General Nathan Bedford Forrest
"Nathan Bedford Forrest was a
cavalry general in the
Confederate, or Southern, Army during the American Civil War.
He was born in 1821 on a small farm in Tennessee and he
never had much formal education; he is often quoted as having
said that the art of war is to "get there fustest with the mostest
men," but in fact the errors in grammar are exaggerated and
Forrest was a man of great charm and fine manners.
Forrest joined the Confederate Army at the outbreak of war
in 1861. He was promoted to Brigadier General in 1862 and to
Lieutenant General in 1865. He died in 1877." ----from The
Illustrated World Encyclopedia.
