I am developing a regimental history of my ggrandfather's, James Madison Martin, regiment, the 43rd Tennessee Infantry, CSA, intend to publish which will include a compl
ete roster, by individual companies, including as much pertinent biographical information possible on each of the soldiers. He had three brothers in Co. K including Issac Martin who died at Vicksburg. I have the national archives microfilm rolls of the r
egiments service records, Official Records of the War,
Tennesseans in the Civil War, and most of the basic reference works . Since most official confederate army records did not survive, I am looking for letters, diaries, momentos, photos, papers, histories, etc., Any help you can provide would be greatly ap
preciated. A memorial ceremony will be conducted on Confederate Memorial Day, April 26, 1998 (I believe) at the Vicksburg, Miss. City Cemetery dedicating newly placed tomb stones for Confederate soldiers, including 31 of those from the 43rd Tenn.

aperton Mason of Bellefonte, Jackson Co., AL. The 1870 census shows a conflict in her surname and might it be THOMPSON. There is no information as to when and how AnnaEliza came to Dr. Mason's home. Oct 1870 she married John Webster BAKER of Jackson Co.,
AL. She never spoke of her family. Perhaps the names of some of her children hold clues: William Caddy, Walter Jackson, Henry Hastin, Carrie Harrison, Alice Virginia, among other family names. John and "Eliza" moved to TX and John died in Milam Co., TX in

This will hopefully be a breif summary of what we know about William
Robert Lay.
William Robert LAY was born Jan. 11, 1852 in Look out Mtn. or
Hamilton Co., Tennessee. His parents are presumed to be either William,
Silas, or Lewis R. LAY and Elizabeth BROWN or SMITH. Not much is known
about them except that when Wiliam Robert was 5, Elizabeth died, so
this would have been around 1857/58. His father soon remarried and
between 1860 and 1865 passed away himself leaving William Robert to
live with his Step-mother. She then remarried. I do not know either
of the step-parent's names
In about 1865/67 William Robert LAY ran away from home and was
presumed to go to Mississippi where he lived with a black family.
Stories have said that one day he was helping some black men to make
knives and was arrested. On his way to prison he escaped and ran to
Texas where he was to be on the day that the outlaw Sam Bass was
shot and killed in 1878. After this he had to come to Utah where he
married Emily

I am interested in anything you may have on Albert Elvin.
The following is known: Albert served during the Civil War
as a private, Co. H - 10th cavalry. He died on 1/21/1865 and
is buried in the Nashville National Cemetery. Since I am not
from the area I am not sure if this cemetery is located in
Hamilton County or not. Any information will be greatly
appreciated.

Am seeking info- have almost none with which to start on a William H.(I think) White
. He was probably born in Meigs County around 1860-1870. He is my grandfather, about whom I know almost nothing. He had two brothers I know of, and may have had other siblings. These brothers were John and George, who lived in Hamilton County in the 1940's. I think John was about the same age as my grandfather and I think George was younger. My gfather died about 1940 and was living out in Oregon at the time of his death. I think he was in the 42nd Division, US Army in first World War.
Would appreciate any info on the Whites.
I have lots of info on the Fords sho are descended from James Monroe and Mordecai Ford, who migrated from the Tri-cities area of East Tennessee prior to Civil War.
Thank you. D.R. Mahan

Searching for information on Joseph Hicks FAULKNER b. October 12, 1849
m. Eller THOMPSON about 1878 in Pike County Arkansas. 1900 Ark
census has his birthplace as Ga. However, verbal tradition is he
migrated to Ark. from Chattanooga. Supposedly he had two sisters
believed to have worked in textile mills. Did Chattanooga have
textile mills about 1870 - 1880?

I am searching for all information on James Emmett BRADY who married Lucy REDMAN who bore the following children in Chattanooga: James Emmett BRADY Jr. Born 1842; Francis Eugene BRADY. Born 22 August 1844; Mary Jane BRADY. Born19 June 1846. James Emmett
Brady, Sr. volunteered (apparently) for the 3d Artillery and went to fight in the Mexican War -- he died on 7-7-1848 returning from the war. Family folklore indicates that he arrived from Ireland via New York and may have served as a riverboat captain in
Tennessee; apparently he was a Catholic who converted to protestantism in order to marry Lucy REDMAN. Lucy Redman then remarried John Campbell LATHAM and the whole family moved to Missouri. Lucy REDMAN was born 13 Jan 1821, Wolf River, near Memphis, T
N and died 8 Oct 1871 in McDonald Co., MO.
I am looking for the parents of Cornelius WHEELER (born 1878,
Chattanooga, TN), his parents migrated from Georgia. I have visited
the library in Chattanooga and was not able to find any information.
My father Lispenard WHEELER was born in Jacksonville, Fl in 1920 and
the family later moved to Chicago. I am, also searching for extended
family members. The 1900 census show to be a mulatto.

Family lore connects this Daniel BECK to a DAVID and Sarah HUNTER
BECK; early (and apparently rather prosperous) settlers of Hamilton
County, TN. I've never found any "hard evidence" to support that
story. There are a couple of different versions of the story but
they all agree that David is buried on the present Chattanooga Golf
and Country Club. Would love to discover that (at least once upon a
time) there was somebody "important" in our family; so if anyone
knows anything about any of these folks, would love to hear from you.

it was of the Eastern Cherokees. Thanks
