The following is the list of researchers on the Coggin family, that I have heard from thus far. We are all descendants of John Coggin and Ann Powell
or John Coggin and Allyss Elizabeth Benson.
Mr. Roy Coggin is the newest person on my list, and has a book which may be of interest to the rest of you. You might want to send him your family information, and he can update his records on your immediate families.
For those of you researching Martha and Samuel Thompson Clemmons,
Martha' s mother is listed as Ann Powell.
For those of you that I sent information in the past, I have always tried to state that I did not have any proof of ancestry beyond John and Allyss.
Roy has documented family beyond this, and the line does not go through Robert or Robert Sr, but through
William Coggin and Elizabeth Price >
John Coggin, Jr. and Ann Moore >
John Coggin and Frances Bland.

I hope this will be helpful to everyone. I will answer questions if I can, but I am trying to refer you to a better source than myself. I look forward to hearing from you anyway.

Nancy,
I have seen your web site, many times. I do not mind if you post any information I share. I hope that it will benefit all of us.
Roy Coggin has done a lot of work and documentation for his book. It is an excellent source for information on the ancestry of your Martha Coggin and my Jeremiah Coggin (her brother.)
Thank you for all the work you are doing. I am enjoying the Internet searching so much, I find little time to go to the libraries anymore. The immediate responses from people has been so exciting.
Thanks again,

Nancy,
I think this is a great idea. I heard from just about everyone on the list the fist time I posted to everyone. I think you will hear from them, and there are a couple on the list that may not respond, but I will get there information to you. (One is my cousin Ken, who found our Coggin line back in 1992 or 93. He is not doing much research these days, and he doesn't use the computer, at this point. We are working on him, cause he's done a lot and we don't want him to stop.)
I sent a note to everyone just now, you will receive it also. I had one person on the list by mistake (Bill McLaughlin.) I have just this evening heard from Willard Merrit. I am forwarding his letter on to Roy Coggin because I cannot answer one of his questions. I will get my information to you sometime this weekend.

I also think that we should list the spouses, because some of the names are the same as we go down through the lineage, and it will help others to possibly identify their line.

I am so new at the Intenet and computer research, but I do want to put together a web page. I will probably wait until Christmas Vacation or Spring Break now that school has started again. I am trying to adjust to a new teaching position this year, as well as juggle my "Mommy" duties to my 6 year old son. I will let you know when I have it ready.

Thank you for putting all together on your web site. I hope that others will benefit from the knowledge and work we have all done.

Take care and God Bless,
Kay

Hi everyone,

I am forwarding a copy of the note above from Nancy Goodman. As you can see, her husband is a descendant of Martha Coggin and Samuel Thompson Clemons. I want to give each of you her Web page address, and ask that you look at it and considering sending the information regarding your lineage from John and Ann or Allyss. You may send it directly to Nancy or to me. I have tried to keep notes about from whom each of you descended, but I may not have the exact lineage from John & Allyss to you.

I got a response from almost all of you when I sent out the last update. I hope that you will respond. I will furnish Nancy with as much as I can, but if you do not want to be added to the web site, please let me know. We will not post your information.

Nancy Goodman's web page is located at:
https://sites.rootsweb.com/~tngenny1/index.html

The new part which she is adding will be:

I hope to hear from you soon.

Hi Nancy,
Thanks for your note. I agree with Kay's comments in general on Martha Coggin Clemmons but think John Coggin (Cogan) was born before 1638, about 1620. As for printing what is in my book, I have no objections to you using the material.

Nancy, have you heard of, or do you know, a Porter Briggs ? His last address that I have is P.O. Box 370, Flint Hill, VA 22627. Porter did a documentary video on Samuel Thompson Clemmons and his wife Martha. He spent quite some time in Montgomery Co. doing research and filming. Have you seen or heard of the video ?

This was about two years or so ago so don't know if he ever got it on TV or not. If I find out anything I'll let you know.

Since your husband is a descendant of Martha and Samuel, I would like to get a list of their children and a short brief of the linage to your husband, for inclusion in the book.

Enjoyed reading your web site info. Genealogy and TN, also Nancy Goodman/idx.html.

Nancy, Kay mentioned "The Descendants of Coggin, John 1620-1698" The cost of printing, binding and postage has resulted in an increase in price to $20, If I am to keep from going deeper into the red zone. Do you want a copy ?

Nancy,
Thanks for your offer to put my book on the Coggin web page.
I must tell you that I am a retired Col. from the Air Force and a novice but avid genealogist and do it as a hobby. I am not in the market to sell my book, but know that I can't produce them without some remuneration, because I don't have a backlog or a surplus of funds (I'm not hurting, tho'). Kidding aside, if you would like to make an entry that the book is available, you may do so.
The title of the book is " The Descendants of Coggin, John -- 1620-1698 ",
the price is $20 without pictures and $35 with about 20+ pictures. (
The book is not finished and probably will never be finished, but will be the basis for additions for years to come ).

Nancy, I need your s-mail address. I want to send you a copy of my book. Don't know how to explain, but I recently had three copies made using some good pics. and some not so good, but the're not too bad, either (my wife thinks the zeroxed ones are terrible). Anyway, send your addess and I'll send a book.

New subject, Kay and Nancy: I think the Coggin Research Team should include and start with John Coggin, Jr and (---) Moore instead of John and Allyss Elizabeth Benson. That way all of John Coggin's ancestors would be in the act. For instance, Scott Fraser is not a descendant of John and Allyss but is of Robert, son of Robert and Sara D. Green. I have several more who are ancestors of Robert rather than John. Do you both agree ?

Nancy and Kay, here are a few names I recommend we add to the Coggin Research Team, if you agree.
1) Stevie Jones [email protected] ( Alfred Coggin).
2) Patricia McClure [email protected] ( James Merritt and Nancy Coggin ).
3) Dan [email protected] ( Coggin descendant ).
4) Gail Tomlinson -- [email protected] ( Robert Jr. and Molly Green ).
5) Doris Neil -- [email protected] ( Robert Jr. and Molly Green ).
6) Ann Schultz -- [email protected] (Coggin descendant )
Love to all,

Roy,

I agree, we should go back as far in the ancestry as we have our ties. And, I have already added the 6 people you mentioned to my list and I will send them a copy of the e-mail I sent to everyone else requesting that they send us their lineage.

I am going to a Thompson family reunion tomorrow. There is at least one of the family members there that is doing family research, and I have not even talked to them about the Internet. I will find out if they would like to be included. I also should contact a couple of others that are on my Cooper list, they are also Coggin descendants. With all the networking, we should bring back a lot of descendants into the "fold."

I should have asked you for an update on your price for your book. I have misquoted, but I still will tell anyone who asks that it is worth purchasing. I appreciate the pictures and I think there is a strong family resemblance between my grandfather, Henry Preston Cooper, and the picture of Simon Riley Coggin following page 44. I will try to find a picture, scan it and send it to you so that you can see for yourself...

Take care and God Bless. Hello to Fran too!

Hi,
I have been corresponding with a number of Coggin Descendants trough John and Allyss Elizabeth Benson. Roy Coggin has asked me to extend the list back to the older John Coggin, Sr., and add all of you to this list as well, since you too, are descended from this same family. I am doing so, and am forwarding you a copy of a request I have, which was made by Nancy Goodman. She is extending an invitation for us to add our Coggin family to a web page she has created. She is also involved in some of the Rootsweb Lists for TN, and the TN Historical Society, which is an area many of our ancestors migrated to from NC.

I hope to hear from you, or at least to see that you have contacted Nancy with your family lineage. Following are some of the correspondence regarding this venture, the web site address, and a list of all the addresses I have at this time, with yours added. If you do not want to be on the list, please let me know and I will remove your name. This is not intended to be anything except a way to help ourselves and others who might be trying to find information on our family heritage.

Thank you from a very far removed, distant cousin,
Kay Cooper

Hi Nancy,

I received the e-mail from Kay Cooper regarding your web page. I would be happy to have you add my Coggin family to this web site. I mentioned to Kay that as of now I can only go back to my gg-grandfather and am still trying to find exactly where he connects to John Coggin's genealogy. I viewed the web site and hopefully am submitting the information correctly.

Burrell Coggin b. Jan.5, 1797 Montgomery Co. N.C. married Tabitha Pool b. 1802.>Jeremiah Coggin b. Sept. 6,1831 Griffin, Ga. married Mary Dickson in 1858>

Albert Sidney Coggin b. Oct. 20 1877 in Desoto Co. Ms. married Eva Clark>Sarah Louise Coggin b. January 12, 1916 married William Albert Fisher > Ann Marie Fisher(Schultz).

Hope this is what you want. I do have more but I thought what you were asking for was a direct line to my Coggin ancestor. I'll be glad when I can go back further with this line.

Hello Nancy;
I got your name and address from Roy Coggin in Newport News as somebody I should contact concerning the Coggins family history.
My grandfather was a Coggin. His name was James Goode Coggin. He and my grandmother were divorced when my mom was quite young, so I know very little about him. He died in Petersburg around 1940. The family information I have comes from some distant cousins in Southampton County, VA. Unfortunately none are working on the family history. Here is what I know up to now.
My line starts (as far as I know) with Henry Coggins, probably in Northampton County, NC. He had at least one brother named James. No idea of his wife's name. His son was named William Elijah Coggins (b. June 24, 1832, d. March 10, 1896). Possibly married to a Aisly Garriss in 1853. His son was named Samuel E. Coggin (he was the first to drop the "S"). He married Lula Bridges who died in 1936. Their son was my grandfather. There were several other children besides James Goode. There was a Rodney Myers, Moody, Johnny, Edward, Annie Mae (old maid) and Pauline (she married Guy Marshall).

On the 1850 census of Northampton County, Henry Coggins is listed as being 48. His wife was named Eliza(beth?), and there were several other children besides William (Martha and James, as well as an unnamed female aged 2).

Does any of this ring a bell or fit into your research? I hope so, but really doubt it. I hope you will add my name to the Coggin Research Team, and keep my information on file in case something comes along in the future.
Thanks for the help. I look forward to hearing from you.
Regards,
Knox Martin

III. Rebecca "Betsy " COGGIN, born about 1801 in Franklin County, NC. She married Elijah RUSHTON about 1823 in Franklin County, NC; he was born about 1801 in that same county.
NOTES FOR REBECCA: Rebecca is the great-grandmother of Doris Neely Neil of Norfolk, VA. She was born about 1801 in NC and moved with her family to TN about 1825. Rebecca married Elijah Rustin/Rushton on 14 Jan 1829 in Maury County, TN. Elijah and Rebecca had 10 children; their second child, Mary Ann Rushton, born about 1832, married William Giles Hodges in 1853 in Hickman County, TN.
William Giles and Mary Ann Rushton Hodges had nine children, eight sons and one daughter, the latter was named Margery Maud (Margery herself later added "Tabitha" to her name). After 1870, but before the Census was taken in 1880 William and Mary Ann moved their family to Montgomery County, KS. William died in Independence, KS, in 1884 and is buried in the city cemetery there. Mary Ann moved with her sons to Kansas City, MO, and died there in 1908. She is buried at Forest Hills Cemetery in Kansas City, Jackson County, MO
Margery Maude (Tabitha) Hodges, the seventh child, and only daughter of William Giles and Mary Ann Rushton Hodges, was born 31 Oct 1869 in TN. She married Arthur Douglas Neely on 15 Dec 1887 in Independence, Montgomery County, KS . They had five children, three daughters and two sons. Margery Maude and Arthur Douglas were divorced in 1906 in Independence, MO, and Margery moved with the five children to join her mother and brothers in Kansas City. Arthur Douglas disappeared; Margery died in 1908 and is buried in the same plot at Forest Hills as is her mother.
The fourth child of Arthur Douglas and Margery Maude Hodges Neely was Arthur Dorris Neely, born 8 November 1897 in Matthewson, KS. He married Anna Amelia Schneider on 16 April 1921.in Kansas City, MO . Arthur Dorris (Dode) and Anna Schneider Neely had three children: the eldest, Doris Elizabeth, was born 20 Jun 1922 in Kansas City. Margery Ann was born 13 Jan 1934 in Springfield, MO, and Arthur Dee was born 3 Dec 1935, also in Springfield.
Anna Schneider Neely died in 1974; Arthur Dorris in 1978. They are buried in Oak Lawn Cemetery at Cherokee Village, Hardy, AR.
Doris Elizabeth Neely married George Neil on 16 April 1941 in Springfield, MO. They have two children: George Randall, born 11 Apr 1948, and Peggy Ann, born 5 Feb 1950. George and Doris live in Norfolk, VA.

Nancy, I found Ann Schultz's lost ggg grandfather. His name was Jeremiah, son of John and Allyss Elizabeth. So you can delete her search and put by her name: descendent of John Coggin and Allyss Elizabeth Benson. I coordinated this with Ann.

Second item: I noticed a T. Coggins in Hendersonville.TN. Call sign: [email protected] Do you know him ? He should be a good candidate for our Coggin Research Team. Could you, would you contact him ?

Nancy, what you repeated is correct.

JohnCoggin and Allyss Benson > Jeremiah (b.1774) and Olivia Tucker > Burrell ( b.5 Jan 1797) and Tabitha Pool > Jeremiah ( b.6 Sep 1831) and Mary Dickson > Albert S. ( b.20 Oct 1877) and Eva Clark > Sarah L. ( b. 12 Jan 1916) and William L. Fisher > Ann M. Fisher and Schultz.

Does this clear it up ? Ann has the families of Burrell (1797), Jeremiah (1831), Albert S. (1877), Sarah L. (1916) and Ann Fisher Schultz in the mail for me to put in the book. I'm hoping to receive it by Wed or Thur.

Nancy, sorry about the confusion. If it was easy I don't think it would be as much fun. Perhaps I should add, Nancy, that the book you have shows Burrell b.abt 1803 instead of 5 Jan 1897.

If any one still has questions, please ask them.

Roy

Hi Roy.
I'm still kicking down here in GA. I haven't been on line in a couple of weeks for one reason or another. I have been getting some wonderful mail from the Coggin Research Team. But I have something exciting to tell you. We have a new restaurant in Canton, Georgia called O'Charley's. We had my birthday celebration there last week and it was wonderful. But the news is - The main wall behind the bar has a painting of the Canton as it used to be - the old mills - Gus Coggins rock barn for his race horses and in the middle Gus in a carriage pulled by one of his famous horses. But that is not all the walls are COVERED with pictures of the Coggins family. They all say thanks to Mr. Herbert Buffington and the Cherokee County Historical Society. I could not eat for looking at the pictures. Anyway, my good intentions don't always work out. So I am sending you Mr. Herbert Buffington's name address and phone number. You will probably get to talk to him before I do. He is a retired attorney from here. His address is 130 Muriel Street Canton, GA 30114 and his phone number is 770-479-6283. Can you tell me how to send you some information if I have it typed in Word. I don't know how to do an attachment. Talk to you soon.

Roy,
Scott had pointed out some differences in my information and yours, prior to you and I talking for the first time. I have not had a chance to check on the information, yet, but I did look at my source for the marriage of Robert Coggin and Sarah Green. The source was a book by Blanche Adams Chapman 1895, Marriages of Isle of Wight County, Virginia, 1628-1800, (originally published in Smithfield, Virginia.)
The book says G.B. 2 (I think this meant Great Book 2) p. 61. The original volume was from the state Library in Raleigh, NC, but the volume pages I have were copied by Ken Cooper in Salt Lake City, Utah.
All of the children are listed with birth dates prior to this in your book.

Scott pointed out the death dates on the two Johns. That makes sense

You had asked me about Worlinda Reeves. I believe that I typed that name into the wrong space, and I will find out where I got the name Reeves. In Douglas Slater's work, I only found the name Worlinda for Zacariah's wife, but not Reeves. I'll track down my notes and see where I found the name.

When I sent you my information, did a page of notes come through on Levina Kenneday and Bazel Burton? I have their children listed on a page of notes, but I did not put them onto the family group sheets.

My original source for Coggin information was a book, handwritten, for the most part, and copied by Mr. Douglas Slater. A lot of his information came from a Genealogist named Hobart Bartlett (who has passed away.) Mr Slater is not a Coggin descendant, but Bartlett was, and I think one of Mr. Bartlett's children lived in Salt Lake City, and was going to continue their father's work. (The name of his book was The Coggin Family of Ridgetop, Tennessee 1662 - 1988.)

I talked to Mr. Slater in 1995. His phone number at that time was (615) 851-6779.

These are some of the loose notes I had in the Slater's book:
In my notes I have Robert Coggin Sr. married to Sarah Green, d. of John and Ann Green, s of John/Jacob Green (from WFT.) and Perseverance Johnson, son of Edward Green of Great Welbraham, Cambridge, England.
Robert Jr. was married to Mary Johnson, daughter of James and Rebecca (Darden) Johnson. This information is in my notes from the phone conversation with Mr. Slater.

There was a woman living in Atlanta, that was a descendant of the 2 daughters of Tom Ryman (Steamboat Industry Giant) and Jonathan or Jordan Coggin's sons Riley and Augustus. One was Pearl Ryman, the other was Daisy R. She was a Mrs. Jones. She was in her 90's in 1995. Her address was 405 Manor Ridge Dr. Atlanta, GA 30305 (404)355-6837. I just found a note in the back of the book, Mrs. Jones was born 1-1-1899, so she very likely is no longer living. It also states that her mother was Daisy Ryman and her father was Augustus Lee Coggin, grandson of Jonathan. Jonathan's brother Jordan was the one that settled and in No. GA. (He died in LA, according to Mr. Slater.) Pearl Ryman married Raleigh Coggin, also the son of Jonathan.

You also asked about the Campbell. According to Douglas Slater, Jordan married a Campbell (he has a ? by Caroline,) a daughter of William Campbell and (?) Moss. She and Jordan lived in Smith Co, I think he means TN. He states that Smith Co. did not keep vital records at this time, and has only census records to go on for the children's ages. Robert Campbell would be the boy 10-16 years old on the 1820 census. Jordan was over 45 at that time, thus the birth date of before 1775. It goes on to talk about the girls and the fact that the 1800 census (NC) showed 1 child, and he thinks this was Mary Jane, who married Robert Dillard. Another daughter married Dick Nichol. In 1850 Robert C. was raising 3 boys named Nichol. Robert Campbell married Nancy Spencer Jones. It looks like they had 6 children and are the ancestors of the Coggin families that live in the same area today. (I have some names and a couple of addresses in the back of the book.)

There are many other Coggin's in this book. I have never taken the time to add them to my files.

I also some of the Coggin family members in the TN area. One of them sent me the copied of the book. She was not interested in the research. Her family had somehow been connected with the building of Ryman Hall (The Grand Ol' Opry House.)

Jonathan Coggin was one of the brothers that went to TN, then to Cherokee County, GA. He later went to California, where he was killed by Indians. Jordan Coggin was also in Cherokee County, where Jonathan went.

Mr Slater has many references and documentation is supposedly in his files. I think I remember him saying something about the local Historical Society, or Genealogical Society. At the time he compiled this book, he lived in Madison, TN. Nancy may be able to help us find the original files that Mr. Slater refers to throughout his references. The Robert Campbell Coggin family appears to have been prominent citizens of their community.

This has been longer than I expected it to be, so I am sending it to Nancy and Scott also. I have been adding things to it each evening for the last few days.
I hope that what I sent you was Coggin information, and not my entire backup disks. I have not taken the time to learn how to send Ged-com files, yet. I'll get there, but in the meantime, I have sent a lot of useless information to a few people (such as all my Tyler family info. to the man researching the Cotton's. Oh, well, he got just a little more than he needed.)

...Take care and let me know if there is anything else you would like to know about Mr. Slater's work.........

Knox,
Just got back from the courthouse and library in Isle of Wight Co., VA. While at the library I came across a book on Isle of Wight marriages 1628-1800 by Blanche Adams Chapman 1895. In the book was a marriage of Henry Coggan to Elizabeth Briggs on 6 Dec 1792. I had already left the courthouse so didn't get to research the names but will get back in a few days and check it out. My guess is that the Henry Coggan is your Henry Coggin's father. We need to find out which son of Robert, b.abt 1707, was the father of Henry Coggan who married Elizabeth Briggs. Has anyone checked the 1800 census to find out who is listed as Henry's father in Northampton Co., NC ? This would clear up whether or not Henry Coggan and Eliz. Briggs were his parents.
Robert b.abt 1707 had two sons, John and Robert. John had one son named John and I have no idea how many sons he had. Robert had six sons, two of which came to Franklin Co., NC, James and Robert. This leaves four or Robert's sons, Joshua, Lewis, John and William as candidates plus the one son of John.
One of the keys to this whole problem is " who is the father of Henry born in 1800 in Northampton Co., NC". Do we have a Coggin Research Team member from Northampton Co., NC ? Anyone with NC 1800 census at their finger tips that can give us an answer ? Help !!
When and if we can get an answer to the question above, I will try to solve the Isle of Wight problem (if I can).

Kay,
Just got back from Isle of Wight courthouse and library trying to reconcile the differences in birthdates for the children of Robert and Sarah Green Coggin. Couldn't find anything so would you let me know what you and Scott have. Would appreciate very much.

Also found the book by Blanche Adams Chapman. Found some info which may be of interest to Knox Martin. Sent you and Nancy a copy under separate e-mail.

Kay, am interested in Hobart Bartlett or Douglas Slater's book "The Coggin Family of Ridgetop, TN". A lady I often talk to knows, or knew, Mr. Bartlett who is a descendant of Willis Coggin who was drowned in Caney Fork River in TN. I will call Mr. Slater soon and he may know if and where a copy may be found. Mr. Bartlett has at least two daughters ( one in Salt Lake,UT and one in NY) and a son.

Thanks for the info on Sarah Green's ancestors and Mary Johnson . I entered the info in my book.

Kay, the Mrs. Jones you mentioned is the daughter of Agustus Lee "Gus" Coggin and Daisy Ryman ( dau of Green Ryman who built the Ryman Auditorium home of "Grand Ole Opry). She is the one who brought her Dad back to Canton, GA fron CO just before his death from lukemia at age 84. This is the family of Sandra Coggin Strickland (CRTeam).

Yes Kay, I got notes Levina Kennedy and Brazel Burton and their children. Thanks.

When at Courthouse I picked up the Last Will of John Green. It's hand written by some JP and hard to read but can be read. I have many wills and many deeds and many Indentures, if you want any.

Have you heard anything from Bill and Jene Benton since they moved to MO from AZ ? I think they will let us know when they get settled.

Roy

Hi Coggin gang:
The Coggin web pages have been updated with a new member as sent in by Kay Cooper:

One question I have: Are we generally in agreement that the spelling is COGGIN, without the "S"? I know when you are researching you have to look for the spelling with and without the "s", but I wanted to be sure before I remove the "s" from anybody's listing on the Table of Descendants page, in order to make it uniform........

Just saw your posting as to Coggins/Coggin spelling.
My line, which is different from most of the members of the Coggin group, spelled the name Coggins with an "s" at least up to the 1900's when my own grandfather dropped the "s". The will of his GGrandfather Henry Coggins lists all the male members of the family (including his own grandfather) as Coggins.
I have corresponded with several members of other lines that trace their line back to the above Henry Coggins (the will was from 1866) who still spell their name as Coggins. However, those of my direct line spell it Coggin. Go figure! I guess it was really up to the individual.

Coggin without the S. Yes. Leave that be. I think it is more correct--it is found that way earlier. The Lee/Itawamba Co. MS Coggin clan -- descendants of Joshua Green Coggin who was the son of Robert, Jr. who moved from Franklin Co., NC, to Maury Co., TN, preserved the name with no S, and wears it that way today. --

Mine is spelled with an S on the end. I am trying to find at what point the S was added. Some professor who E-mailed me but I lost his address. Said some of his family added the S because it sounded better.

Hi Nancy,
I dropped the "s". Sounds okay to me.
