1980 Letter from Minnie Florence (MINTHY) HENDERSON:
"Well first I am the one you want this news from. ... I am the
granddaughter of Charlie CASE. Fannie CASE mar. my grandfather
after his wife Bell died. She left 7 children as far as I know. Granny as I
called Fannie. She my grandfather raised me after my mother Minnie
MINTHY called her died. She burned to death with a baby a few months
old. My sister Dovie my name is Minnie Florence HENDERSON. Now I
go by the name Florence. My father & my mother were first cousins.
They mar. young. She died the best I can say about 1901 or 1902 in
Honey Grove, Texas. Yes my Granny, Fannie WALKER CASE mar. real
young & I think in Tenn. She mar. a Mr. HARRIS, had 2 daughters. I
never knew them. I knew all of Grandpa's children. They were one big
family. I didn't know my granny's sister you speak of. At that time I was
real young. I saw your grandfather one time as I can remember tho I am
sure I saw him & all others you speak of when was a child as there
seemed to be a lot of kin people coming & going all the time at my
Grand Daddys home. Grand Daddy & Granny went to Grayson Co. got
Jim WALKER & his little sister Mary I remember their coming to our
house so well. Their mother & Dad, I think they separated or maybe he
died. They had 4 children, Jim, Mary, Rose I cant remember the other
girls name. (Nannie Mae WALKER) Their mother mar. again so her
husband wouldn't accept her children she had to give them away. Jim
& Mary were the youngest. Little Mary died about a year after Granny
got them. See they were granny's brother John's children. I think that
was his name. Jim never knew to much about his older sisters. The
last I remember of him speaking of them they lived in Austin. Jim & me
are the same age. I will be 81 Sept. 6 in Oct. he will be 81. He is sick.
I see him once in a while. ... My husband died Sept 5 1977. I have a
daughter Mary Beth. Willie in Waco, a son Charles, Jr. lives in Temple
retired from Veterans hospital at Temple. He & his wife Letha were
nurses there. Faye is a nurse in a nursing home here. I have a son
Russll Lee at Galveston. He is a foreman at a nail plant there. He has 3
sons. I lost a son June 8, 1960 of leukemia. He was 34 left a 10 years
old son Steve he lives in Calif. ... Faye will jet to San Francisco to see
her son & wife & her only grandson Stevie. I don't know James
WALKER or Polly after my Granny died in 1925. I took care of her. I
lived with her until I mar. in 1919. Then took care of her most of the rest
of her life. So many of their children got her things. I dont know who
brought him tho. Grandpa never lived in her home at Satin. They lived
on a big farm north of Satin during his life time. She bought this house
& she & I helped her keep boarders. She loved to go fishing & would go
often. Someone would all ways take her. I did after I married & had a
car. She willed her home to me but I was beat out of it. I know I am not
much help as I was a child in those early years & I just remember all of
them. I do remember a pretty girl comming to visit long times with us.
Jim & me loved her. I dont know who was her parents they called her
Brigget (Bridget did visit them). I think name spelled right or name is
Bright. Could it been Cricket. Do you know of anyone by that name.
She was real pretty had black hair ... I hope you can get a little
information from this ... Faye has 2 daughters here. Retha will graduate
get her masters from Denton Aug. 16. Mar. to Kerry STANELY. No
children. Nancy works at Tyler Co. not married. David in Calif. her
husband shot him self about 8 years ago. Bad health ...
By by. so glad to hear from you. Florence."
[The house was deeded to Compton Funeral Home for the debt of the services
of Fanny. It was sold in 1935 to Selma Guderian COLLINS of Falls Co. I spoke
with the son of Mrs. COLLINS who lives in Ft. Worth. He told me he was trying
to get a Texas Historical Marker for the house as it had been a stage stop on the
way to Wash. on the Brazos, the first state capital. It was small, I could not see
inside but appeared to be 2 rooms across the front with a porch full length & a
room or two in "T" shape at the back. It sat close to the ground.]
[A neighbor took Fanny to the hospital from a local baseball game thinking she
had indigestion. She died of a heart attack. Death certificate gave no family
information. My grandfather went to the funeral. Fanny appears to have had no
contact with her own daughters.]

[When Jeff & Josie mar. they were Methodist. They studied the bible together to
try to find the name of John WESLEY, whom they thought was an apostle, not
finding a reference to him, they converted to Church of Christ. Grandfather was
baptized by Thomas E. MULHOLLAND in Grayson Co., probably at the Hog
Town Church. Jeff was known for being very learned as a bible student & my
mother said people came from far away to get him to settle bible disputes. He
served for many years as an elder in the church.

Mrs. Range descends from this family. She sent me copies of a picture of
Ira B. MARTIN and Sarah Annie. She has in her records that Ira's middle
name was "Brown". I have not seen that record. She also sent several
articles, the following being one of them. I appreciate very much all
her assistance in corrections, etc. in these lines.
"CLIPPING FROM THE GARLAND NEWS"
"Mrs. W. F. BROWN, lovingly called "Grandma BROWN" by hundreds of
friends, young and old, will soon celebrate her eighty-third birthday. She
does her own housework in her modern brick cottage on Bankhead highway, where
she daily receives visits from neighbors who bask in her cheery smile. Her
sense of humor is one of her main attributes, and all through her life she
has been ready to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. Mrs. BROWN is
a regular church attendant at the First Christian Church. She became a
church member at Robinson Fork, Tenn., at the age of twelve. She is
vitally interested in present day affairs and enjoys sports of all kinds.
"Sarah Ann MARTIN was born at Lynnville, GI Co., Tennessee, September 27,
1856, the daughter of I. B. and Melissa MARTIN, natives of GI Co.. She is
the oldest of the seven children, six of whom are still living. She attended
school with her four sisters and two brothers in a log house with one door
and two windows. There were split log benches with peg legs, and the desks
were planks on pegs fastened through holds in the walls. The Civil War
disrupted the schools and often they had only three month terms. Later
school was held in the churches. There were many cousins and young people
in her group, and they had good times at candy pullings, pop corn parties,
and square dances.
"As a young girl she helped her mother spin and reel. One of the most vivid
memories of her childhood were the clumsy shoes. When they needed shoes a
cobbler would come to their home to make shoes for each member of the
family, then go on to another place.
"W. P. BROWN was a neighbor across the road from the MARTIN home, and
he owned a flour mill. He had four sons, Robert, Tom, William Fletcher and
MARTIN, and two daughters, Lesta and Mrs. Joe PULLEN. Robert and Tom
BROWN were Confederate solders, as was Joe PULLEN. Robert was left a
cripple for life, Joe lost a hand, and Tom lost an eye at the battle of
Raymond, Miss.
"About 1,000 Union soldiers camped at the MARTIN (Brown?) flour mill, and
the country was stripped of food and animals. Mrs. BROWN recalls her
dread of these soldiers as she could watch them from the window of her home.
"She was married to William Fletcher BROWN January 16, 1873, and they
went to their home after the ceremony where they had 100 guests for the
wedding supper. The next day they had the in-fair dinner at the home
of the groom's parents.
"There were forty-two in the party when Mr. and Mrs. BROWN and their
children, Edna, now Mrs. W. V. OLINGER, and Rena (Mrs. Charley WILLIS,
dec.) started for Texas on September 3, 1878. The wagon train was
up of eleven two-horse wagons and two double seated buggies. Forty-four
days were required to make the trip. They did not travel on Sunday, so
they averaged about twenty miles a day, arriving in Dallas Co. October 17.
Among the families represented in the group were the PULLENS, BROWNS,
MARTINS, OSBORNES, WHITES, WILSONS, ISAACS, ALLENS, PORTERS and MILLIGANS.
"They had many interesting experiences en route to Texas. They crossed the
Tennessee River at Clifton, and intended crossing the Mississippi at Memphis.
When they arrived there, guards turned them back as Memphis was quarantined
on account of yellow fever. They went north by Reel Foot Lake in West
Tennessee and crossed the Mississippi at New Madrid in Missouri. They were
forced to go through Nigger Wool Swamps where they drove over a post road for
sixteen miles. A man had to walk at the head of each mule or horse to keep
them from slipping on the logs. Mrs. Brown remembers the swarms of yellow
jackets they went through. After passing through this swamp they camped
where the turkeys, wild ducks and fish were plentiful.
"Mrs. Brown fell in love with Texas prairies and wanted to stop before they
reached Dallas Co.. However, they settled on the Caruth farm on Air Line Road,
and lived in this White Rock neighborhood for ten years. Watt CARUTH made
the ten-mile trip to Dallas by horseback daily for the mail and delivered it to
the settlers. The first year they made a marvelous crop. It was while they
were living there that their son, Carl, was born in 1883.
"In 1883 they bought a farm from W. T. OLINGER. Among their neighbors for
the next thirteen years were the RIDDLES, COLDWELLS, OLINGERS,
PHILLIPS. MEANS, SPARKS, AKERS, BRYANTS, GREERS, NEELYS and
MYERS. In 1901 they bought the old COOMER house and Mrs. Brown has
since made here home here. Mr. BROWN died January 16, 1917.
"Mrs. BROWN'S sisters are: Mrs. Belle FILGO, Temple, Texas; Mrs. Mag
HICKMAN, Temple, Okla.; Mrs. Mary SPIVEY, Murray Co., Tenn.; Mrs. Izora
SPIVEY, Lynnville, Tenn; and one brother John MARTIN lives in Lewisburg,
Tenn. Besides her son and daughter, she has six grandchildren and four great-
grandchildren.
"To know "Grandma BROWN" is to love her, and the writer knows of no one
who has a wider circle of devoted friends. s / Mrs.
W. H. BRADFIELD."
(COMMENTS OF COMPILER: Ira MARTIN may also have had a mill as a
Crockett Mill was on this land Ira MARTIN bought and could have still beem
working.)

working the deeds there should reveal the kind of property and should be in

From newspaper "Daily Cosmopolitan", Brownsville, TX - Column titled
"Daily News."
"A fellow named Sam BROWN who wanted to marry Gussie, Daughter of M. USSERY
and who was unfavorably looked on by the old man, on the 7th went to his
sweetheart's house and in cold blood shot and killed her father." Published
in "TIPS OF TEXAS" genealogical quarterly of Harlingen, TX, Vol. 3, No. 3,
Nov. 1965, p 25."
A descendant said the story was that Sam BROWN had asked for the hand of
Gussie and was refused because she was too young, She was 18 at the time.
He came back to the USSERY home a 2nd time and again refused by Mastin to
allow her to marry BROWN, whereupon he killed Mastin on his front porch.
They buried Mastin in the front yard of the home, which became the USSERY
Cem. The graves of Mastin and Sarah Jane are the above-ground type about
2 to 3 feet high and filled in with asphalt when I saw it. Several USSERY
family members are buried there.
Mr. Abner USSERY also said sons and sons-in-laws formed a posse and caught
the Sam BROWN. That was the last hanging in Caldwell Co., TX.
I learned this information from a record I have lost. The posse hanged
Sam BROWN in the town of Luling and then dragged his body behind a horse
through the town. Charges were brought against the posse members. Some
of them went to California until the charges were dropped. The descendant
said it was the last hanging in the county. The charges were dropped in
the court
records.
