Subject: OZMENTS/OSMENTS OF WILSON COUNTY, TN AND OTHER COUNTIES IN TN
I am interested in all Ozment/Osment names in the state of Tennessee, no matter what year and your connections.
I am willing to share.
My third great grandparents were Cameron "Cam" Ozment and Sofronia Catherine Ozment [she went by her middle name for some reason]. He was b abt 1812 in North Carolina and she was b 1819 in Tennessee.[Her father was Jonathan Ozment b abt 1776 in Maryland]. They are both buried in the Osment Cemetery 3 miles south of Lebanon, Wilson County, Tn.
Their son James Harrison Ozment [went by Harrison] was my 2nd great grandfather and he was b in Lebanon in 1844. He was married to Margaret "Maggie" Ann Grisham and their son was Walter L. Ozment, my great grandfather who was b in Lebanon in 1869. All info is appreciated and all email will be responded to.
Thanks.

Hi Lon,
I think we have 'talked' before, but don't remember if it was on Osment or on Chandler/Eddings lines in Wilson County...I don't have a lot of info on my husband's Ozment line and none on the names above...however, I have been in contact with Dwight Ozment on this line and I think he has more info that may be of help.

I will copy the last note I had from him at the bottom, plus send him a copy of your note....maybe together we can all come up with something on the Osment/Ozments in Wilson county.

Mary Jane Ozment, child of Richard Ozment and I think Rebecca "Betty" Chandler (note--this should say EDDINGS, NOT CHANDLER) (don't have my notes in front of me) married James Allen Lane....they were all in Wilson County....James Allen Lane's daughter Martha Lane married William S. Goodman....these are my husband's great-grandparents.

Dear Nancy,
Do you have access to early Tax Lists for Wilson Co., TN. If so, will you look up following:

Richard D. and Elizabeth LeCompte OZMENT. Not sure of exact date, but believe it is probably 1820-1830. If this is the same Richard who moved to Wilson Co., TN from Guilford Co., NC about that time, he may be my 4th Great Grandfather . Just received this lead from John A. Ozment, Heywood, CA .
I realize you probably have more look-ups than you want, but I would greatly appreciate your help. If you do not have the time, please advise a website or other lead so that I can do the research.
You should have my FGS for Richard OZMENT which I snailmailed to you in Nov. 1997.

Thanks for your help. Best wishes,

Dear Nancy and Lon,
Re: the message 9/20/98 with my last note to Nancy attached -

Nancy wrote to Lon (third paragraph) that "Mary Jane Ozment, child of Richard Ozment and I think Rebecca "Betty"Chandler (NOTE:she was Eddings, not Chandler) (don't have my notes in front of me) married James Allen Lane......"
According to my records, Rebecca "Becky" CHANDLER married, in Wilkes Co., NC (date unknown) , William EDDINS/EDDINGS (b. April 21, 1758, Culpeper Co., VA). Rebecca CHANDLER's parents were Robert and Partheney CHANDLER of Wilkes Co., NC. William's parents were Abraham EDDINS/EDDINGS of Spotsylvania Co., VA. and Catherine TOWLES of Middlesex Co., VA.
I don't know the parentage of Mary Jane Ozment (could be Richard Ozment, but WHICH Richard?).
Also, I do not have any information on James Allen LANE, Martha LANE, or William S. GOODMAN. Please enlighten me, Nancy.
Still have not been able to locate the 1820-1830 Tax Lists for Wilson Co., TN. Any suggestions? I believe those records can help to narrow the search as it pertains to my Richard Ozment. I am still trying to prove the connection between Richard and Elizabeth LeCompte OZMENT and Howard OZMENT, my third great grandfather.
Lon, Evelyn Thoes and I have been researching the Cameron "Cam" and Sofronia Catherine OZMENT lines for some time now, and I believe we can be fairly certain that the line is connected up to Jonathan (Safronia Catherine Ozment's father) and Sarah Neatherey OZMENT. Beyond that it is only assumption (and you know what they say about "assume"!).
I believe our Ozment branch is connected to the John OSMENT (and possibly OSMOND) of England, but we need to locate the records (family Bible, court document, or other legal documents) that will varify and complete this puzzle.
Let me hear from both of you "kin folks". Critique builds character and , as a cowboy sage once said "Good judgement comes from experience, and a lotta' that comes from bad judgement!" Best wishes,

Nancy,
Thanks for the Chandler/Eddins/ Ozment/Lane/Goodman update. The Richard OZMENT/OSMENT who married Rebecca EDDINS is still a mystery. Do you know who Richard's parents were?

Dear Nancy,
Disregard my question about the parents of Richard OZMENT who married Rebecca EDDINS. I went back through my WFT and found the answer (I should have looked there first, I guess).
That is Richard S. OZMENT and his parents were James Henry and Martha (Arden/Ardent) OZMENT.*(See posting below for correction)
Stay in touch. We will connect all of those Ozments some day. Hope I live long enough to see it happen. I turn 65 on Wednesday, September 23.
Best wishes,

Dear Nancy,
An old cowboy sage once said "The easiest way to eat crow is while it's still warm. The colder it gets, the harder it is to swaller".
I made a mistake in the message I sent to you 0n 9/21/98 re: Richard OZMENT who married Rebecca EDDINS. After doing a little more research and going to your EDDINS FAMILY page, I realized that this was Richard D. OZMENT (not Richard "S").
  * correction: His parents were John OZMENT (b. abt. 1763, d. after October 04, 1842 in Wilson Co., TN) and Unknown (not James Henry and Martha Arden Ozment as I reported).
The confusion came about as a result of three sources not agreeing.
There appears to be some difference in the middle initial depending on which source you consult, but I believe the concensus is "D" (and I hope some Ozment researcher out there can advise what the initial "D" stands for).

Richard D. OZMENT was born in Guilford Co., NC in 1800, and died April 13, 1866 in Saline Co., IL. He is buried in the Moore Vinson Cemetery, west of Harrisburg, IL.
I hope this clarifies THIS Richard's connection. We are still working on the family and ancestors of John OZMENT, his father. When more conclusive information is in, it will be posted on your OZMENT FAMILY page. Lon Martin, Stanley G. Davis and others have been very helpful in this task.
Looking forward to hearing from you and others on the OZMENT FAMILY page. I think our posted notes on the Ozments are fine. Just hope I have not confused the issue with the corrections.
I will send you revised charts for my branch of OZMENTas far back as I am comfortable and can provide valid sources.
Best wishes,
Dwight W. Ozment

Yes, I did subscribe to TNWILSON-D and enjoy checking it out. Hope to find more about those elusive Ozments. Also, found Joyce Anderson's info about OSMENT/LAIN quite interesting. Still working on that.

Armstrong Ozment of Wilson County Tennessee.
Robert Burton Ozment m.Nancy Jane Scarborough at Lebanon Tn.
Della Mae Ozment married Albert Dove Jaco in Lebanon Tn in 1904; he was the son of William Jaco who married Lockey Doss Fletcher at Lebanon Tn.
So you see, I've got roots that run deep into Wilson County.
Maybe I can find out more about my Scarborough family!

Dear Bob,
I am very interested in having the children of Horace and Nell. I am trying to complete as much as possible on the Ozment/Osment family. On these James Harrison Ozment(s), I have found five or six in the familiy branches. I am trying to straighten out the records on these. On top of this I have found two James H. Ozments (Sr. and Jr.) whose middle name was Henry the James Ozments, I won't even mention there were so many. So you can see how "messed up" our Ozment tree is and how confusing it is to some people.

I thank you very much for your time and effort in helping me. All is appreciated. As you can see, I did not have as much as you sent me on this branch. If I may be of help to you please let me know. Thanks again. I am making a cc of this note for Nancy Goodman for her website.

Sincerely,
Lon

Goodspeed's History of Wilson County, Tennessee, pub. 1886, reprinted 1971, p. 1111:

J. Harrison Ozment, an enterprising farmer, was born September 11, 1853, in Wilson County, Tenn., and is one of three children born to John C. and Amanda (Wright) Ozment. The father was born October 5, 1833, (the family bible shows October 5, 1832, which is the date I use, Lonnie) in Wilson County, and is a farmer by occupation. He is the owner of about 100 acres of land, and is now living in the Twenty-fifth District. The mother was born March 4, 1834, and is the daughter of Hollis and Elizabeth Wright. Our subject was reared in Wilson County, and received a practical education in the country schools. In 1877 he began farming for himself, and December 20, 1876, Emma A. Clemmons became his wife. She is the daughter of William L. and Elizabeth (Carver) Clemmons, and was born March 12, 1857. Mr. and Mrs. Ozment are the parents of three children: Clara, Lenna, and Horace. Mr. Ozment has a fine farm of 200 acres in the Twenty-fifth District, and is a gentleman in every respect. He is a Democrat in politics, and a consistent member of the Missionary Baptist Church. Mrs. Ozment is a member of the Christian Church.
In the 1860 Wilson County census he is listed as James H., 7 years old.

Yes, these numbers are my source/end notes. I can't transmit them as smaller numbers for some reason. They are smaller on my program but don't transmit as small. Sometimes I just delete them before I send, but then can't transmit the source numbers. I guess I could have put in parenthesis. Didn't think about that until now.

Lon,
I hope this is of some help to you. I have a gg-great aunt, Angie Frances Lain, daughter of William H. Lain and Sarah Ann Van Hook, born June 17, 1870, died September 1,1894, buried in Ozment Cem. on Murfreesboro Pike about 3 miles from Lebanon, TN. I have her down as being married to a R.G.Ozment but do not have their children. This is probably your Angie and Rufus. I have let my Lain file get a little disorganized and haven't had the time to delve into some of the names. I will keep Angie in mind and when I start on the Lains again maybe I will come across their children. I assume since they are buried in Lebanon that they did not go to Texas with her sister Julia Alice and husband John Haney Shannon.

If I can help you in any other way please let me know.

Hi Nancy,
Lon Martin was kind enough to forward the url for your Ozment page. I had no idea that such a page existed. I am excited that there is a place to exchange ideas and information.
I am descended from Alfred Ozment, born about 1805 in North Carolina who married Nancy Ann Lane, born about 1801 in North Carolina. They married 21 April 1823 in Davidson County, Tennessee. They moved on the Wilson County, Tennessee and then Drew County, Arkansas.
I have found quite a bit of information on the Ozments from different sources, although there seems to be some confusion about exactly who was Alfred's father. My main want is information about Nancy Ann Lane's parents. I have found bits and pieces of information but can't seem to put it together. I hope someone will have some information about her.

Good Morning Lon, Nancy and All,
It has been several months since I've corresponded and have worked on this line. I was hitting 'dead-ends' so decided to work more on the PAVEY's and hopefully get some clues that way. STILL hitting 'dead-ends!' <g> I will submit this information (although, I know, at least Lon already has it) and see if by chance someone has something new that can help me.

First of all, my interest in the OZMENT line is due to the fact that I am a descendant of John PAVEY and probable wife (Mary?) ANDERSON through their son, Anderson PAVEY (b: 1790, Caroline Co, MD.) This ANDERSON line was connected to the Nicolites (religious sect) from the Eastern Shore (1760-ca. 1800.) Many of the old 'hard-core' Nicolites migrated to Guilford Co, NC, by 1800 (including John Pavey and the Anderson's.)

Marriage Bond dated: January 11, 1816, Guilford Co, NC (I have copy of original) -- Becky PEAVY - RICHARD OZMENT.

Guilford Co, NC WILL ABSTRACTS - Unrecorded Wills...
MARGARET COOK - Noncupative Will - 13 Jan 1817
Rebecca DAVEY - teakettle, 6 pewter plates, coffee pot, 1 sheet
David STACK - large pot & dutch oven (he md. to Sarah, Richard's sister.)
Isaac ANDERSON - her bed
Wit: Richard OZMENT as certified to James Millis, JP
-Notes: I have a copy of this will, and Rebecca's name was PAVEY. Why it looked like DAVEY was because it was a little on the light side and when they closed the "P", they closed it a little low...but, it was PAVEY. When John PAVEY purchased land in Guilford Co, 1803 and sold it 1807, his name was spelled PEAVY throughout except for where he signed it and it was PAVEY as plain as day (I also have copies of these original deeds.)-
Old Guilford, NC Court Minutes, 1781-1788 & Genealogical Implications of the Laws in Effect - Guilford Co, NC Court of Common Pleas and Quarter Sessions.....#278: Frances SULLAVAN prvd deed from JAMES RYAN & wife to RICHARD OZMENT, 116a, 20 August, 1787 Pleas & Quarter Sessions. -
Notes: There were SULLIVAN's who were Nicolites. From a SULLIVAN researcher, Marcus Sullivan - sullivan@acs.stritch.edu - comes the following..." Florence Sullivane Jr.'s son, Holland, married Elizabeth OZMENT (b: 1821, TN.) They were married Sept. 21, 1841, Wilson Co, TN, had 11 children and moved to Saline Co, IL in 1853. She died there in 1886, I have burial records." Holland was the son of Florence, Jr who was the son of Florence, Sr and wife, Sarah, who had migrated to Guilford Co before 1800. Frances (from above) and Florence SULLIVAN, Sr. were connected (brothers, probably, sons of Daniel?)
A Solomon CAUSEY md: Elizabeth OZMENT, Guilford Co, 6/27/1832. Many CAUSEY's were Nicolites in MD/DE and some migrated to Guilford Co, ca. 1800. Nicolite Marriage Records show: William ANDERSON (of Kent Co, DE) and Ann CAUSEY (of Caroline Co, MD) married August 31, 1791. (Further research shows that William ANDERSON died very shortly after the wedding...what happened to Nancy...did she also migrate to NC?) Also, was ISAAC ANDERSON (Margaret Cook's will) connected to this William ANDERSON? Probably, but how? The will of Zebulon CAUSEY (Guilford Co, 1809) names son Solomon..one of the witnesses was Hugh SHERWOOD (the Sherwood's were from Caroline Co, MD also. However, they were Methodists, not Nicolites. Hugh SHERWOOD was practically a next-door neighbor to Anderson PAVEY on the 1820 Washington Co, IN. census.
On the 1790 Caroline Co, MD census, John PAVEY already had a daughter. I believe this was Rebecca PAVEY OZMENT. John PAVEY died, 1814, Washington Co, IN.
My researcher lost track of Richard & Becky OZMENT shortly after their marriage (did they migrate to TN??) Then, in a later census, she 'picked up' a Becky Ozment in Guilford. Had Richard died? Did they have any children and what happened to Becky?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Also, any opinions, especially about Becky being John PAVEY's daughter. Have any of you ever come across the surname of PAVEY/PEAVY before. (We have learned that the Southern branch of PAVEY's changed their names to PEAVY...don't know whether it was on purpose or not.)
Thanks for listening.

Hi Nancy,
Here is a copy of an e-mail that I just sent to the Lane list and the Davidson Co, TN list. I'm wondering if I should send it to the Wilson Co. List too?

I am interested in finding information about Owen LANE who is found on the 1820 Davidson Co, TN census. Did he have children, Nancy Ann, b ca 1801, Denny, and Thomas? The Owen LANE on the 1820 Davidson Co, TN census was over 45 years of age. He had two sons 16-26, a daughter 10-16, a daughter 16-26, and a wifer over 45. The daughter 16-26 could very well be my Nancy Ann Lane, b ca 1801 who married Alfred OZMENT in Davidson Co, TN on 18 Apr 1823. A Denne Lane married Susannah McFaddin 1 March 1821 in Davidson. A Thomas Lane married Rebecca McFaddin on 24 June 1819 in Davidson. Also on the 1820 census is a Thomas LAIR or LAIN, age 26-45.

Another interesting note about Owen LANE. His revolutionary pension was applied for 17 Oct 1832 in Davidson Co, TN. He was aged 77 then, stated he was born in Caroline Co, MD, lived there and enlisted there and was one the Maryland line. Afterwards he moved to Guilford Co, NC and then moved to Davidson Co, TN. This is the same migration for my Ozment family! They went from somewhere in Maryland to Guilford Co, NC and then to Davidson Co, TN and then on to Wilson Co, TN!

P.S. Since I sent this query I noticed queries in the Caroline Co, MD page for Richard OZMENT by Dwight Ozment! Could they be from the same place and migrated together?

Yes, I would send it to the Wilson County list.....there are many Lane researchers & Ozment searchers on there, so hopefully someone might be able to see a connection.....
Have you checked with Dwight on his line?
If you'd like me to, I can send a copy to the entire Ozment group.....then we will see what comes up....
I am also sending a copy to Bob Carver who has some info on Lanes, and to Heather Bowers who does a Lane newsletter, and also has a LANE homepage....
I am working on a page for our Ozment/Osment researchers, to list how everyone is descended.....if you would send me your line, I will be glad to post it.......look at the page I did for the Coggin Research Team at:

and that is what I will do for the Ozment researchers who send me their lines.....

Yes, please send to the Ozment group. I have talked with Heather and have put my Lane page on her web site. I'm not sure if I have ever talked to Bob. And I don't believe I have talked to Dwight either ...
Here is what I have right now for Alfred. I am not entirely sure of his parentage at all. This is so frustrating!

Cynthia,
Saw your post on TNWilson-D, V98#55, 11 Oct 1998 re: your related lines including OZMENT. ...

I am researching my OZMENT families from Guilford Co., NC who moved to Wilson Co., TN about 1820. My 4th great grandfather, Richard Ozment (b. between 1759 & 1763, MD ; d. about 1830-1840, Wilson Co., TN ?) married Elizabeth LeCompte July 16, 1778, Caroline Co., MD. They had at least two sons - Howard OZMENT and Richard OZMENT. Howard apparently came to Wilson Co., TN about 1820 but returned to Guilford Co., NC by 1840. Richard (the son of Richard) apparently moved to Wilson Co. from Guilford Co. prior to his father's arrival and remained . Nothing is known about Elizabeth (LeCompte) OZMENT, but believe she died before moving to Wilson Co. or soon thereafter.
If you have any information on the OZMENT line, please advise. Also, please include any information on the connection to your other surnames.

You may want to check out the OZMENT Web Page by Nancy Goodman. The URL is as follows:

I have submitted my Ozment Genealogy Report to Nancy as of today (10/13/98) and it should be on the OZMENT Web Page soon. ...

Dwight,
I appreciate your interest. I'm afraid I don't have much on the Ozments, just more questions? They seem to show up next door to, living with, and in a couple of cases, marry members of the Carpenter family, which is my big research headache. I was hoping to see if anyone had information that might help me understand the Carpenter family. I don't think they were related because the Carpenters came from VA and the Ozments from NC, but they seemed to like each other a lot.
William W. Carpenter (blvd to be my ancestor)m. Ellen Ozment April 19, 1847, in Wilson County (She was about 17, he was about 47 and had children considerably older than her). He moved her and his younger children to Jefferson County, Il, where they got divorced and he married another time.
Radford B. Ozment m. Martha Carpenter April 15, 1846 Wilson County, TN. They evidently disappeared from the face of the earth after that.
Wilson County TN 1850 Census household # 639 shows head of household Sarah Ozment, age 74, born NC. Living with her were Samuel Carpenter 22, born TN and Mary Carpenter 18 , born TN. These WERE my ancestors.
I've done lots of Wilson County research and I see the name Samuel Ozment frequently as one of the earliest settlers. I was wondering if he might be Sarah's husband and they might be ancestors of this family.
If anybody can shed any light on any of this it would be appreciated.

Hi group,
I did a lot of researching on OZMENT and LANE today. I feel that Owen LANE found on the 1820 census of Davidson Co, TN with a daughter 16-26, might be the elusive father of my Nancy Ann LANE, b ca 1801, NC, who married Alfred OZMENT in 1823 in Davidson Co, TN. I thought I would share so that maybe you could give me some ideas.

1810 Guilford Co, NC census:
Page 171
Jonathan LANE 1 male 26-45, 4 males<10, 1 female 26-45
Samuel OZMENT 1 male 45+, 1 male 26-45, 2 males 16-26, 1 male 10-16
1 female 16-26

Owen LANE 1 male 45+, 1 male 10-16, 2 males<10

1 female 26-45, 1 female 10-16, 3 females<10

Now James OZMENT I believe is the one who is in 1820 Wilson Co, TN. I have a copy of an old letter that says that James was the father of Alfred, not John which most Ozment researchers have as his father. As you can see, Alfred, b. ca 1805, NC would fit in perfect with the three males < 10. Nancy, b. ca 1801, NC fits perfectly with the 1 female under 10! Am I crazy for hoping. Indidentally, Owen LANE's Rev. War pension file says that he was born in Caroline Co, MD where Richard OZMENT is supposed to be from too! His file says he was born ca 1755, enlisted in Caroline Co, MD, and afterwards moved to Guilford Co, NC and then Davidson Co, TN. I also found records of an Owen LANE buying land in Wilson Co, TN in the 1820's. The point is, wherever our OZMENTs are, so appear to be the LANEs.

Look at the others I found in 1810 Guilford Co, NC:

She married CAMERON OZMENT October 25, 1841 in Wilson County, Tennessee, {Cam might be the son of JAMES OZMENT and ELIZABETH UNKNOWN. as James was living next to Cameron in the census of 1850 in Wilson County next to Cam. He would have been about the right age. James is listed as being 83 years old, which would have made him born in 1767. It has not been proven though that he is Cam's father. He seems to be the only candidate, but this is just guesswork right now. We do know that Cam b abt 1811 and (James) Thomas Ozment b after 1797 were brothers. It also seems, but again guesswork that James H. Ozment b 1801-1810, d. August 29, 1849 was also a brother to Thomas and Cam. [ONE THING ABOUT THESE JAMES...WE ARE GOING TO HAVE TO BE VERY CAREFUL WITH THEM BECAUSE THERE WERE SO MANY LM]

Notes for SOFRONIA CATHERINE OZMENT:
Sofronia was known by her middle name of Catherine. She was six years old when her father died. Her guardian, along with her sister Emily, was listed as Samuel Ozment in 1827.

More About SOFRONIA CATHERINE OZMENT: Fact 1: She is buried at the Osment Cemetery, south of Lebanon, Wilson County, Tennessee

Notes for CAMERON OZMENT:
Cam Ozment's name was spelt as Ozment in the 1870 census, but he was buried under the name of Osment. Somehow the z was changed to an s by accident or design. We know his son Harrison went all of his life with his own name as Ozment.
More About CAMERON OZMENT: Fact 1: He is buried at the Osment Cemetery.

Children of SOFRONIA OZMENT and CAMERON OZMENT are:
i. JAMES HARRISON OZMENT, b. October 28, 1844, Wilson County, Tennessee; d. December 10, 1926, Columbus, Cherokee County, Kansas; m. MARGARET "MAGGIE" ANN ALVERY GRISHAM, Lebanon, Wilson County, Tennessee.
Notes for JAMES HARRISON OZMENT: James Harrison Ozment went by the name of Harrison all of his life. His wife's surname is found as Grissom in some records.

ii. GREEN T. OZMENT, b. 1848, Wilson County, Tennessee; d. November 11, 1909, Wilson County, Tennessee.
More About GREEN T. OZMENT: Fact 1: He is buried at the Osment Cemetery.

iii. FRANCES OZMENT, b. April 12, 1850, Wilson County, Tennessee; d. October 03, 1927; m. THWEAT MCCARTNEY, August 17, 1866.

iv. JOHN OZMENT, b. 1854, Wilson County, Tennessee; d. October 1902, Wilson County, Tennessee; m. DOVIE UNKNOWN.

v. RUFUS DOAK OZMENT, b. March 26, 1856, Wilson County, Tennessee; d. Lebanon, Wilson County, Tennessee; m. ANGIE LAIN, September 05, 1886, Lebanon, Wilson County, Tennessee. [THERE MIGHT BE AN ERROR HERE WITH RUFUS DOAK, SOME PEOPLE SAY HE WAS THE SON OF CAMERON'S OTHER WIFES WHICH WOULD GIVE HIM A DIFFERENT BIRTHDAY. I HAVE NOT CHECKED THIS OUT YET LM]

More About ANGIE LAIN: Fact 1: She is buried at the Osment Cemetery, south of Lebanon, Wilson County, Tennessee

vi. CASSANDRA "CASSIE" MELISA OZMENT, b. April 28, 1858, Wilson County, Tennessee.

OH yes Lon, I would love the will. I have never seen anything on that.
By the way, I have a husband for your Emily! I found these in trust deed records today for Wilson Co, TN. And I finally know who Armstrong Ozment is! He belongs to your line. I have something on him and Samuel also. Sounds like they were characters!

Nancy,
Please correct my OZMENT,OSMENT RESEARCH GROUP - TABLE OF CONTENTS by deleting the following: (1) Richard OZMENT, Jr. (b. 1737, MD) and Rachel RASHFIELD (2) Richard OZMENT (b. 1759, MD) and Elizabeth LeCOMPTE.

Recent research in Talbot Co., MD and information from three Ozment cousins (who are not in the Research Group, but are very active genealogist with interest in the Ozment/Osment families) have helped me turne up additional leads about the parentage of Howard OZMENT, my 3rd great grandfather. Will advise when we get the kinship "nailed down", or at least confirmed to a reasonably satisfactory conclusion. This is not really a surprising development because I have had my doubts about the exact connection for some time now.

It still seems "probable" that Richard and Rachel OZMENT are the grandparents of Howard OZMENT, but more research needs to be done concerning the PARENTS of Howard.

Thanks and Happy New Year. You are doing great with your web pages.

I am searching for information on my great grandfather "Jim Ozment" a cherokee indian "right off" the reservation.  Even though Jim is often short for James, all references I have heard to my ggrandfather have been as Jim.
I recently found the Nancy P. Goodman site with Ozment info.
The information presented by Lon Martin seems to contain some info that may pertain to my ancestors.

My grandmother was Martha Jane Ozment who married my gfather, Harrison Ketchum. Her father was Jim Ozment, a Cherokee indian. I remember my father mentioning an uncle Eli.
Martha Jane Ozment and Harrison Ketchum had 7 boys and 2 girls. My father James Ketchum, was the last born in 1893 or 1895. In Arkansas? This is about all I know about my Ozment ancestors.

I found it interesting that Martha J. Ozment had a brother named Eli and a father named James, possibly this could be my ggrandfather "Jim". I noticed also that Martha J. Ozment's parents were Sarah Ozment (maiden name) and James Ozment (a relative?)

Are any of the Ozments of Indian ancestry? In those times did indians leaving a reservation adopt the names of those they married? If these are my Ozment ancestors, I have really muddied the waters now.

I would appreciate any further information or sources of information to aid in my search.

Hi Genny,
I am another Ozment/Osment researching the line. I have been in touch with Lon Martin and Dwight Ozment over the past year and have recieved what they have. I am attaching what info I have in hopes that you might help me get back beyond Thomas C.. The attachment is in Microsoft Works format so you should be able to read it.
I would appreciate any info that you might provide.

Eleanor,
I expect that, by now, you have received several responses to your e-mail inquiry to the OZMENT/OSMENT list dated 1/2/99 concerning James H. Ozment, Jr. and Alfred Ozment. I see I'm not the only Ozment researcher who is "missing a lot" reference these two.

I still have the children of James Henry OZMENT, Sr.(b. 1755, Yorkshire, England ; d. Aug. 29, 1849, prob. Wilson Co., TN) and Elizabeth ARDEN/ARDENT (b. between 1757 and 1760, NC) as follows:

(1) John Lafayette OZMENT (b. abt. 1780, NC) , married #1- abt. 1798 Martha Francis JACKSON ,and #2- 1816 Cora Ann Frazier.

(2) James Henry OZMENT, Jr. ( b. Sep 7, 1793, NC ; d. Oct 1861, Drew Co., AR), married July 17, 1817 Lebanon, Wilson Co., TN Elizabeth EDDINS.

(3) Alfred OZMENT (b. abt. 1804, NC ; d. abt. 1877, Drew Co., AR), married Apr 21, 1823 Davidson Co., TN Nancy Ann LANE.

(4) Richard S. OZMENT (b. abt. 1805, Guilford Co., NC ; d. Apr 13, 1866, Saline Co., IL) , married Jun 7, 1821 Wilson Co., TN Rebecca EDDINS. (and , yes, I know there is still a debate about his middle initial being a "S" or a "D").

I, too, would like to have confirmation and valid sources (or at least a consensus) on these families.

I'm having enough trouble connecting my own branch. If you have not heard, I am temporarily "disconnected". Additional leads are being developed and it now "appears" that my 3rd great grandfather, Howard OZMENT, may not be the son of Richard and Elizabeth (LeCompte) OZMENT, but "possibly" the son of one of three other Talbot Co., MD OZMENT/OZMON males (John, Jonathan, Thomas) who are listed in the 1790 census for Talbot Co. Not really a surprise since I have not been completely convinced of Howard's parentage from the beginning. Still think Howard's grandfather (my 5th great grandfather) is Richard OZMENT (b. abt 1737,Talbot Co.,MD; d. May 1817, Guilford Co., NC) who married abt. 1755 Rachael RASHFIELD (? - her maiden surname is still not certain).

If you, Lon Martin, Rebecca DeArmond ,or any of the others on list have confirmations, corrections, additions, etc. to clarify kinship for ANY of these folks, please feel free to share the information.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Hi Dwight and Everyone,

I was in the ancestry.com site this a.m. (took advantage of their 30-day free trial), and I don't know if any of you had this or not. I found it in Hinshaw's ENCYCLOPEDIA OF AMERICAN QUAKER GENEALOGY, Vol 1 (I didn't have the chance to check out the other volumes.)

BIRTH AND DEATH RECORDS, pg. 623...
Walter R. OZMENT (nothing further)

Velna OZMENT, dt. Stephen & Sarah (Dobson) HODGIN, b: 6/24/1868, married 10/19/1898.

Sometimes these records are a little hard to follow (at least for me.) I didn't know whether anyone had this info, or knew that apparently some OZMENTS were Quakers.Hopefully, tomorrow, I'll be able to go back and check out the other volumes that they have listed.

From: A Scubadog@aol.com

My greatgrandmother was Bennie Lee (Ozment) Page (born in TN 5-Jan-1892) to Tom Ozment and Charity M. Phelps. From our family Bible Tom Ozment was born in TN abt. Oct. 1850 but I have no idea when/where he died or where he is buried...I assume in Davidson or Wilson County. Charity Phelps was born also in Tn abt. Dec 1848 and died late 1933. They lived in Davidson county in the Donelson / Mud Tavern area.

Does anyone have any details on Tom Ozment or Charity M. Phelps Ozment? Where are Tom and Charity buried? Who were their parents?

PLEASE help and God Bless.

Frank,
I have not forgotten lookup of your grandfather Carroll Chase STURGIS in Virginia Archives. Just have not had the chance ......
The other "serious" Ozment researchers (my branch) I mentioned are John Allan Ozment (CA),David Carlos Smith (NC), and Evelyn J. Thoes (TX) . I have already corresponded with them about you and your lineage, so maybe something will develop.

Suggest you subscribe to the OSMENT,OZMENT RESEARCH GROUP web page if you have not already done so. Contact Nancy Goodman, webmaster,>Genny1@aol.com< and I'm sure she will advise what info you need to submit to subscribe.

Hi Nancy, I received your name in referral from Dwight Ozment. He suggested I contact you to subscribe to the Ozment list/web page of which you are webmaster. By way of introduction, I am a direct Ozment/Ozmon descendant from Talbot Co., Md. and have a line, perhaps related, maybe not, to Dwight's. We certainly have much in common, in any event. I would be glad to share, participate, etc. as I am deeply interested in this family line and its branches.
Please let me know what I need to do to subscribe.
Thanks, Frank
