Mrs. Kathleen Miller, 86, of Turner Road, Oak Ridge, died Monday,
Nov. 15, 2004, at Saint Mary's Medical Center in Knoxville. She had been in
declining health for the past year, but she was a 10-year survivor of pancreatic
cancer. Born Aug. 30, 1918, in Knox County, Ky., Mrs. Miller was the daughter of
George Barnes Warfield and Cora Caroline Brittain Warfield, who are deceased.
Her husband, Leonard C. Miller, whom she married in May 1945, also preceded her
in death, in January 1981. Her only sister, Pauline Fultz, passed away in August
2001. Mrs. Miller taught a total of 36 years in both Kentucky and Tennessee.
Before she retired in 1980 to care for her husband, she taught 27 years in
Anderson County. She taught at Rosedale in 1953, at Briceville in 1954, and the
last 25 years at South Clinton Elementary School. She taught for many wonderful
principals in the county, but she was especially fond of Bill Holbrook at
Briceville, and Bruce Gregg and V. L. Stonecipher at South Clinton. On her
retirement, she was voted a life-time honorary membership in the Parent-Teacher
Organization at her school. She had a very full and active retirement. Following
the death of her husband, she traveled widely with a special group of friends.
Her travels included all 50 states, all Canadian provinces save one, Australia,
Mexico, Europe, Russia and Scandinavia. Additionally, she enjoyed both vegetable
and flower gardening. She was a more than 30-year member of a Christian
friendship club called the Handy Helpers. Mrs. Miller was a life-long Christian
and she has been active over the years in several local congregations, including
New Salem Baptist Church in Clinton, Calvary Baptist Church in Oak Ridge, Second
Baptist Church in Clinton, and, for the past 28 years, at Central Baptist Church
in Oak Ridge. She had served as both intermediate girls and adult women Sunday
School teacher, the Senior Adult Sunday School director, Adult Choir member, the
Senior Adult Choir (Jubilant Jubilee) member, and was a charter member of the
Senior Adult group known as the Go-Getters. Mrs. Miller is survived by one
daughter, Kathy Carolyn Miller, of Oak Ridge; and her sister's son, Michael
Fultz, of Santa Barbara, Calif. She has many other nieces and nephews, cousins,
and lifelong-friends too numerous to name. Some especially dear friends are
Cordie and Edward Turner, Mary Jones, of Oak Ridge, and Dixie Braden, of
Clinton. The funeral will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 20, 2004, at
Central Baptist Church in Oak Ridge, followed by interment at the Oak Ridge
Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. at the
church preceding the service. The Rev. Dr. Bobby Mullins, senior pastor at
Central Baptist, and the Rev. Bob Gray, associate pastor at Central Baptist,
will officiate. Weatherford's Mortuary is in charge of the service. The family
wishes to thank the staff and management at Saint Mary's Hospital, Knoxville,
and Windwood Health and Rehab Center, Clinton, for the kind and loving care that
Kathleen never failed to receive at their hands through the years. They also
wish to publicly thank Dr. John M. Burkheart, his late father, Dr. John
Burkheart, Dr. Bruce Avery, and every person on their staffs. They could not
have been kinder nor taken better care of her. We also thank Mrs. Della
