Important Historical Dates of Organization:

The Daughters of the Union Veterans of the Civil War 1861-1865 was organized 30 May 1885 at Massillon, OH. The five originators were: Olive Howard, Harriet Knapp, Eva Merwin Lucas, Frank Merwin and Bertha Martin.  The first meeting was held in the home of Eva Merwin Lucas, 419 First Street, S.E., Massillon, OH, on 3 June 1885. These fine ladies were the original members of the Mrs. Major McKinley Tent No.1, Massillon, OH.

Incorporated in the State of OH, 12 December 1885 - National Alliance Daughters of Veterans.

Endorsed by The Grand Army of the Republic at the 34th Annual Encampment held in Chicago, IL  1900.

Name changed to Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War at the 35th National Convention held in Grand Rapids, MI  1925.

Name changed to Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War 1861-1865 at the 54th National Convention held in Des Moines, IO 1944.

National Headquarters dedicated 13 April 1969 - 503 South Walnut Street, Springfield, IL 62704-1932.  Ph: (217)544-0616.

Federal Charter granted by Public Law 99-172, 9 December 1985.

 

Organization:

Local groups, called Tents, are named for Army Nurses who served in the Civil War or any loyal woman of the Civil War era whose patriotic deeds during the years 1861-1865 were recorded.

States with three or more tents have a State Department and may have Members-at-Large.

The National Organization consists of all the State Departments and also National Members-at-Large and Detached Tents.

Detached Tents are tents in states with less than three tents.

 

National Headquarters and Museum

During the spring of 1934, a building was purchased in Washington, D.C., which as the National Headquarters for sixteen years, until it was sold in 1950. 

Following the 1951 National Convention in Chicago, a building in Springfield, IL was purchased and dedicated in June 1952, as the National Headquarters.

In February 1964, this old building was sold and a new building was erected and dedicated in April 1969 as the new National Headquarters adn Museum.
