Dixie Highway through Jellico

Submitted By Blair Wheeler

Martin Andrew (MA) Wheeler Sr:

LARGE ROAD APPROPRIATIONS---STATE AND FEDERAL AID FOR JELLICO TENN.
Recently a deal was closed which gives the proper appropriation necessary for the completion of the

Dixie Highway through Jellico.

State and Federal aid amount to $100,000 each, which, with the $100,000 county appropriation make $300,000 to be spent on the road from Jellico to Coal Creek, or to the Anderson county line. In about three weeks state engineers will get busy on the plans and the State Highway Commission is expected to let the contracts in about sixty days. Some difficulty has been encountered in getting the proper understanding concerning state and federal aid. Recently a commission went to Nashville and secured the promise of necessary  aid,  and the court authorize the work to begain, but no time was set when the county would receive the aid. M. A. Wheeler then went to Nashville and Secured the definite promise of the appropriation
and the judge was notified that the plan had been accepted.

The road should be completed in less than a year. It will have a minimum width of 24 feet clear of the ditches, and a maximum grade of 6 per cent. Also an appropriation of $5,000 has been obtained to improve the road from Jellow & Newcomb. The work is being done under the commission with  Mr. Wheeler personally in charge. The road is being widened the proper drainage made, and   resurface.

This work speaks well for the enterprise of Mr. M.A. Wheeler who knows all the ins and outs of road construction. When the question of voting bonds for  (article torn) came up for consideration the (article torn) provided Mr.Wheeler be named as one of the Commission. This was granted and he demonstated what can be done with the

proper man at head of affairs.

Mr. Wheeler came to Jellico seventeen years ago when the L & N from Saxtor to Knoxville was under construction. He help to build it, and has been building county roads and railroads ever since. He built the pike from Williamsburg to Corbin, and help to build the Lexington and Eastern railroad up the Kentucky river. Mr. Wheeler is thirty years of age, has a home at Highcliff and an office in Jellico. On being interviwed on the subject of roads Mr. Wheeler said that when this road is completed it will mean that Jellico will enjoy great prosperity from the fact that many tourists will pass this way and business in general will be stimulated.
