Locating The Smaller Communities of
Campbell County
Bethlehem
Bethlehem Campbell County Tn Ultimately referring
to the village where Christ was born, the label may have been assigned here by
persons from the Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, area. Or it may have simply been given
to honor the biblical Bethlehem, located about seven miles northwest of
Nazareth. It means "house of bread."
Broyles
Broyles Campbell County Tennessee Seven persons
with the name Broyles surname lived in this neighborhood in 1870. Three were
named Aaron, two were named Nancy, one was named George, and one was named
William.
Buckeye
Buckeye Campbell County Tennessee This harnlet
likely was named for the local prominence of one or more yellow buckeye trees,
which grow throughtout the eastern half of Tennessee.
Caryville
Caryville Campbell County Tennessee This place-name
may relate in some manner to William Carey, a county clerk of 1834-1838.
Settlement began very early, probally before 1800. The site had previous names,
including Walnut Cove and Wheeler's Station. The latter designation referred to
a prominent merchant and landowner, H.D. Wheeler. A prominent Wheeler
daughter married William Carey. As time passed the Carey family grew in
both numbers and influence. Eventually a vote was held to choose a new
name for the growing town. Caryville beat out Wheelerville by two
votes. Since about 1880, the town has been known as
Caryville.
Chaska
Chaska Campbell County Tennessee According to
American Place-Names, in Minnesota this Siouan term was a name given to a
first-born child. It is not known why it was applied to this Tennessee
site.
Cherry Bottom
This is where I grew up. Quiet, except when it was
time for the train. Once thru the night you could hear it going by. Out the road
away is Oak Grove.
Clinchmore
Clinchmore Campbell County Tn
The regional flood of record in 1965 destroyed the
community of Clinchmore.
Coal Creek
Everybody knows its what used to be Lake City. Learn

Cumberland View
Cumberland View Campbell County Tennessee One of
the higher elevations in the county is called Cumberland Mountain. The
Cumberland range cuts across this (northeast) region of
Tennessee.
Vasper
There used to be a little school at the top of the
hill in Vasper. My mom said she went to school there.
