Roger Leroye ABFALTER Roger Leroye "Big Roger" Abfalter, age 71 died January 3 2015 at his home in Henderson. He was born June 16 1943 and raised in Lansing MI the son of John Chris and Charlotte Anna WICKS ABFALTER. He went to school in Lansing and married Linda PEACOCK in 1962. He owned and operated Christian Drywall. They moved to Henderson in 1971. He was a member of Sanford Hill Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife; Linda Peacock Abfalter; a son Roger J Abfalter and wife Melissa of Jackson; a daughter Misty Abfalter Jordan and husband Todd of Jackson; two brothers; John Abfalter and Bill Abfalter both of Lansing MI; a sister Mary Abfalter Allen of Charlotte, MI and four grand daughters; Emily Jordan, Holly Jordan, Julie Jordan, and Lexi Abfalter. Mary Nelle SMITH ABNEY Mary Nelle Smith Abney, age 97 of Henderson died January 24 2015 at Methodist Hospice Residence in Memphis. Mrs Abney was born December 28 1917 in the Jacks Creek Community of Chester County, daughter of Robert Algie and Jimmie Rachel RECORD SMITH. She lived most of her life in Henderson and in 1940 married Truett Ridgeway ABNEY, who preceded her in death. She attended Freed Hardeman, Union University and later Memphis State University. She devoted much of her life to teaching and taught for 36 years in Chester County, (at Enville, Deanburg, Jacks Creek, Henderson, and finally at East Chester Elementary where she taught 4th grade). She also worked for the U S Office of Price Administration processing ration books during World War II. She was the organizing Regent of the Henderson Station Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and served in a variety of roles for the DAR from 1976 until the time of her death. She was a life member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary and a member of the Henderson Church of Christ. She was also a member of the Bon Tres social club of Henderson and former member of the Ingleside Book Club. She was a member of the ladies golf association at Woodland Hills and had a handicap of 20. She is survived by one son, Truett Robert Abney, who grew up in Henderson, his wife Donna Aucoin Abney and grand children Allison Abney of Washington, DC and Bryan Abney of Memphis. She is also survived by her sister, Virginia Dare McAdams and brother, Neal Smith both of Henderson and one niece and three nephews. Charles B ADA Jr Charles Benton Ada Jr, 95, passed away Friday, May 3 2013 at the Henderson Health and Rehabilitation Center. He was born February 20 1918 in Madison County, the son of Charles Benton and Charity Magdaline NAYLOR ADA. He attended school in Madison County. He was married to Frances ROLAND on May 17 1941. He worked as a plumber and pipefitter most of his life, working in Indiana and West Tennessee, at his retirement he was a member of the Plumbers Pipefitters, Local 407. He enjoyed hunting, especially coon hunting and he was a member of Unity Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, Frances Roland Ada of Henderson; a daughter, Carolyn Griffin of Finger and two sons, Jerry Ada (Brenda) of Henderson and Tommy Ada (Donett) of Homer IL; eight grand children, Amy Anderson (Johnny), Mark Griffin (Heather), Matt Griffin, Andrea Talbott (Bryan), Dawn Weisman (Doug), Dana Ada (Brian), Joe Ada (Beth) and Tammy Perry (Randy); 18 great grand children; and one great great grandchild. He was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters, Lillian Frye, Ora Warren, Jack Ada, Clarence Ada and Willie Ada.
Mayola FRYE ADAMS Mayola Frye Adams, 86 of Jackson, retired federal employee in Washington, died April 30 1995 of heart failure at Jackson Madison County General Hospital. She was a member of East Trinity United Methodist Church and had also been employed by Smith Furniture and JC Penney in Jackson. Miss Adams is survived by cousins. Hazel Jean SMITH ADDINGTON Hazel Addington, 85 died March 15 2017. Mrs Addington was born December 29 1931 in Henderson and graduated from Chester County High School. She was preceded in death by her parents, Bunyan Emanuel "Bunny" SMITH and Minnie Jane BREWER SMITH; her husband, Roger W Addington; her brothers, Ernest Smith and Horace Smith and sister, Mary Ruth Smith. Sgt Dustin Matthew ADKINS Dustin Adkins, 22 of Finger became Chester County's first combat fatality in Iraq. He was born January 6 1984 in Jackson and grew up in Henderson, the son of Richard ADKINS and Karen Lynn JONES ADKINS SCUDDER. He attended school in Chester County and graduated from Gateway Academy in 2003. He was actively engaged in a combat mission at the time of his death on December 4 2006 near Haditha Iraq. Adkins was a dental assistant, but was also a fully-trained Special Forces soldier assigned to the Fifth Special Forces Group that routinely went on combat missions. Adkins attended Chester County schools through his junior year in high school before completing his senior year home schooling through Gateway Christian Academy. He enlisted in the Army in 2003. His basic training was at Fort Leonard Wood MO and his advanced individual training at Fort Sam Houston TX. After completing his medical training at Fort Sam Houston TX, Adkins was assigned to the Fifth Special Forces Group at Fort Campbell and he graduated from the Army's Airborne school at Fort Benning GA. Both of Adkins combat tours in Iraq were with the Fifth Special Forces Group. In addition to the Bronze Star, one of the nation's highest awards for gallantry in combat and the Meritorious Service medals, Adkins had been awarded the Joint Service Medal, the Army Achievement Medal, the Army Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Iraq Campaign Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Army Service Ribbon and the Parachutist Badge. The Army promoted him posthumously to Sergeant from his rank of Specialist at the time of his death. He married Tiffany HOWELL on November 4 2003. He is survived by his wife, Tiffany Renee HOWELL ADKINS; two children, Matthew Vincent Adkins, age 3 and Atlanta Claire Adkins, age 2; his father, Richard ADKINS; his mother, Karen Lynn JONES ADKINS SCUDDER of Finger; his grand mother, Mayrene Adkins of Finger; a sister, Crystal Gayle Adkins Webb (Sgt Jason) of Henderson; a brother, Staff Sgt Nicholas Alan "Nick" Adkins of Clarksville; great grand mother, Norma Dickson of Finger; step father, Rickey Scudder of Finger; a step brother, Michael Scudder; and a step sister, Nikki Scudder. He was preceded in death by grandparents, Woodrow Adkins and Bill and Mary Jones. The memorial service was at Old Friendship Baptist Church. US Army Chaplain Kent Harris eulogized Adkins and Brother Glenn Harris recalled the young man who frequented the aisles of Old Friendship Baptist Church in his youth. So large was the military contingent on hand to honor Adkins that many of the soldiers stood in formation outside the Old Friendship Baptist Church as every available seat inside was taken. He was carried to his gravesite at the Cave Springs Cemetery by an honor guard made up of soldiers from his own Fifth Special Forces Group, stationed in Fort Campbell KY. He was buried with full military honors. Among those present to honor the fallen Special Forces soldier were US Congresswoman Marsha Blackburn and no fewer than three US Army Major Generals. A large group of soldiers came from Fort Campbell KY, home of Adkins' Fifth Special Forces Group, and there was also a large contingent of soldiers from the Tennessee National Guard. The full military honors service included a solemn bagpipe rendition of "Amazing Grace," a 21-gun salute and "Taps," played by a solitary soldier on a nearby hillside. As a recording of "The Ballad of the Green Berets" reached its crescendo, the sun peaked out of the clouds for the first time on a dreary, wet day, only to disappear a short time later following the final volley from the squad of riflemen who rendered their time-honored military salute. Elizabeth Brown HARRIS ALPHA Elizabeth Harris Alpha, age 96 died in New Orleans LA April 24 2015. She was born February 11 1919 in Henderson, daughter of Jesse Harris and Alice BROWN HARRIS. Elizabeth attended Chester County Schools as well as Freed Hardeman, Memphis State and Union University. She was a member of Chi Omega Sorority. She kept books for her father’s businesses in Henderson, worked at the Arsenal in Pine Bluff Arkansas and the atomic plant in Oak Ridge during WWII, and was an employment counselor in Forrest City AR for the state of Arkansas for many years. Elizabeth married the late Harold Marvin ALPHA in 1943 at Sheridan Arkansas. Harold was from Adams North Dakota and a flight instructor at Pine Bluff. She and Harold moved to New Orleans in 1996. Elizabeth is survived by a daughter, Jane Alpha Hicks and son in law, Robert Hicks of New Orleans; a grand daughter, Alice Hicks Brown (Robert E) and great grand sons, Riley Alexander Brown and Dexter Jesse Brown all of Grantham England. Harold Marvin ALPHA Harold M. Alpha 90, died March 27 2007. He was born in Galata Montana to Hans and Marie GUNDERSON ALPHA. They were immigrants to the US from Norway in the early 1900's, finally residing in Adams ND. He graduated from the North Dakota State School of Science. He was a flight instructor in the Pine Bluff AR School of Aviation in the early 1940's. He served in the Army Air Corps from June 1944 to January 1946 and flew C-47 cargo planes over the "Hump" from India to China and went on many search and rescue missions. He was the purchasing manager for the Eaton Yale and Towne plant in Forrest City AR for about 24 years. He married Elizabeth Brown HARRIS of Henderson, TN in 1943. He leaves his beloved wife; daughter, Jane Alpha Hicks (Robert H.) of New Orleans, LA; granddaughter, Alice Hicks Brown (Robert E.) and great grand son, Riley Alexander Brown of England; nephews, Tau (Ann) Alpha of Palo Alto CA and Kappa (Cheryl) Alpha and Sigma (Bobbi) Alpha of Grand Junction CO. He was preceded in death by his brother, Andrew Alpha (Fern) of Denver CO and his sister, Greta (Allen) Levang of Adams ND. He had been in declining health for the past two year in New Orleans, where he has resided since 1996. He will be sorely missed by family, friends, fellow airmen and Memphis area co workers. Alice Jo Ann ROSS ALTIER Alice Jo Ann Ross Altier, age 80 died November 11 2014 at her home at Mifflin. She was born November 20 1933 at Luray, in northern Chester County, the daughter of Mabon Earl and Ruby JONES ROSS. She graduated from Chester County High School in 1952. She moved to Chicago in 1955 and lived there 28 years where she did machinist work. She is the widow of Bill ALTIER. She moved back to Mifflin in 1983 and has made her home there since. She was a member of Mt Pleasant United Methodist Church for many years and was lay leader. She loved to garden and quilt. She is survived by two sons, James E. (J.W.) Walker and wife Peg of Black Canyon City AZ and Timothy Brocksome and wife Rena of Las Vegas NV and also seven grand children and three great grand children. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a daughter, Beth Gibbons in 2004 and a brother, Little Earl Ross. Pink AMOS Jr Pink Amos Jr, 84 died February 22 2011 in Enville. He was born May 16 1926 in Henrietta NC. He served in Europe during WWII with the US Army. He married Pauline Roark in 1944. Mrs Amos preceded him in death in 2000. After service he worked as a deck hand on a tugboat for the railroad. He lived in Hampton VA until 27 years ago, then moving to Enville. Joe Robert ANDERSON Joe Robert Anderson, 80 of Jacks Creek died January 29 2009, at Jackson Madison County General Hospital. He was born July 16 1928 and raised in the Jacks Creek community of Chester County, the son of John Bryan and Reba Mae HOLLEY ANDERSON. He attended school in Henderson and Plainview. He married Jean HOPPER in 1951 and they made their home in the Jacks Creek community all their married life. He had farmed as a young man and worked at Forked Deer Stave Company in Jackson for many years. He was a self employed trucker and had worked at Century Electric in Lexington. He later worked for the Environmental Department at the Main Station in Henderson from 1995 until 2004. He is survived by his wife, Jean Hopper Anderson; a son in law, Jimmy Dyer of Jacks Creek; a grand daughter, Kristy Sherrod (Chip) of Henderson; three brothers, Ray Anderson of Phoenix AZ., Kenneth Anderson of Lexington and Thomas Anderson of Quincy IL; a sister, Georgia Brown of Lexington. Ronnie ANDERSON Ronnie Anderson, age 65 died May 17 2015 at Jackson Madison County General Hospital. He was born May 28 1949 in Chester County, the son of Conn and Eddie Faye HAMLETT ANDERSON. He attended schools in Carroll and Chester County. He worked in construction as a builder and heavy equipment operator. Ronnie was a member of the American Legion in Jackson and a former member of the Henderson Elks Lodge. Ronnie enjoyed working and dancing. He had operated Ronnie's Family Dance near Finger for several years. He also operated Ronnie's Steakhouse and Ronnie Anderson Backhoe and Dozier Service. He enjoyed all kinds of car races and also enjoyed auctions. He worked as a Fabrication Analyst at Proctor & Gamble in PA for thirty years. He married Bonnie HUNSINGER in 1981. They moved to California in 1991 and then to Chester County in 1997. He loved gardening and working with wood. Mr Antoine is survived by his wife, Bonnie Lynn Hunsinger Antoine of Henderson; a brother, Terry Antoine of Bradenton FL and a sister, Lana McDowell of Morgan County TN. Paul ARENDALL William Paul Arendall, 96, of Henderson died November 21 2006 at West Tennessee Transitional Care in Jackson. Funeral at Casey Funeral Home Chapel with Dr Steve Mischke officiating. Burial followed in Henderson City Cemetery. He was born November 18 1910 in the Mifflin community of Chester County, the son of the late Claude and Jimmie MELTON ARENDALL. He attended Chester County Schools. He married Ruth THOMAS in 1933 and they made their home at Mifflin a couple of years and then on East Main Street for over 70 years. They owned and operated Paul Arendall Grocery and Appliances on Main Street for over 50 years. (My father bought his 1st TV in the 1950's here.) They closed the store in 1980. He was a member of Henderson Masonic Lodge #485 for over 50 years and a member of the Henderson Chapter Order of the Eastern Star. He was a longtime member of the Lions Club, having served as president and in many other areas. He had served more than one term as a Henderson City Alderman. He was a longtime active member of Henderson First United Methodist Church. Survivors include a daughter, Linda Arendall Thornton of Memphis; a son, James Paul Arendall of Sarasota FL; a half sister, Virginia Priddy of Henderson; and a grand son. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Thomas Arendall in 1993 and a grand son.

Doyle Loverne ARMOUR Doyle Loverne Armour, 90 died September 20 2015 at the Henderson Health & Rehabilitation Center. He was born January 22 1925 in New Madrid MO and grew up in Chester County, the son of William Finley and Lora GARNER ARMOUR. He graduated from Chester County High School in 1943 and entered the US Navy and served during WWII from 1943 until 1946 aboard the USS LST 699 as a signalman. He married Carolyn RUSSOM in 1947. He was in the Navy Reserve from 1950 until 1952 when he was recalled for the Korean War and served as a Quartermaster. He worked as shipping foreman at Salant and Salant for 33 years and later worked 11 years as superintendent at the Chester County Jail until he retired in 1994. He was treasurer and deacon at Sanford Hill Baptist Church and served on the original committee for starting the mission church at Sanford Hill. Nellie Bess SUMMERS ARMOUR Nellie Bess Summers Armour, 102 died December 23 2015 at Jackson Madison County General Hospital. Mrs Armour was born January 26 1913 in Abilene TX and moved to Tennessee at an early age. She was the daughter of Isaac Lafayette and Estelle REED SUMMERS. She was educated in Chester County Public Schools. She graduated from Chester County High School and attended Union University. She is a graduate of Freed Hardeman University and of Memphis State University where she received a B. S. Degree in Elementary Education. Mrs Amour retired in 1976 after serving forty years in the Chester County School System. She held membership in the Chester County Teachers Association, Tennessee Education Association and the National Education Association. She was a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary, the Chester County Retired Teachers Association and the Bon Tres Club. She was also a member of the First Baptist Church and the Order of the Eastern Star. She married Thomas B "Tom" Armour in 1941. He preceded her in death in 1994. Mr Armour served as Superintendent of the Chester County School System for many years. Robbie DULEY ARMOUR Robbie Mae Duley Armour age 90 died April 11 2003 at Jackson Madison County General Hospital. Mrs Armour was born January 13 1913 and was reared in Barlow KY; the daughter of the late Leonard and Mae TEMPLE DULEY. She attended schools in New Madrid MO and in 1929 was married to Joseph Pat Armour. They made their home in Chester County where Mr Armour farmed and served as Chester County Sheriff from the 1940's to the early 1950's. They lived in the Chester County Jail, where Mrs Armour prepared all the meals for the prisoners when her husband, Pat Armour served as Sheriff. Mrs Armour later worked at Salant & Salant in Henderson, Oakley Fashions in Jackson and Chester Manufacturing Company as a seamstress. She retired in 1966. Mr. Armour died in 1972. She was very active in the Sanford Hill Baptist Church and later a member of the First Christian Church in Lexington. She is survived by four children Tim Armour and Bobby Len Armour both of Southaven MS; Doris Gail Armour White of Henderson and Patty Jeanne Armour Higginbottom of Savannah. She was preceded in death by a son Joe Armour in 1969. She has a brother F. Ray Duley of Oscar KY and was preceded in death last month by a brother Dale Duley. Allen Anderson ARNOLD Allen Anderson Arnold, 89 died December 16 2012 at the Jackson Madison County General Hospital. He was born November 11 1923 in the New Friendship Community of Chester County, the son of Allen A and Edna Ross BAIN ARNOLD. He attended school at New Friendship and graduated at Pinson High School in 1940. He entered the US Navy in 1944, and was in the Navy Air Corp. He served in the South Pacific and returned in 1945. He married Minnie LATHAM in 1947. He farmed for many years and drove the Pet Milk and Grade A Milk Route, for about 10 years. He also worked at the Chester County Highway Dept and Quality Mfg. He worked as supervisor for Madison Mill Work from the early 1970's until 1984. He owned and operated the Hill Top Grocery for five years. He was a member of the VFW Post 4844, the American Legion Post 157 and was a member of the Big Springs United Methodist Church. He is survived by a son, Allen L Arnold; two daughters, Alice Kay Stewart of Bartlett and Susie Terry of Forney TX; six grand children; nine great grand children and three sisters, Adelle Cooper of Henderson, Leander Martin of Jackson and Inez Palmer of Huntingdon. Calvin ARNOLD Jr Calvin Arnold Jr, 76 died April 21 2012 in the Mercy Hospital of Springfield MO. He was born July 31 1935, the seventh child of Cal and Mattie ISBELL ARNOLD in Henderson, where he grew up and attended school in Montezuma and Henderson. Calvin entered the US Army and served his country for the next 30 years. He earned several awards and commendations while doing several tours in Vietnam and Korea. He was also stationed in Panama, Mississippi, Wisconsin and Missouri. He attained the rank of Sergeant Major. While in Korea he met and married his wife, Yong Cha An on September 23 1970. After retiring from the military in May 1986, he and his family made their home near Fort Leonard Wood. Following retirement, he worked as a contractor for the civil service on Fort Leonard Wood. He also worked as a substitute teacher in the building trades department at Waynesville Vo-Tech School. He was a member of the American Legion, Waynesville Masonic Lodge #375, AF & AM, and the Waynesville/Ft. Leonard Wood Shrine Club. He is survived by his wife, Yong Cha; two sons, Jerry Arnold (Tina) of Fulton MO and Mark Arnold of Springfield MO; two grand children, Matalin and Nicholas Arnold; three sisters, Zola Rowland and Thelma Beshires, both of Henderson, and Ruth Worsham of Bemis and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Joe T ARNOLD Joe T Arnold, 79 died January 17 2010 of melanoma cancer at his home with family members and friends at his side. He was a U S Army Veteran serving in Korea. He was a retired maintenance foreman and drove for Williams Trucking until he was diagnosed with cancer in July of 2009. He was a member of Unity Baptist Church, where he served as the Assistant Choir Director and Sunday School Teacher. Mr Arnold was a family man, who loved to spend time with his wife, children, grand children, and great grand children. He also loved to play the guitar and sing, and was in numerous bands for many years. He was a square dance caller, and traveled the country calling square dances. Mr Arnold was preceded in death by his parents, John and Lela Arnold and two sons, Danny and Michael Arnold. He worked for Walgreens for about 12 years and went into the security business. He worked as an investigator for a private security firm. He was a member of the Millington Baptist Church. She enjoyed many hobbies and loved being with family. She was a member of the Finger Church of Christ. James "Jim" ASHWORTH Jr James "Jim" Ashworth Jr, 85 of Henderson, died July 22 2010. He was born in Clarksdale MS, the son of James M Ashworth Sr and Savannah Lee Hardeman Ashworth. He was reared in Memphis. He volunteered for the Army December 8 1940, one day after Pearl Harbor. He served from December 1941 until March 1943, but never served overseas. He worked with his father as a painter for several years after his discharge from the Army. Then he worked in different professions including all Forest Hill cemeteries as a Counselor, Veterans Cab as a field supervisor, where he met Hattie. He owned a delivery service in Memphis until 1980 when they moved to Houston TX and worked for a delivery company for two years. He later went to work in his true calling, painting. He moved to Henderson in 1992. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Henderson and a lifetime member of the DAV. He is survived by his wife, Hattie Ashworth of Henderson; four daughters, Monna Lee Bowers of Munford, Ruth "Crickett" Stone of Ada OK, Rhonda Cheryl Bartsch of Henderson and Crystal "Leesa" Settle of Beech Bluff; a son, Roy C Smith Jr of Philadelphia MS; fifteen grand children and twenty great grand children. Mrs Austin served on the Henderson City Board of Alderman from October 1980 until September 2000, serving as Vice Mayor for eighteen of those twenty years. She also had served as the Worthy Matron of the Eastern Star in Henderson and a longtime member of the First Baptist Church. V.R. "Red" AUSTIN Funeral Services for Mr Verna Ralph "Red" Austin age 92 was held at the Chapel of Leon Johnson Funeral Home with burial in Henderson City Cemetery. Mr Austin died December 11 2005 at the West Tennessee Transitional Care Center. He was born April 11 1913 in Hardin County TN son of Elmer Felix and Virgie BANKS AUSTIN. He graduated from Saltillo School and attended Freed Hardeman College for two years. Mr Austin owned and operated the Electric Grill in Henderson for 37 1/2 years. He was a long time member of the First Baptist Church in Henderson. Survivors include his wife Odessia BURRESS AUSTIN of Henderson TN and a son Tony Austin and wife Carolyn of Nashville TN; three grandsons Mark Austin, Scott Austin and Steven Austin; two great grandsons Tyler and Coltin Austin. He was preceded in death by sisters Irma and Rubye Austin and Lou Nell Ozment.
Pamela Darlene PUSSER AYERS Pamela Darlene "Pam" Pusser Ayers, 64 died March 1 2017 in Jackson. She was born October 25 1952 in Chester County, the daughter of Willie and Ida Corene RAINEY PUSSER. She attended school in Chester County. She married Joe Ayers on February 9 1970. They made their home in Chester County for the last 47 years. Pam worked at several garment factories over the years. She worked later in life with her husband's Heating and Air Company. She was a member of the Enville Baptist Church. In addition to her husband and children, she mostly enjoyed the blessing of her grand children. She is survived by her husband, Joe Ayers of Jacks Creek; a daughter, Tonya Taylor (Don) of Jacks Creek; a son, Chris Ayers of Chattanooga; a sister, Vera Whitmore of Columbia TN; two brothers, James Carl Pusser of Beech Bluff and Mike Pusser of Jacks Creek; five grand children, Shana Taylor, Zachary Taylor, Shianne Taylor, Amber Taylor and Richard Taylor. In addition to her parents, Mrs Ayers was preceded in death by twin daughters Julie Ayers and Jeanette Ayers on December 27 1972. Larry John AZEVEDO Larry John Azevedo died April 11 2017 at home in Henderson. He was born November 6 1946 in Manteca CA the son of Manuel S and Katherine J Jordan Azevedo. He married Jacquelyn Gayle Wall on April 18 1964. He was a retired Supervisor for Anvil International and a member of The Springs Pentecostal Church. He is survived by his wife, Jacquelyn Azevedo of Henderson; a daughter, Cheri Lott (Rex) of Luray; two sons, John Azevedo (Angela) of Henderson and Mark Azevedo (Heather) of Selmer; three sisters, Lucy Daniel of Tulsa OK, Dody Daniel and Dorothy Daniel, both of Jacks Creek; two brothers, Ray Azevedo and Manuel Azevedo, both of Henderson and seven grand children.
