WEAKLEY, McGAUGH, HARNISH, COBLE:
Subj: Weakley Family Date: 97-12-02
From: Spiritess1@aol.com
Dear Nancy,
I was thrilled to find the WEAKLEY family listed under the Family Tree
Maker web site.
I have been searching the McGAUGH part of my lineage for a while now
and have not been able to turn up anything.
When I saw the name "Weakley", it struck a cord!!!
As my Great Great Grandfather had the middle name of Weakley, I believe
I might be on the right track here.
These are the names I am interested in:
Matthew Weakley McGaugh born July 8, 1846 in Marshall Co.,
TN died April 13, 1919 in Elkins, TX married H. J. (Jennie) COBLE
born
Mar 2, in TN died in TX The above is the furthest back I can get on the
McGaugh's and if I can tie them into the Weakley's, I would like to
search that line too!!
Thank you so much for your time. If you could provide me with any
information or point me in the right direction, I would be very
grateful. Again, thank you.

Hi, Loretta and Nancy!
Loretta writes: "These are the names I am interested in: Matthew Weakley
McGaugh born
July 8, 1846 in Marshall Co., TN died April
13, 1919 in Elkins, TX
married H. J. (Jennie) Coble born Mar 2, in TN died in TX."
The only McGAUGH shown in The Southern Virgina Weakley Families and
Their Descendants by Samuel Anderson Weakley <SAW> is
Sarah McGAUGH,
b. 19 Dec 1772 in VA, m. Isaac WEAKLEY (B9) 10 Mar 1797 in Davidson
Co.,TN.
He speculates that Sarah died about 1841 in Scott Co., MO, as Isaac
was
busy making land deals there at the time. Isaac then apparently returned
to TN and married Mary Hunter-Lee
29 Sep 1842 in Davidson Co.
SAW has no further information on Sarah, except that she and Isaac
had
eight children, six boys and two girls. The WEAKLEY family seems to
have
been much admired, and it is entirely possible that some in Sarah's
McGaugh line admired Isaac or another Weakley and decided to give
Matthew the Weakley name.
SAW gives some examples of this in the Robert WEAKLEY (B7) line.
A brief note on the ID numbers:
SAW begins the genealogy in America with Robert Weakley (no wife known),
who had four children:
A, William Weakley, who had no children;
B, Robert Weakley, m. Elinor STEWART;
C, James Weakley, m. Hannah COFFEE; and
D. Jean Weakley, m. John STEWART.
He traces all lines to some degree, but the largest, by far, is the
B line.
The numbers refer to the children in order of birth. Sometimes there is a
lowercase "a" or "b" following a number indicating second and third
wives,
and few times more! I am a seventh generation descendant in the B
line; B2.8a.7.6.1.3.
I am also working POWERS and EVANS and related lines, which you know
are
extensive. I am always happy to assist in any way that I can.
Best wishes in your endeavors. Sincerely,
Ken Powers,
Portland, TN

MERRILL, GREGORY, KNIGHT:
Subj: Tennessee Ancestors Date: 97-12-05
From:pknight@fidnet.com (Patricia
A. Knight)
I am trying to research William Roland Merrill, who died in Athens,
Limestone County, Alabama in Feb. 1849. William was born in Rowan
County,
NC in 1816 and married Lucretia Gregory in Limestone County, Alabama
in
1836 and they had 4 children ,
John,
Mary Jane,
James Polk and
Chapman N.
They must have moved back and forth to Lincoln and Giles County, TN
after
his death Mary Jane married in TN and his wife, daughter of Byrd GREGORY,
Lucretia was in those counties in the 1850 census. Byrd Gregory was
also,
back and forth between Alabama and Tennessee.
What I am trying to find out is where Wm. Merrill is buried and who
his
parents were.....
I believe them to be John Merrill and Mary (Polly) Chapman)
Merrill???
Would the local papers at the time have carried obits? I hope!!!
He fought in the Mexican War and died as a result of dysentery from
being
in Mexico. I have tried everywhere to locate his place of burial and
prove
parentage .....census, marriage , National Archives, wills, etc.....
I have info from his time spent in the service..but, no listing of
parents.
.... Would any records be in that area on these people.....
By the way, tonight was the first time that I've been in your home
page
and I am impressed ... I use many and will come back to visit....

BYERLEY, BYERLY, KINSER, FOUNTAIN:
Subj: [TN] TN ancestors from PA, MD,or VA? Date: 97-12-05
From:doriskf@ibm.net Doris Kinser
Fountain (new email)
To: TNROOTS-L@LISTSERV.INDIANA.EDU
While researching a German family (Byerley), I found information which
I believe should be considered by all researchers who are struggling
to
determine from which state northeast of TN was the pre-1800 home of
the
future Tennesseans. Some researchers refuse dialog with researchers
from "other" states of
the same surname and may make a serious mistake.
When I recently returned from Lancaster CO, PA, it took only a few
minutes
to drive from PA into MD and on into Northern VA, which was the route
which many ancestors took down the "Great Wagon Road" as they came
into
the future state of TN.
From the early pages of The Byerly Family of the Vally of VA, by John
F.
Byerley, Jr, 8305 Spring Hollow Drive, Richmond, VA 23227, 1994:
Out of regard for the rights of the Indians, the authorities
in PA did
not permit settlement west of the Susquehana River until after 1729.
Many of these German immigrants thus resolved to seek homes sites
elsewhere.
Two decades before the Am. Rev. large numbers of non-sectarian
Germans
from PA spilled over the southern borders of that Province into Frederick
CO, MD.
Lord Fairfax of VA offered them special inducements to settle in
northern
VA. The trail of Monacracy started at a point on the
Susequehana River
near the present site of Wrightsville and thus to a point on the Monacacy
River near the boundary of PA and MD and along the river to the Potomac.
(From page 12). Documentation is sketchy in this period. The early
Germans
did not keep careful personal records. They were more intent on preparing
their lands for cultivation and building their honmes, and wasted
no time
on such matters; and, so it happens that the history of these first
settlements is shrouded in uncertainty.
English speaking descendants, if they found records in a language
unreadable to them, more often than not, threw these useless
papers away.
Many were working as indentured servants and did not own the land.
There were no census or tax lists for those early years.
The border between PA/MD was not definite.
Deeds were often in private hands and not recorded publicly. The Germans
were suspicious of government...
The boundary between Lancaster CO, PA,and Frederick CO, MD, was not
definite. It may have been that the stay in MD was short and the
Lancaster residence remembered more strongly... Documentation...between
Hagerstown and Cerefoss is given greater credence through the association
with the families...
The move of...families into the vicinity of Harrisonburg, VA, about
the
same time, speaks of the closeness of their relationship in MD.
From page 17 of the same source:
The Valley of VA was in the process of being settled when the
Byerleys
came to The Great Valley, known now as the Shenandoah
Valley...
They arrived in the second half oF the 18th century, settling in
Frederick
CO in the north at Mecklenberg, (now Shepherdstown, WV).
Others settled later in Rockingham CO.
Still others settled as far south as Botetourt CO, on the James River,
at Springwood, near Fincastle, VA.
The Valley generally embraced that geographical area from Frederick
CO
(organized in 1738) and Augusta CO (1838) in the north to Botetourt
CO
(1770) in the south.
Boteoturt CO, as late as 1786, was considered the most frontier of
the
valley counties.
In 1778 Rockingham CO was formed from Augusta.
Understanding this territory is helpful in locating the early Byerlys
in
the Valley of VA.
For all non-English speaking settlers it is even more imperative to
understand the geography of the early colonies.
It also becomes more important to research with families of all future
states.

I have been to your web page and am impressed.
I have a WEAKLEY line on my husband's line that starts with James WEAKLEY
and Jane WILSON in Ireland about 1700.
Then on to Isabel b.1749 in Pa died 1827 in Ga. who married Stephen
GROVES.
I also have a GOODMAN line--Henry GOODMAN, born 1758 SC married Catherine
SMITHHART and died 1833 Anderson County, Tennessee.
Might these be connected?
I have a Robert WEAKLEY in record as one of the children of James.
He married Elizabeth GILLESPIE by my records.
MORRIS:
Subj: Question from a Novice Date: 97-12-07
From: Jimtyler@aol.com
I have an interest in Genealogy but have zero knowledge of the subject.
My last name is MORRIS and I know that my Great, Great Grandfather
is
listed in the 1850 Census in Robertson County, TN.
His name is Peter B. MORRIS and he was born in 1800.
I have never seen the actual listing but some of my relatives have.
No one has ever looked further.
Any ideas of suggestions you might have about how I might go forward
would
be appreciated.
Are there any MORRIS'that you know of in your local genealogy circles in
the Robertson County area?
One of Peter MORRIS' sons listed in that 1850 Census was an ISSAC Morris.
Issac is my Great Grandfather. He moved from TN to Arkansas and it is
possible that there is very little documented information about where
he
went.
He was born in 1848 and was only 2 1/2 when that census was done.
The neat thing is that if you can help me locate somone who knows
the
MORRIS' from TN, I know everything (or can find it out) about Issac
and
his line.
In one significant branch of that line, I have the only boy that can
keep
the name going.
I know you have much going on with your own searches and if you do
not
even have time to respond, that is fine.
I just wanted to take a shot to see if there might be some MORRIS
that you
know ir if you could steer me to the most valuable local resources
for
this type of information.
Best Reagrds and Merry Christmas,
Jim Morris

both born in Tn. and so were their following children:
George STRICKLAND, b. June 1876,
Early B. STRICKLAND, Jan 1880,
it showed on the census that they had 7 living children in 1920,
I do know not the other children's names.
Lear Vesta STRICKLAND was their last child, b. 1882 in Ark.
I found a John and Sarah STRICKLAND who were married in Polk Co.,

Two other possible names for John and Sarah's children are:

Last searching for William Goodwin (or possibly Goodman) THOMASSON.

Hi Nancy,
Just found your great website and looked at a few of your queries.
My hubby's roots are all in TN and VA.
We would like to send you family charts and info of those that lived
in
Washington Co., TN... From my Family Origins I can only send descendant
charts in book form. I guess I could write out info on generations that
lived in TN??? Or..snailmail a few computer generated family charts
for
your classes. (p.s.my hubby and I are "seniors" - ages 74 and 76 and
going strong)
We have one particular question we'd love to have help with and that
is
this:
Our gr-grandfather Tinsley Rucker WILLIAMSON is buried in the
Confederate Cemetery at Hermitage - on grounds with Rachel's little
church. (we have found it in past trips to Nashville. He died in 1914.
He also lived in the Confederate Hospital/Home that was also on the
same grounds at one time. From "cousins" in Jonesboro we recently
found out that there was a
"breakdown in communications" with the home at time of his death and
that
he was SUPPOSED TO HAVE BEEN sent back to Jonesboro to be buried in
plots
he had purchased earlier.!???!!!
Our question for you/your class is -How can we find out more about
the Confederate Home/Hospital that stood on this land?
We'd like to know the history of it - how many lived there and when
it
was or first used as Confederate Hospital/Home.
Both Nashville State Library and Hermitage Assoc. has given us very
very
little info about it - only that Tinsley came there in 1914.
Looking forward to using your website for queries, etc. and thanks
to you, - we haven't found much help in research in Washington Co.,
before.
Thanks,

From: BarnCUSA@aol.com
Dear Genny,
How good it is to find a Tennessee Genealogy source on the WWW.
I am a genealogy buff and can trace some "branches" of my family tree 26
generations. I am having trouble tracing back my family name "JONES".
The last Jones I can trace was born in 1813, died in 1889 in Knox
Co. and
named John JONES Jr. by his mother Rebecca GALLAHER and father John
JONES
who disappeared into the wilderness supposedly with Andrew Jackson
towards New Orleans.
I know they were married in Knox County in 1811 and she was from
Washington
County, TN and was born in 1788. The whereabouts and "from which Jones'
he
came from" remain a mystery. I have a suspicion that he may be a
descendant
of the John Jones (who was a descendant of Rev.Rowland JONES) who was one
of the original members of the State of Franklin. My grandfather,
who is now 80, and I have worked on our project for
probably 20 years now and to find the "Jones Branch" would be a real
Christmas gift. If you have any idea where to start I would greatly
appreciate your input and please let me know how I might assist you
in the future.

Roxie's paternal grandmother, Clarissa BIRD FOX WYATT raised her.
The 1880 Sevier County Census reflect that Roxie was living with Clarissa

anyone know what happened to her from 1880 - 1922? Also, I was told
that
Martha Ann was refered to as 'Dark' BAKER,is this one and the same person?
Lastly, tradition is that Roxie was instrumental in her husband's

1896,
Chestnut Hill, TN) death. He died from complications resulting from
her
kicking him in the chest. Any information on this?

Hello Genny,
I ran across your site while surfing the net looking for family..
I see where some of your inquires involve the Holladay name.
I do not know if you are aware of it, but Alvis Milton Holladay, now
deceased, wrote a great book on the Holladay Family, and he lived
in
Brentwood, Tn. His widow still lives there, and his son lives nearby.
They have some of these books still for sale, I think. Even if you don't
want to purchase one, I'm sure they would be glad to let you look
thru it for info. This thing is huge, some 571 pages and well done.
Alvis was a professior at Vanderbilt, I believe.

GREEN, GREENE, JAMES, MORRIS, PRICE:
Subj: Green, Morris, Price Date: 97-12-19
From: LaurieJoy@aol.com
Daniel Price GREEN (gg-grandfather) born about 1830 in TN.
Was in the 1840 census for Lawerence Co.,TN. Married Virginia MORRIS.
Possible brother: Samuel P. GREEN. Was also in 1840 Lawerence Co.
census. He married Cathrine MORRIS 4/9/46 in Lauden Co., TN.
Daniel and Virginia moved to Texas by 1850, probably with Samuel and
his
family.
Daniel is registered in Parker Co., TX in 1870.
Their son, Sterling Price GREEN (g-grandfather) was born in 1863 in
Parker
Co.,TX. The middle name of PRICE is common in this family, but I can't
find a direct connection. Who were Daniel's parents? I have no information
beyond Daniel.
And have absolutely none on Virginia Morris.
Thank You,

MARTIN, DRENAN, REEVES, BRILEY, RUSSELL, CULVER, and BAILEY I need
any information on Allen MARTIN, who was born in Tennessee. During his
youth, he may have been raised by his maternal grandfather, with the last
name of REEVES. Allen married Nancy DRENAN about 1862 in Perry County,
Tennessee. Nancy later married Abram BRILEY, and Robert RUSSELL, after
Abram died. I also need information on the family of John CULVER and

LYNCH, DAVIS, WELLS, ROSE:
Subj: New Lynch Genealogy Pages Date: 97-12-23 From:
jlynch@mail.edge.net
To: LYNCH-L@rootsweb.com
I have just posted some Lynch family genealogy information at my web
site
http://personalweb.edge.net/~jlynch/famhist.htm
John Dillon Lynch and Katy Davis were married probably in Virginia
around
1790, and later they moved to Kentucky.
Two of their sons, David Lynch and John Dillon Lynch, moved to the
Crow
Creek Valley, Franklin County, Tennessee around 1820.
David married Elizabeth Wells in Kentucky in 1817.
One reference says they were married in Glascgow, Ky; another reference
says Estill County, Ky.
I have not been able to find any good documentation on either
location.
My immediate family is descended from David and Elizabeth.
The earliest Tennessee record I have is the marriage of John Dillon
LYNCH
to Elanor "Puss" ROSE in Franklin County in 1822.
John and Katy may have had other children.
I have some vague information about them. Therefore, there is a "?"
mark
beside their names.
I hope this information may be useful to some of you, and I would
greatly
appreciate any light you may shed on my efforts thus far.
