In the 1850 Census of Dekalb County, Tennessee
It appears evident that the census takers could not spell very well, to be expected. Here are as many names and
words as I could identify as possible misspellings. If you cannot find the person you are looking for in the index,
look here for possible other spellings. Also a soundex should be used where necessary.
Under occupations: "wagging maker" was repeatedly the spelling used for wagon maker in the district 1
census.
Surnames:
"Bennitt" used for Bennett
"Blackbern" used for Blackburn
"Borter" used for possibly Border
"Bratten" and "Bratton" both appear in this census
"Brgges" has the vowels left out- Brigges or Bridges or ?
"Broxton" maybe should have been Braxton
"Edgey" used for Agee
"Fuson" and "Fuston" both appear in this census
"Garrtt" for Garrett
"Hchs" used for Hicks?
"Jinkins" used for Jenkins
"Overal" used for Overall
"Rite" used for Wright
