Branch Baptist
Church and enjoyed fishing and hunting when he was
younger. He is survived by
his wife,Lola McOwen Beach,two sons,J.D.Beach of Lake City and Eugene of Chula
Vista,Calif. three daughters,Mrs.Lonnie(Naomi)Duff of
Clinton,Mrs.George(Imogene)Elliott of Andersonville,and Mrs.Lillie Health of
Dalton,Ga.,22 grandchildren,32 great-grandchildren,and three sisters,Katherine,
Elsie and Cora,all of Kentucky. Funeral services were held Sunday at
MartinFuneral Home in Lake City with the Rev.Edwin Phillips officiating. Burial
was in Leach Cemetery.

Ronnie H. Beck Former K-25 worker
Ronnie H. Beck, 54, of Knoxville, died Tuesday, Aug. 10, 1999, at Fort
Sanders Parkwest Medical Center in Knoxville.Mr. Beck was employed for 11 years
at the Oak Ridge K-25 Site before beginning his own business, Beck's Heating
& Air.He was a member of Everett Road Baptist Church in Knoxville. His
family described him as a beloved husband and father and as a great humanitarian
who was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need.Mr. Beck is
survived by his wife, Linda Beck; three sons, Jason Michael Beck and his wife,
Melissa Landis, William Eric Beck and his wife, April, and Rodney Brandon
Landis, all of Knoxville; two daughters,
Brenda Beck and Rhonda Beck, both of
Alaska; and his mother, Mae Fritts of Oak Ridge.He is also survived by five
grandchildren, Amber, Rhea, Tyanna, Corey and Devin; and two sisters, Sharon
Presley of Oak Ridge and Carol Pierce and her husband, Frank, of Knoxville.The
funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 14, in the chapel of Highland
West Funeral Home, 9913 Sherrill Lane, Knoxville. The Rev. Glenn Gregg will
officiate.
In accordance with Mr. Beck's wishes, the body is to be
cremated.The family requests that any memorials be in the form of donations to
Everett Road Baptist Church, Everett Road, Knoxville, TN 37932.
The family
will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 13, at the funeral
home.

home in Caryville last Tuesday,June 9. Her death was the result of a four weeks
illness of heart trouble.She is survived by her husband,six children and several

Knoxville, died Saturday, April 10 at St. Mary's Medical Center in Knoxville.
She was preceded in death by parents, Frank and Rosa Bradshaw Bailey. Husband
Michael Jay Bezark of Clinton. Funeral services were held Tuesday, April 13 at
Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Lake City with Rev. Joe Bridges officiating.
Interment followed in Robbins Cemetery in Dutch Valley.

Farmer,Dies Friday.
John E. Bolinger,85,a retired farmer,died Friday in Lake
City Hospital.He had lived in the Lake City Nursing Home for some time.Bolinger
had a small farm in the Medford community,south of Lake City and farmed on a
small scale.Earlier he had worked a a coal miner. He was married to the former
Ocie Seivers. Services were at 4p.m. Sunday at Clinch River Baptist Church,where
he was a member. The Rev.W.H. Beets and the Rev. George Delozier
officiated.Burial was in the church cemetery.Beside his wife,he leaves a
daughter, Mrs.Boyd (Geneva) Webster of Lake City, two sons,Dorcie Bolinger of
Cleveland,O.,and Luther Bolinger of Clinton,27 grandchildren, 54 great-

Andrew Braden,
Coal Operator Passes At
Home
Andrew Braden, 75, father of Mrs. W.O. Duncan of Clinton and
father-in-law of
Mrs. Sue Burress,county trustee, died late Monday night at
his home in the
Braden Flats community,near Briceville.He had been in failing
health for a
considerable time.He was the foundery owner and operator of
Braden Coal
company, the mines of which are near his late residence,being a
part of Windrock coal seam. Surviving are widow,four daughters, Mrs.Oma White of
Knoxville, Mrs. W.O. Duncan of Clinton, Mrs. Condy Disney of
Briceville,Mrs.Ellery Futrell of Harriman,seven sons, J.K.,W.H.,Ernest and Joe
Braden,Briceville, Jesse,Clinton, McKiney and Chandler Braden, Knoxville. There
are 50 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Nearly every son and
son-in-law is identified with the coal mining industry. Mr.Braden was interested
also in education work among the mountain folk, in whose,interests he was
unceasingly active.He ranked high in the profession as
a mining expert and
producer. He was a member of the Baptist church,and was one of the oldest
members of
Briceville Chapter,Royal Arch Masons. One of his
grandchildren,Miss.Billie Elizabeth Braden,is teacher of domestic science in the
Clinton High school.Another grand-daughter,Miss.Frances Braden, was graduated
from U-T at the age of 17 years,making a record for graduation age.She is now a
TVA supervisor.
A tribute was paid to memory of Mr.Braden by George
P.Chandler,of Knoxville,who
said: "He was well and favorably known as a
reliable coal producer and mining man. particulary in the Coal Creek and New
River districts,He was active when coal mines were first developed,and remained
so up to the time of death" Funeral services were to be held this
(Thursday)afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Indian Bluff Baptist church,near his
late residence.Burial was to take place in the church cemetery, services at
grave being in
charge of the Briceville Lodge F (?) A.M with Mr.Chandler,
Past Grand High Priest of the R.A.M. of Tennessee,as leader. Martin of Lake City
was in charge.

Brenda Braden Fatally Injured in Wednesday
Morning Wreck
Tragedy Strikes on Way to Work Brenda Braden, 19, of Lake City,
was fatally injured last Wednesday morning, February 21 when the car she was
driving went out of control and struck a tractor-trailer truck parked in front
of the Green Valley Truck Stop on US 25W, four miles south of Lake City. Miss
Braden, who was Chief Clerk at Sun Finance in Oak Ridge, was on her way to work
when the accident occurred. She was brought to the Lake City Hospital and was
being transferred to Oak Ridge Hospital where she was pronounced dead on arrival
at 9:03 a.m. She lived with her mother, Mrs. Ruth Braden at 408 Creek Street and
had left her home only minutes before the accident. Brenda was a 1966 graduate
of Lake City High School and attended the University of Tennessee. She was a
cheerleader at school and served as captain during her senior year. She was also
Freshman Class Secretary, a member of the Drill Team, FHA, FTA and the Drama
Club. Her church membership was in the Lake City First Baptist Church. She is
survived by her mother, Ruth Brogans Braden; sister, Mrs. Annette Laudermilk of

Clinton Veteran Dies Saturday In Auto
Crash
Charles Braden,22,of Clinton Rt.3.,died Sunday afternoon at St.Mary's
Hospital in Knoxville after
he sustained multiple injuries when his car ran
off Pleasant Ridge Rd.in Knoxville and hit a utility pole. Braden,driving
alone,apparently lost control of his car as he was rounding a long curve near
the intersection
of Pleasant Ridge and Sullivan Rds,according to police
officers.An Army veteran who had served in Vietnam,he had just returned home
from the Verteran's Hospital in Murfreesboro. He was a member of Dutch Valley
Baptist Church.While in Vietnam,Braden served as a scot dog handler in the 101st
Airborne Division.He was awarded the Bronze Star,the Air Medal and the Combat
Infantryman's Badge.Braden was a 1968 graduate of Clinton Senior High School. He
leaves his parents,Mr.and Mrs.Ernest Braden of Laurel Rd.Clinton Rt.3,three
brothers, David and Louis of Clinton Rt.3.,Calvin of Cumberland College,two
sisters,Reba and Gail,both of Clinton Rt.3.,a grandfather,Melvin Braden of
Clinton Rt.3.and a maternal grandmother,Mrs.Ernest Hensley of

Dutch Valley Man Dies At 73 The caretaker of a
farm near Oliver Springs,Clarence Braden,73,of Dutch Valley Rd.Rt.5.,died Friday
at his home. Braden served with the U.S.Army during World War II.He is

held Sunday at Sulphur Springs Cemetery with the Rev.Edward McCarroll

Braden,63,for 20 years a Funeral Director at Martin Funeral Home in Lake
City,died of a heart attack Friday morning after he went to work.He resided at
604 Church St.in Lake City.Braden was elected a member of Anderson County Court
on Aug.5,194? and served one term.He also served on the Lake City Board of Mayor
and
Commission from 1961 to 1963,in charge of the department of
safety.Earlier employment was with Cambria Coal Co.at Briceville and as a
sercurity gyard in Oak Ridge.Braden belonged to Cystal Lodge ?? F&A.M. at
Briceville.He was a deacon at Main Street Baptist Church.Services were at

A Fraterville man,Johnnie
Braden,55,died Saturday night of a heart attack.He lived on Highway 116,Lake
City Rt.2.Braden was born and raised in the Fraterville Community and was a
member of Fraterville Baptist Church.He enjoyed hunting and camping as
hobbies.He was self-employed carpenter.Survivors include his wife,Mary Ruth

held at 2p.m.Friday at Indian Bluff Baptist Church for Miss.Lorene Braden,41, of
Briceville Rt.1,who died Wednesday morning at St.Mary's Hospital in
Knoxville.She was a victim of Bright's disease.Miss.Braden,a member of Indian
Bluff Baptist Church,was a native of Briceville,where she had lived all her life
with her parents,Mr.and Mrs.William Riley Braden,in Lower Flats community. She
had been employed for several years at St.Mary's Hospital as a member of the
housekeeping staff. she became ill in February and had been in and out of the
hospital before entering again three weeks ago. She leaves her parents,three
sisters,Mrs.Evelyn Gibson of Maryville,Mrs.Maxie Bean and Mrs.Barbara Daugherty
both of Briceville,six brothers,W.R.,Kenneth,Donnie and Tommy all of
Briceville,Houston of Knoxville,and Eddie of Cumberland Gap. The Rev.Bill Henley
and the Rev.Taylor McCreary will officiate at the services.Burial will be in the
church cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday night at Martin's in
Lake City.

Former Briceville Man Killed In Virginia Mine The
body of Lucus Braden,48 who was killed July 13 when he came in contact with an
electric wire in a mine in Bonny Blue,Va.,where he was employed,was
returned
to Briceville,where he had lived most of his life,for burial. Funeral services
were held at 2p.m.
Thursday at Briceville with burial in Circle cemetery.
Mr.Braden is survived by a son,Estel,three sisters, Mrs.Dora White, Mrs.Nellie
Galbreath, Mrs. Frances Mahan,all of Briceville,and five brothers,Oscar, and

Clinton Man Is Dead Of Cancer A member of the
Laurel Grove Baptist Church,Walker Braden,71,of 709 Riverbend Rd.,Clinton, died
Thursday morning at St.Mary's Medical Center in Knoxville of cancer.He had been
in the hospital four days. Braden was a native of Briceville but lived the past
eight years with his niece,Mrs.Wallace Carden,in Clinton. Braden,who had
cerebral palsy,held a variety of odd jobs,when he was young but has not been
employed the past 25 years.He enjoyed going to church.In addition to his
niece,he is survived by his stepmother, Mrs.Litha Braden of Lake City,a
brother,Oscar Braden of Clinton,two half-brother,Arthur and Arcus Braden, both
of Indiana, a sister,Mrs.Nellie Galbraith of Clinton,and a half-sister,Mrs.Ollie
Duncan of Oak Ridge. Funeral services were held Saturday at Laurel Branch
Baptist Church with the Rev.Calvin Braden officiating. Burial was in Circle

Mrs.Brown Oldest Church Member,Dies The oldest
member of
Laurel Branch Baptist Church,Mrs.Hester Patterson Brown,93,died
Tuesday at Lake City Health Care Center.Her home had been on Briceville
Rt.1.between Laurel Grove and Briceville.Mr.Brown was born and reared in
Anderson County.She was the widow of a coal miner, Allen Brown,who died in
1937.She made quilts and raised beautiful flowers in her active years. Several
years ago,Laurel Grove Baptist Church presented her a plaque designating her as
its oldest member. Funeral services are to be held at 2p.m.Thursday(today)at Cox
Funeral Home chapel,Lake City,with the Rev.Frank Collett and the Rev.Roy
Patterson officiating.Burial is to be in Laurel Grove Cemetery. Mrs.Brown leaves

Clinton, formerly of Briceville, died Tuesday, April 13 at UT Medical Center.
She retires as Postmaster of the Briceville Post Office and was a member of Coal
Creek Chapter of Eastern Star. She was preceded in death by husband, Ralph H.
Vandergriff; husband, Grover Brown; parents, Noah and Eva Harness. Funeral
services were held Monday, April 19 at Cox-Martin Funeral Home with Rev.
Clarence Duncan and Rev. Edwin Phillips officiating. Interment followed Tuesday
in Laurel Grove Cemetery in Briceville.

teacher in Anderson County's horse and buggy days,Mrs.Viola
Gadson
Brown,99,formerly of Powell Rt.2, died Friday morning at Anderson County Health
Care Center.Mrs.Brown,a native of the Gadsontown community,taught her students
in a church building that was made available in that area.She also taught in the
Wheat community in what now is Oak Ridge.She would live
there the week and
then come home by wagon to be with her family on weekends. Mrs.Brown was a
member of Haven Chapel United Methodist Church,the United Methodist Women and
order of the Eastern Star.When she was younger,she helped organize note singing
groungs.She also enjoyed gardening. Mrs.Brown is survived by a son,Cornelius
L.Reeder Sr.of Powell,brother,Cleophus Gadson of Powell, and a sister,Birdie
Laterback of Alcoa.Funeral services were held Monday at the Haven Chapel United
Methodist Church with the Rev.D.M.Grisham officiating.Burial was in the church

Frank Bullock,59,of Lake Station,Ind.,formerly
of Lake City,died Monday while visiting relatives in
the Medford Community.He
was a retired burner for U.S. Steel and a member of the Coon Hunters
Club and
Steelworkers Union 1014.Bullock also a Navy veteran.He had lived in Indiana for
the past 35 years. His parents were the late John and Nora Vowell Bullock.

Lake City's Oldest Man Dies At
98.
Lake City's oldest man,Silas Bullock,98,of 494 Biddle Lane,died Thursday
at Lake City Nursing Home of complications of age.A native of Campbell County,he
was the son of Mr.and Mrs.Bert Bullock and was born Oct.15,1878.He moved to Lake
City after going to work in the Beech Grove mines.He was a miner until he
retired in 1942.He enjoyed farming and fishing in earlier years.Survivors
include his wife Mrs.Maudie Bell Bullock,three sons,Harvey Bullock of
Caryville,Truman Bullock of Clinton,and Robert Bullock of Gary,Ind.three

Mrs.Byrd Dies Of Heart Attack Sunday
Night
Mrs.Alverta Jeffries Byrd,68,of Clinton Rt.3,died Sunday night at her
home of a heart attack. She was telling her son of a seizure her husband had
ssuffered earlier when she too sustained an attack. She was the wife of the
Rev.Farnk Byrd.he had been taken to Oak Ridge Hospital at 10p.m. Mrs.Byrd was
pronounced dead on arrival shortly thereafter at 10:51p.m. Her husband was told
Monday morning of his wife dead.he is in the coronary unit of Oak Ridge
Hospital. A native of Scott County,Mrs.Byrd and her husband had lived in Clinton
for many years.He was a Baptist minister and was retired from operating Hilltop
Market on Highway 25W. Mrs.Byrd was a member of New Salem Baptist Church.She
leaves a daughter,Mrs.Cecil Crater,four sons, Bethel,Lones,Garnville and Dennis
Byrd all of Clinton,five grandchildren,two great-grandchildren,two brothers,
Elba and Thomas Jeffries of Clinton,and a sister,Mrs.Mertie Long of Clinton.
Funeral services were held at 2p.m.Wednesday at the Holley-Gamble Funeral Home
