Nancy,
I was also feeling like I needed to do something else, so I placed the following query on the genweb.forum:

<<John Coggin, 1620-1698, England-VA
Posted by Kay Cooper on October 20, 1998 at 01:58:53:
If anyone is searching for information on the descendants of John Coggin, 1620-1698, we have a web site put together by Nancy Goodman in TN. We have 34 members of The Coggin Research Team, all descendants of this ancestor. My line is through John Coggin and Allyss Elizabeth Benson. Others are through Robert and Sarah Green Coggin. Please feel free to check out the web sites and e-mail us if you have questions or need help with tying back to this family.

It can't hurt, and maybe someone else will find information they need by checking our lists.

Nancy, I see that we share these two lines in our research. I have been seeing your name on the Guill site on GenForum.

My latest Guill was Susan who m. Robert Shepard in wilson Co. 1822. She was dau. of Josiah, Sr., the son of Alexanders Sr. of Pr. Edward Co.
Robert's father was Samuel the Rev. War Patriot in Wilson Co.
I am happy to be networking on both these families.

Hi Pat,
We corresponded back in April. Since then I have really found a lot of the Coggin Descendants, thus the Coggin Research Team became a reality, based on my original list of Coggin's on the Internet, and Nancy Goodman's expertise at creating Web pages.

One of the people that found me was Roy Coggin. He has worked on his Coggin line for many years, and he has found our John Coggin, married to Allyss, to be the son of William Coggin, the brother of Robert Sr, married to Sarah Green. Originally we were just going to have all of the Coggin Research Team tie back to John and Allyss, but Roy suggested going back further, because he had some contacts that could definitely connect to one of the Robert's, but not directly to John and Allyss. I am not sure what additional work you have done to tie our line back to Robert or William, but I think Roy is probably accurate. You will want to contact him and compare notes. He has a book that he has done which is of course his direct descent. It has lots of the other branches in it and he is adding to it for an updated version.

I do not know if you copied the list of descendants, but I am adding it for you after my closing. I hope to hear from you soon. By the way, how did you find us? I was wondering if my genforum query was effective.

Thanks, and welcome to the team!

Hello Pat, my name is Roy J. Coggin and I live at 148 Towne Square Drive, Newport News, VA 23607-1508. I understand you are a descendant of Sarah Coggin and Sherwood Cannaday ( Kenneday ). I know very little about the descendants of Sarah and Sherwood but do know about Sarah and her ancestors. I will give you a rundown on Sarah ancestors as I believe them to be, as follows:

Dr. John Coggin came to Virginia about 1640/45 ( possibly as late as the early 1650s) and married Frances Bland, where and when unknown, and had a son named John Jr. either before, during or shortly after, his arrival in the new world. The son John Jr. married the daughter of John Moore and they had three sons and two daughters. The oldest son left this country at an early age never to return. Records for the other sons are traceable. William, I believe, married Elizabeth Price and had one son named John, who is your ancestor. Robert, the third son, also married and had children.

John, your ancestor, married Ann Powell in Isle of Wight Co. VA and they had seven children ( some in VA and some in NC ) where he moved from VA. Ann died in NC about 1758/60 and John then married your gggg (I believe) grandmother, Allyss Elizabeth Benson (dau. of widow Sarah Benson). Your ggg-grandmother, Sarah, was the second of John and Allyss' twelve children ( eight sons and four daughters) born 24 Feb 1764.

Pat, I also have the names and birthdates of Sarah and Sherwood twelve children, if you would like them. That's all I have on this family.

To simplify your line it would read: John Coggin and Frances Bland > John Coggin, Jr. and (---)Moore > William Coggin and Elizabeth Price > John Coggin and Allyss Elizabeth Benson > Sarah Coggin and Sherwood Kenneday > etc. You have it from there. Any questions so far ??

I also have a book "The Descendants of Coggin, John 1620-1698". The book is appx. 130 pages, 13 Chapters, Table of Contents and Index of Names. My break even price is $20 including postage. Let me know if you want a copy ( this price does not include pictures).

Pat, welcome to the Coggin Research Team.

Your new distant cousin,
Roy

Nancy,
I just got a note (part of which is after the closing of this note,) from Ann Sloan, descendant of Martha Coggin and Samuel T. Clemmons. She would like to join the Team. Her address is:
Sloan, Anne
E-mail Address(es): asloan@a1.mtsu.edu
Notes: Martha Coggin and Samuel Thompson Clemmons
Her line is listed below within her note.

Roy,
She was asking about the Powell's. I have 2 Ann Powell's. Is that correct? Was John Coggin, son of Robert Sr., also married to an Ann Powell, or is this left over from my old notes and I haven't cleaned things up in the computer?
I have sent Ann an updated list of all the members and marked some of the ones that were also descendants of Martha Coggin. She needs a name for the wife of Ethelred SR.
This list is sure growing fast!
Take care and God Bless,
Kay

From Ann:
Just discovered your web pages. Thanks for supplying John's first wife's name. I have been searching for it. Can I join in.
My line is:
Samuel Thompson Clemmons and Martha Coggins
Etheldred Clemmons, Sr. and Unknown wife
Etheldred Clemmons, Jr. and Irene Thornton
Joseph N. Holloway and Nancy Elizabeth Tennessee Clemmons
Henry C. Sloan and Effie Carson Holloway
Eugene H. Sloan and Lillian White
Anne T. Sloan

FYI there is a Clemmons family reunion every year in Lebanon, Wilson Co., TN around the July 4th. If any of the Coggins-Clemmons are interested and don't know about this, I will be glad to share info.

My next question is who are the Powells?

Nancy, I am trying to figure out how to put the Coggin information on my page. Well, first of all, I can't even get FTM to place the information about the Coggin web site properly. But that aside, here is what I can do, apparently:

I already have links to my family tree (Internetree); to a Descendancy Chart of Charlton Shuler; and to a Genealogy Report on the Neils (both of the latter being George's side). I can place another report or two; I can put a "book" in, also. But whatever I want to add must first be added to my data base and the report formed from that data. In other words, I cannot just add a copy of the Coggin Table 1 to my web site. I am not very knowledgeable about these things....perhaps you can think of a way this could work.....let me know. CC: clemmot@carsondesign.com (Mike Clemmons), ASLOAN@a1.mtsu.edu (Anne T. Sloan)

Thanks to my cousin Ann Sloan for putting me onto your website. We are descendents of Samuel Thompson Clemmons, and Martha Coggin. We thought Martha's mother was Elizabeth Benson, so were glad to get the right scoop on Ann Powell. Thanks for the research!!.

We continue to seek information on Thompson Clemmons' parents, so if you ever find anything here, would appreciate knowing about it.

I saw Mike Clemmons' name on your list of contacts. Ann Sloan, Mike, and I are descended from Thompson and Martha Clemmons through their son Etheldred, Sr. From there, we descend from different offspring. However, I'm also descended through Thompson & Martha's daughter Priscilla.

I am doubly interested in the history of John Coggin, because I am descended through Martha AND Nancy. Follow this story:

Samuel Thompson Clemmons and Martha Coggin had 11 children. Their son Etheldred (as mentioned above) had 8 children. His son James married Nancy Castlemen (another name I saw in your information), they had 6 children, then Nancy died in March 1850. Poor James was left a widower with a pasel of kids, all under 10 years old.

Meanwhile-Martha's sister, Nancy Coggin is marrying James Merritt and having their family. Their son, Obediah marries his first cousin - Priscilla <Thompson Clemmons/Martha Coggin>. Among the children of Obediah and Priscilla was Elizabeth (Betsy) Merritt.

Betsy Merritt knows poor ole widower James who needs a mama for his kids - and they do have a lot in common - especially their greatgrandfather!!!!!
So within 6 months of Nancy's death, on August 27, 1850 Betsy married James.
This really narrowed down family history research!!!

James and Betsy had 5 children:
1. Obediah Merritt Clemmons
2. George W. Clemon
3. Martha Frances Clemmons
4. Etheldred W. Clemmons
5. Priscilla Clemmons

In 1886 Etheldred Clemmons and George W. Clemmons left Wilson County for Texas. Both were married and had children. Their widowed mother, Betsy, went with them. Somewhere in the Dallas area several of the children came down with measles, and mother Betsy became ill. Etheldred, his wife, and some of the children traveled on to McLennan County, while George remained in the Dallas area with the sick children and mother. Betsy died and is buried somewhere in Dallas. I've been told it was an old Masonic Cemetery, and that's on my list to check out. It is believed that some relatives lived in the Dallas area, and George's family stayed with them.

George and the rest of the family traveled on to McLennan County, settling west of Waco near McGregor, while Etheldred and his family settled in neighboring Coryell County near Gatesville. It is important to note that at this time Etheldred was known as Dred, and both he and George dropped the second "M", changing their name to Clemons. My uncle told me they were too poor to afford the second M.

A cousin from Dred's family has done extensive work on his family and I did George's family history. Only in the last five-seven years did the Texas Clemons' find their CLEMMONS relatives in Lebanon, TN. Sammie Jo Skinner was the first to uncover this information, finding Thelma Landrum's book "Samuel Thompson Clemmons and His Descendents" at LDS/Salt Lake City.

I have entered Thelma's 1981 book into Family Tree Maker and am now in the process of bringing it up to date. Recently, Ann Sloan was contacted by a relative doing research in Lebanon on the Clemmons family. The family is the undocumented family of Thompson and Martha's daughter Nancy Clemmons Edwards. The irony of finding this family history is to realize the Edwards family relocated to McLennan County, TX in the 1850s and never discovered their Clemons relatives who lived, literally down the road. Additionally, Wendell and Linda Edwards live less than an hour from me.

I took the Genealogy Report off my FTM page because I found errors that needed to be corrected. I'm also entering the Edwards family, as well as Mike Clemmons' research on his family. I will let you know when I post it again. I have over 6,000 names entered in the FTM file. I'll be happy to share any of my information.

I would appreciate getting the John Coggin/Ann Moore history and anything on James Merritt's family. I think the Merritts in McLennan County, TX are part of this family, because I've always been told we were related, but never knew how. Until recently, there was a Allison-Clemons-Merritt Reunion in McGregor. One story my uncle told was how a Merritt went to fetch my grandmother when she and my grandfather eloped (she was 13 years old).

I guess this makes me

ITEMS SOMEWHAT RELATED, CAN YOU HELP:

Betsy Merritt Clemmons married George Pollard after James Clemmons died. It is reasonable to believe he died by 1886 (or divorced), because he did not travel to Texas with the family. Betsy's son George W. Clemmons (my great grandfather) married Florence Pollard. It is unknown if there is a connection. I'm looking for anything on the Pollard family, probably from Wilson County. (Mary Florence Pollard, born January 17, 1856, Wilson Co., TN)

William Harris Clemons (my grandfather) married Myrtle Paralee Creek from Bonham, TX. Her parents were Thomas Critton Creek and Mary Frances Jones.

Mary Frances was born in 1860 in Rutherford County, TN. Her parents were Jesse Jones and Melissa Sullivan. Can you direct me to research on Jones and Sullivan? I've not yet contacted vital records in Murfreesboro.

Thomas Critton Creek was a widower with a small child, Maude, when he married Mary Frances Jones. Absolutely nothing is known about him, except maybe he came from Kentucky. Have you ever run across anything that would relate to him? He was born about 1862.

Etheldred Clemmons, Sr. was married in North Carolina and moved with the family to Wilson County in 1805. Does anyone have the name of his spouse?

Well, this has gone on much longer than I expected -- hope you can make some sense out of it. Will be happy to hear from you or any others about "our family"

Dear Roy,
I was hoping you may have some information on a Owen Coggin, born ca. 1800 in NC, married 27 mar 1827 in Burke Co., NC to Elvira Mahone, I last find him on the 1860 census in Washington Co., TN, so I don't know when or where he died. He moved from Burke Co. to Washington Co., TN in about 1841. Their children were: William 1828, Joshua 1833, Hannah E. 1835, Jesse M. 1836, Nancy M. 13 Feb 1838, James Waitsell 1843 and Mary E. 1847. I have a little more information on Williams descendants, and whould gladly share what little I have. Please tell me the names of Owen parents, if you can. I would really appreciate it.

Yours truly,
Jack McClintic

Hi Anne and Elaine,
Anne, I need your address for the book. The only copy I have left has pictures (about 25) and the cost is $35. I will be getting more books about the end of the week, with and without pictures ($20 and $35), if you would like to wait.

Elaine, the book I am describing is a book on the Coggin Family that goes back to the arrival of John Coggin (Cogan) in the new world, America. And specifically to Charles City Co. VA, where he settled. And of John Jr., his son, and their descendants, Isle of Wight VA. Would you like a copy ?? If so, let me know and with or without pictures and you mailing addess. I should explain that I am not a real live genealogist and do this only as hobby (an avid hobbiest, I might add).

Anne and Elaine, glad to have you on the Team. I am a retired Pilot from the Air Force. Retired for 26+ years, settled in CA after retirement (10 years, 4 actve duty 6 retired), 13 years in NC, my home state, and 7 years in VA my wifes home.

Hope to hear from you soon. Your distant but interested cousin,

> My Coggin is Chaney, who married Isham Reaves in NC. All I know about her is what I found in the family Bible. Her children were William, Lucinda, and Chaney, my gggrandmother. She was born in NC 12 Dec 1812. As she was Chaney Coggin Reaves third child, I would think that the Chaney first mentioned would have been born abt.1790 or so.
Chaney C. Reaves died after the birth of her dau, Chaney. Isham moved to Bedford Co Tn and married Rachel Morgan. I know nothing of the parentage of Chaney and have not found a marriage record. I suspect that she is from a Rutherford, Montgomery or Guildford family,
but that is a guess on my part.
There is an old letter from a Dorcas Coggin in which she refers to "Uncle Isham and Uncle Tobias" who moved to Bedford Co TN and that is what I base my guess upon.
I would greatly appreciate any help or direction.
Thanks for your reply.

Hi Mike,

Couldn't remember if I wrote and told you I got the Clemmons text file okay, and it worked out fine.....and I do appreciate it.......

I have been extracting Holloway info out of various text files I have on my computer for a Holloway web page.....mostly queries, but I am including a short bit of the file as pertains to Holloway......

Do you think there is any way we could (or should) post more of the info from the book on a Clemmons web page......what about the copyright, or do you know?

I knew Thelma Landrum (not in person, but by letters, correspondence and phone conversations) before she died, but I didn't know if there would be any way we could use the info she put into the book......

I know we could put our various lines that we contributed without any problem, but just thought I would throw the question over to you and see what you think about it......

I would however, hesitate to post any info on anyone still living.........I deleted some info from what I posted on the Holloway page, so as not to show living persons....

If you also have the issues she did for the Clemmons reunion, you may have a copy of the Goodman file I sent her on Stephen Goodman and Malinda Clemmons line......that's where my husband descends.....

I have the copy of what I sent her, and she sent me the other issues, but never got around to sending me that one...

thanks again, if belatedly......

Pat,
Back in April I received an Email from you regarding Sherwood Cannaday and his siblings. I have you listed in my notes as a possible descendant of the Noggin family. I was wondering if you have been able to connect back to the Coggin ancestors, or were you just seeking information on someone who was related to Sherwood Sr., who married Sarah Coggin.

Several of us in the Coggin line, have our names listed on a web page as fellow researchers. You might like to check the sites and if you have a question that connects to the Coggin's, someone might be able to help you. There are a couple of members that connect to Sarah and Sherwood. You can get there addresses from the pages and contact them to see if they might have other Cannaday information.

Please check the sites, contact us if we can help, and if you can connect, send us your lineage back as far as you know and we will add you to the list. Roy Coggin is the best source of information on our Coggin ancestors. Nancy Goodman has put together the Web sites, and I am just here as an instigator, investigator, promoter and enthusiastic supporter of fellow "cousins." I had the original list of fellow Coggin Researchers and sent out a note to everyone as "The Coggin Research Team." The term has stuck, and we have been helpful to several others.

Good Luck in your searching the "Roots." I hope to hear from you soon.

Kay,
I recently received a list of descendants of John Coggin and Ann Powell and Allyss Elizabeth Benson.
John who died 26 Jan 1793 in Davidson Co., NC, was the son of William Coggin of Isle of Wight Co., VA, the grandson of John Coggin, Jr. and the great grandson of Dr. John Coggin (Cogan) of Isle of Wight Co. and Charles City Co., VA and Bristol, England.

This explanation is for the benefit of Tom and John Knight. Kay correct me if I am wrong, but a Junior doesn't follow a father who doesn't have the same name. Tom and John, I don't mean to be nit-picking, but do not believe John who died in 1793 to be a Junior.

Glad to meet you, Tom and John Knight. Got the attachment Coggin-k-rtf but couldn't read the other attch. CogginRe.mim

Cousin way down the road,
Roy

Tom,
You asked if I had any info on Sarah (Sally) Coggin who married Mark Merritt. In your msg dated 12/8/98 6:54:00 AM EST, you gave the lineage of Mark Merritt down to the Knight's. Go back to the introduction of Sarah (Sally) Coggin m. in 1797 in NC to Mark Merritt.

Her father was James Coggin who came from Isle of Wight Co., VA with his brother Robert around 1750 to Franklin Co., NC. They were joined later by their brother, Joshua Coggin. James's father was Robert Coggin, Jr. and his mother was Mary Johnson. Robert Coggin, Jr's. father was Robert Coggin b. abt 1685 and his mother was Sarah D. Green. Robert Coggin's father was John Coggin, Jr. son of Dr. John Coggin (Cogan) and Frances Bland of London, Eng.

Tom,
you and John have a cousin, Patricia McClure (by marriage) in Portland, OR whose call sign is bucca@prodigy.net Since you share the same call sign (prodigy.net) thought you might know about each other.

Lots of luck on your genealogy,

Roy,
Well, hopefully, I have it correct now. A sample is included for your review. My documentation is zero on the COGGIN ancestry except for email and information from John B. KNIGHT. Right now, I can't tell you where I got the "Jr." for the John Coggin who married Ann POWELL. I understand that you are doing a book, so I will have to get a copy if you sell them.

I found the URL for the attached "Web Site for Confederate Pensioners" on one of the lists that I subscribe to. The "sample" that is available on the web page is for William Ivy COGGINS.
I have no idea who he was but he filed for a pension in Ellis County, TX. The record show that he was a resident of the county for 42 years.

A QUESTION: Do you have any information on the Sarah (Sally) COGGIN who married Mark Merritt as shown in the following listing? I'm sure that John B. KNIGHT would like to know and I surely would.
Too long already. Nice to meet you, Cousin.
