Family notes: David Gordon was captured in Selma, Ala. by the Yankees and was taken to the Federal prison in Nashville because he refused to take the loyalty oath. After the war was over, he finally took the oath and was released June 5, 1865.

David is buried in the Gordon Cemetery, Limestone Co., Alabama.

Notes for (C.S.A.) JAMES CALVIN JONES GORDON:

James enlisted at the age of 16; member of Co. A, Ward's Battery. On Sunday April 16, 1865, James Calvin claimed to have fired one of the last shots of the war in the South from the east end of the Upper Bridge at Columbus Georgia.

He was sheriff of Limestone County. At that time the jail was in a two-story building on Madison Street. The Sheriff and his family lived downstairs while the prisoners were kept overhead.

From a Newspaper clipping by Bob Dunnavant: "He was 7 when his mother died and he was sent to Athens to live with his grandfather, Thomas K. Gordon. He was wounded in the battle of Kennesaw Mountain. James returned home to find his step-mother and children in 'an almost starved condition' and settled temporary in Athens. His father was in prison in Nashville, TN having been taken prisoner at Selma and refusing to take the oath of allegiance to the United States."

Notes for THOMAS J. BUFORD:

His home was called "Beechlawn". His house was very wide with a huge hall and a large room on each side. The "L" at the back was two stories high. It has been said to look much like the old Pullen house at Pigeon Roost. Thomas was the first president of the Nashville and Dectur Railroad and had a rock fence around the house topped with an iron fence made of railroad rails. Mr. Mars purchased this house from the Cayce Abernathys and raised both it and the Dickerson House.

Notes for WILLIAM BUFORD:

His home was on what is now the Carr Hill Road around the bend from Dr. Brown's house and was a large brick with pictures of birds adorning the large hall. The pictures were hand painted by an itenerant artist who lived with the family several months. After William's death the widow married Newton White, Sr. and moved to Pigeon Roost. A family by the name of Lane moved into the house. During the Civil War it was destroyed by the Federals because Lane gave help to Southern scouts and soldiers.

Notes for CAPTAIN ANDREW RUTHVEN GORDON:

He had a company of Calvary in the Confederate Army. The following letter was written by Andrew Ruthven Gordon to his parents, John Boyd Gordon and Mary Anne Kennedy, on July 10th, 1864. As the letter is in A.R.’s script, words that are difficult to transcribe are written in (bold italics). No attempt was made to correct grammatical or spelling errors.

 

 

Johnson Island, July 10th 1864

Dear Pa and Mother,

Knowing that you and family would like to hear from me, I will this Sabbath evening drop you a few lines. I arrived at this prison on the 8th, I left Decatur Ala on the 2nd came to Nashville stayed two days and nights, from there to Louisville Ky, remained three days from there to Indianapolis stayed all night started early next morning bound for The Island. I came through old Giles and everything look so natural. I pass close by Home: in sight but couldn’t stop. It looked very (hard) but it was all right under the circumstances. I mustered up courage and bore it very well. I met a great many of my old friends which were very glad to see me. I have four very nice men for room mates. I am in fine health and like for nothing at present. I could write you a large letter but we are only allowed to write ˝ sheet nor receive one ˝ so we must (li??) all in a very few words. Give my love to all the family and all my friends. Tell (ole Lan) and Sis to write to me often for it will afford me great pleasure to hear from you. Your affectionate Son A. R. Gordon. Tell sister Nancy and (??) to write.

NOTE: He had to eat rats while in the yankee prison simply to survive.

Lewis L. Marks, dec'd. Mary A Marks, the widow, and Ann E. Chisholm and John M. Marks, two of the heirs at law, decline to qualify as administrators., they are the only heirs at law residing in the county. Letters of Administration were issued to John W. Chisholm. It was then charged he failed to execute bond, and application was made for administration. He, in right of his wife Ann E., objected, and R. M. He enlisted in the Confederate Army Jan. 1, 1863 but was rejected because of his age but later he entered under Major Holdman, Company G, 11th Tennessee Regiment, Bell's Brigade, Jackson's Division. He served till his surrender at Gainsville, Alabama on May 10, 1864 in the same Regiment When carpet-bag rule became too oppressive, he joined the Klu Klux Klan and served as the Cyclop of the 17th District of Pulaski Co. for four years. He moved to Arkansas in 1870.
