Hi Goodmans,
My query is in relation to a query I got from someone in TN by e-mail. His
name was GOODMAN. He was also African-Am, as I am. Because I was in a chat
room I did not send a reply right away. When I went back the mail had been
erased.
Would you please check around to see if anybody in your family group
might know this individual. My GOODMAN'S are from Alabama.
Thank you for any help that you can provide.

Genny,
I am researching my TN/KY Goodman family. I found my gggrandfather, Lemuel
on the 1836 and 1838 Wayne Co. Tax Lists as well as on the 1840 Wayne Co.
Census, then into Graves Co KY in 1850. From 1850 on I have pretty well
documented him and his family. BUT....I can't seem to find out anything about
them in TN.
On the 1836 Wayne Co. Tax List he was listed under (indented in) Abijah,
no acreage, each 1 white male. Also found Lemuel only listed as GOODMON on
1838 Tax List, still no acreage, listed as one white male. On the 1840 Wayne
Co. TN Census I found Lemuel on p. 69, and a Jesse on pg. 76. (I believe
there is a connection between the two though I have nothing to substantiate
that except that they were close in proximity and Lemuel's grandson was named
Jesse.)
... About the only source I have is some census info in Vero Beach and the LDS library in Palm City. Although I do find quite a bit on the internet... real substantial leads are far and few in between and even then I can't actually see the source...usually what someone tells me. Can you give me any suggestions as to what I should be looking for and where?
I really appreciate your time and help. Thanks.

Subject: Tennessee GOODMANs
Anyone in the GOODMAN group have any connections?
I found an ABIJAH and LEMUEL GOODMAN on 1836 Wayne Co TN Tax List, Civil District #1. Lemuel is my gggrandfather, but I do not know who Abijah (or Abisha) is. Found LEMUEL GOODMAN again on the 1838 Wayne Co. TN Tax List, but no ABIJAH GOODMAN listed.
But I found an ABISHA (very similar to ABIJAH) GOODMAN on the 1840 Maury
Co Census, on the same page as OVERTON GOODMAN and WILLIAM GOODMAN. Does
anyone know anything about these families? Seems like I have seen reference
to OVERTON GOODMAN on the GOODMAN queries in the past.
Also found LEMUEL GOODMAN and JESSE GOODMAN on 1840 Wayne Co. Census.
I found on the 1830 Wayne Co TN Census a FLEMMING GOODMAN, JOHN GOODMAN and
S.C. GOODMAN. I wonder if there is a connection here to my known Wayne Co
TN LEMUEL GOODMAN that I found in Wayne Co in 1840?
I am pretty sure Lemuel had a brother named ERVIN GOODMAN, and some kind of connection to a HOSEA GOODMAN, HEZEKIAH GOODMAN, THOMAS GOODMAN, and a JAMES W. GOODMAN.
Many of my GOODMAN family wound up in Graves, Ballard, Livingston, and Marshall Counties in KY. In KY I know they married into the RUST, DREW, SMITH, PAGE, WARD and EWING and HOOKS families.
Any help will be greatly appreciated. I'm pretty much at a deadend until
I come up with some new leads.

There are some TN puzzles I have been having problems with, and I would
greatly appreciate if anyone can help.
1).Email: RonGoodman@aol.com
In "Tennesssee Tidbits, 1778-1914, Vol 1", compiled by Marjorie Hood Fischer,
is a reference on page 146 to the following: "August 1790 Court: Robt. and
Amos GOODMAN, children of John GOODMAN, ordered committed to the care of
John RICHARDSON until further orders. Stephen and Sarah and Rachel GOODMAN
were committed to the care of Jos. RICHARDSON aforesaid. (Greene, TN Co Court
Minutes #/170)."
Since "aforesaid" is mentioned, I would like to find out if a copy of the
complete document is available, as it might provide more detail.
In 1832, in Greene Co, TN, Rachel GOODMAN married Simpson DOUGHTRY. ??
If the Amos GOODMAN above was 8 years old in 1790, that would match the 1782
birth year of my ancestor Amos GOODMAN, who married first to Sarah CONWAY,
then second to Mourning JONES. I have never been able to clearly identify
Amos's siblings or mother, "Edith".
2). Email:
RonGoodman@aol.com
My ancestor, Amos GOODMAN, married Sarah CONWAY on Aug 29, 1801 in Blount
Co, TN, with Thomas CONWAY as 'Security'.
Was Thomas CONWAY perhaps her brother, or her father? In Greene Co, TN, on
Apr 11, 1792, Thomas CONWAY, Sen. married Nancy RUTON (RECTOR).
'Security' was Thomas CONWAY, Jr. This appears to be a second marriage, as
in Greene Co, TN on Feb 9, 1792, Thomas CONWAY married Susanna CONWAY, 'Security'
was Alex COLTON (CUTTAN?). I think this was probably Sarah CONWAY's brother,
by Thomas CONWAY, Sr.'s first marriage. I think this Conway family may be
related somehow to the Conway family that married into the TALLIAFERRO family
of Virginia, but I am not sure.

The Ansel GOODMAN, whose will was filed in 1841 in Wilson Co, TN, (will book-
#135) may be the same Ansel GOODMAN who filed a Rev War pension claim in
1832 in Russell Co, Kentucky. I have a full copy of that application and
attachments from the National Archives. He was 80 years old in 1832, best
of his recollection, so he would have been about 89 years old in 1841. If
this Ansel GOODMAN was also the father of Amos GOODMAN, who came to another
son or daughter's home back to TN to die, then more family details may be
in the will. I would like to get a full copy it.

Hi Nancy,
I am looking for Goodman's from TN.
I am looking for the parents of my great-grandfather, James Hamilton GOODMAN,
born 24 Apr 1849 in Hunt County, TX (this according to JH's death record
in Nacagodoches County, TX) married 26 May 1872 to Mary Elizabeth HINCKLEY,
and died 23 Jan 1943 in Douglass, Texas at age 93.
James Hamilton Goodman's father is listed in the official death record as James Goodman from TN. No mention is made of the mother's name.
I have been unable to find (so far) any record of the birth in Hunt County, TX. Verbal family history is that the family moved from the Hamilton County of TN and that is where the "Hamilton" in JH's hame came from.
Any information you might have would be greatly appreciated.

From: khaden@mindspring.com (Kay

Dear Nancy,
I have interests in Tennessee on both sides of the family:
My ggg grandfather, Ephraim Flor Hubber COMSTOCK, son of William COMSTOCK
and Winnie Ann HARDIN, was born 1794 near Hardinsburg, KY, and died 20 December
1847, location unknown.
He married Nancy GOODMAN in Maury County, TN, 14 Oct 1823. She was his
3rd wife. According to family tradition, Nancy was half Indian, probably
Choctaw. Their children included his two,
Dorcus COMSTOCK
Napoleon Bonaparte COMSTOCK,
from the earlier marriages and
Caroline COMSTOCK,
Hugh Bonaparte COMSTOCK,
Leander Brown COMSTOCK,
William Decatur COMSTOCK,
Warren Harris COMSTOCK,
James Irving COMSTOCK,
Elijah Thomas COMSTOCK(Tom - my gg grandfather), and Harry Alexander
COMSTOCK.
Most if not all the children were born in Tennessee, either Maury County
or possibly Perry County.
Nancy GOODMAN may have been born in Graves County, KY; she died 24 May 1855,
location unknown.
Their children migrated to Missouri, then Kansas, Arkansas, etc.
Does anyone share this story?
Does anyone have any connections to GOODMAN in Maury County?
Anyone from Tennessee know the likelihood of her Indian heritage?
Any advice on how to pursue my research?
Also researching PIPPIN in Jackson County, TN.
Kinchen "Kinch" PIPPIN born 10 Oct 1866, died 18 Oct 1899, married Geneva
Dell DENNIS 23 Dec 1884. She was born 27 May 1871 and died 11 Mar 1906. All
events believed to have happened in Jackson County.
His parents were Andrew PIPPIN and Mary GOOLSBY;
hers were Leroy DENNIS and Mary Ann BEAN.
Kinch & Geneva were my husband's great grandparents. Their children were
Delia PIPPIN,
Hattie PIPPIN,
Etta PIPPIN,
James Frank PIPPIN,
Ova PIPPIN,
Andy PIPPIN,
Roxie PIPPIN.
James Frank PIPPIN, my husband's grandfather, always claimed to be a quarter
Cherokee. Will be happy to share information on this family.

Seek info re: Barren Co, KY GOODMAN fam.John GOODMAN b. ca 1751 mar Jane
LOWERY/LAURIE during Rev war in VA. Jane, b.1761VA d.1848 Dubois Co IN. She
had 130 linear descendants when she died; I only know a few; have proven
she had at least two children.CHILDREN:
1).My anc Mary GOODMAN born 1795,KY ( prob Barren CoKY) mar 1811 Uriah HART,
her father giving consent. Uriah & Mary Hart had 2 CH:
Biram HART, no known inf;
John HART who mar Mary WOOLDRIDGE; d.1899 Grayson CoKY.
Uriah And Mary HART in Crawford CoIN by 1820. Mary GOODMAN HART mar(2) Elijah
WEATHERS 1823 Crawford Co IN. Elijah & Mary Goodman Hart both died late
1830's Dubois Co IN.
2). Mary had a bro Benjamin Talbert "Bird" GOODMAN b. 1802, Barren Co KY,
a statesman, senator and Christian Minister. A very popular person. He married
twice; had five children; died Apr1874 Dubois CoIN.
I believe they also had these CHILDREN:
3). John Lowery GOODMAN b.1796 KY mar Amilla HULEN 1823/4 Daviess CoIN.
4). I believe another ch ild is George GOODMAN b.1781 bapt. 1784 by Wm DOUGLAS
in the Douglas Register, listing his parents as Jo GOODMAN and Jean LAURIE
of Goochland CoVA.
George GOODMAN b. ca 1782 VA mar Elizabeth/Rhoda FLIPPIN in Barren CoKY.
5). I believe another is Jesse GOODMAN who married Rhoda/Elizbeth FLIPPIN
in Barren Co, KY.
These two may or may not be brothers; their spouses are definitely sisters.
The place, name and age match that of the George GOODMAN in the Douglas Register.
So, I think these two are also children of John and Jane LOWERY GOODMAN.
I think my John and Jane LOWERY GOODMAN are the ones in the Douglas Register.
Jane LOWERY GOODMAN b 1761 d 1848, was member of the Church of England in
youth, member of Baptist church while in KY and a member of the Christian
Church when they moved to IN (per obit). This corresponds with inf ormation
that I have about the GOODMAN fam of Barren Co KY as being members of the
Baptist church in that area

GOODMAN, MacDONALD, ALLEN:
Subj: Goodmans in Tennessee Date: 97-06-04
From:

(Bobby Goodman)
My great-great-great-grandfather William GOODMAN married Dorothy MacDONALD
ALLEN (widow of Capt. ALLEN) in NC (about 1810?) and moved to Greene Co TN.
My great-great-grandfather Robert McAlpin GOODMAN was born there in 1820,
and his mother Dorothy died there in 1825.
William GOODMAN and surviving family moved to Augusta GA after that.
Robert M. GOODMAN eventually moved to Marietta GA where he was a newspaperman.
We know a good bit about our direct line of ancestry since then, but know
nothing beyond the above about William and Dorothy except the names of their
children. Please drop me a line if you are aware of any possible tie-ins
with your research.
Thanks, Robert McAlpin Goodman IV

I am seeking any information on brothers AARON GOODMAN and THOMAS GOODMAN
who went to Tennessee from Cabarrus Co., North Carolina sometime between
approx. l800 and the Civil War (no county known). Both were sons of HIRAM
R. GOODMAN and his first wife (unknown). HIRAM R. GOODMAN born l788 in Pulaski
Co., Va.>Carrol Co., Va.>Cabarrus Co., No. Carolina>Harris Co.,
Georgia where he died l862. Aaron and Thomas Goodman were the only two
of thirteen children of Hiram that removed to Tennessee.

1. Jacob Goodman of Washington County, Virginia m. Elizabeth, also of
Washington County.
2. They had a son Philip born abt 1775 in Washington Co., VA who married
Elizabeth Pitcher. They had 10 or 11 children:
1. Susanna Goodman b. 1794 m. David Harrington
2. Daniel Goodman b. abt 1800 m. Elizabeth Clinglesmith (sister of my direct
ancestress)
3. Thomas Goodman born 28 Dec 1802 in Hardin Co., KY m. Mary "Polly" Klinglesmith
b. 1808 in Howevalley, Hardin Co., KY. (These are my direct ancestors)
4. Dr. James S. Goodman b 28 Mar 1805 m. Palmira Haycraft
5. William R. Goodman
6. Polly Goodman m. John Harrington (brother of David above in #1)
7. Abnor Goodman
8. Somira Goodman
9. Manderville Goodman
10. Malora Goodman b. 1810 in Madison Co., KY m. David Stiles, Jr. b. 14
Feb 1807 in Morristown, New Jersey.
???11. Vianna Goodman b. 1 Apr 1827 in Hardin Co., Ky m. John Calvin, Jr.
Vianna could have been their daughter born when Elizabeth was abt 47. My
grandmother had my Uncle Jack at age 46. My 92 year old cousin, Mattye Wilson
Williams has Vianna in this family.
Thomas Goodman and Mary "Polly" Klinglesmith had Susan Thomas Goodman. Thomas
died before Susan was born and she was raised by his brother James. Mary
"Polly" died in Dodd City, Fannin Co., Texas in 1891. I don't know whether
or not she remarried.
Susan is my gggrandmother and I was named Sue for her. She was called Sue.
Her husband Joseph Wilson died at the age of 43 following his wife's death.
He never recovered from losing her in childbirth (prematurely brought on
by a fall) and the youngest 10 children were raised by relatives.
My Wilsons or Goodmans had an inheritence of some sort in Leeds and it was
a big deal in the 1930s or 40s. I was born in 45 and don't know the details,
but it had something to do with proving the name of my gggrandmother Susan
Thomas Goodman. At the time, her name was only known as Sue Goodman Wilson
(I am named for her). It wasn't proved in time and the inheritence was lost.
This is the story of my family throughout all the research that I've done.
(Lots of lost fortunes) At least my family has kept rising to the occasion,
even if only to lose and start over
Maybe this information will be more helpful than the last I sent. At least
it is more accurate.
Sue
