Wood Cemetery, Fentress County, Tennessee

This is a small cemetery along the Old Copley Road in the
Poplar Cove area of Fentress County. It is located northeast of
Helena and not far from Little Crab. The land is owned by Joe
Beaty. This is the cemetery where Matthew WOOD (May 1, 1800 -
July 12, 1877) is buried. I believe he is the son of Jesse WOOD
and Nancy CATES. I had to drive through a field for about 200
yards to get to the cemetery. The graves were covered by pokeweed
and high grass and weeds. I knocked them down enough to barely
see the stones and tent graves. The stones are weather beaten
so much as to be nearly unreadable. It is less than 1/2 mile from
the cemetery where James L. BEATY and Lillian Mae YOUNG are buried.
Jack BEATY owns the land where Matthew Wood, wife Elizabeth "Betsy"
WOOLSEY, son Charles C. WOOD, daughter Sarah Ann WOOD are buried.
There is an Acasia WOOD buried there who I do not know about.
She? was born November 2, 1877 and died May 15, 1878 and is buried
at this cemetery as well. I would guess that she is a grandchild
of Matthew and Elizabeth. She has a tent grave and is buried next
to Matthew WOOD. This place was called the Mitch POWELL Farm in
an article by Wilma REAGAN PINCKLEY in the History of Fentress
County, Tennessee Fentress County Historical Society, History
of Fentress County, Tennessee (Curtis Media Corporation 1987).
The book was put out by Fentress County Historical Society.
