Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA)
One of the most important
events in Tennessee since the Civil War was the establishment of the Tennessee
Valley Authority (TVA) in May 1933.
TVA’s got a Web site just for kids! Learn about how TVA makes
electricity, reduces flood damage, protects wildlife, and lots more. There’s a
section for teachers, too.

The construction of TVA projects involved the
removal of thousands of graves.
TVA Cultural Resources consults with 18 federally
recognized Native American tribes that have a cultural and historical interest
in the Tennessee Valley (see list below).
Grave Removal
The threat of rising reservoir waters flooding local cemeteries
forced Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) officials to relocate entire cemeteries
in southeastern Tennessee. In doing so, they found reminders of slaves as
members of extended Southern families.
The TVA relocated the graves of five slaves, one unidentified,
buried in the Wilson family cemetery. The inscription on their monument reads:
"To the memory of Ned, Claibe, Rhoda and Ett, Negro slaves of Charles and Peggy
Haley who remained faithful to the end."
When TVA relocated individuals and families from
their homeplaces, forms known as Family Relocation Forms were
completed. These forms detailed each family's situation and background and
are tremendously useful pieces of information. Unfortunately these forms are no
longer housed at TVA, but have been transferred to the National
Archives--Southeastern Region, 1557 St. Jospeh Avenue, East Point, Georgia
30344, (404) 763-7650. Also with this information at the National Archives
are other listings of individuals and businesses who were
impacted by TVA projects.
